CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Student’s mental health is one of the most crucial topics that society needs to focus on

due to its effects on student’s academic performance and behavior. According to Bracky and

Karabenick (1995) students with high levels of psychological distress are less academically

successful: they have more test anxiety, lower academic self-efficacy, and less effective time

management and use resources. According to mental health research conducted by the National

Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), one in four students has a diagnosable mental illness. Stress

from exams, pressure from family, pressure to do well at school. In this notion, previews studies

have revealed that student’s mental health does affect their academic performances and behavior.

Most students are constantly pressured by their parents to build a bright future and

succeed in life. Parents frequently generalize the concept of greatness and success depending on

how others perform. Apart from academics, children face increased demands in a variety of areas

where they have personal interests, such as music, sports, and arts. As a result, without regard for

the student’s overall development, parents continue to push the boundaries. Too high academic

pressure will negatively affect academic performance, volition Control (Pan et al., 2016) and

sleep quality (Dou et al., 2019). The enormous pressure on students not only hinders their growth

and learning but it also may lead to disappointments, stress, and anxiety.

Student’s mental health is very important in order to achieve good academic performance

and behavior. Putting too much pressure on students may lead to unnecessary problems. If the

student is pressured, their behavior and performance may also be affected.

where the researchers of the study came from. The researchers choose 10 grade 11-STEM

students in St. Thomas Learning Center Foundation Inc. that are currently in senior high school.

The researchers choose these respondents because it is near to their location and it is easier for

them to approach.

3
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

In this research study, the researchers want to determine the factors that affect the mental

health of students in terms of parental pressure. Specifically, this study sought to answer the

following questions as follow;

1. What factors influence the children's health when they are under pressure?

2. Did the student’s academic performance get affected due to parental pressure?

3. How did parental pressure affect the interest and activities the student usually enjoyed?

4. Is there significant relationship between the parental pressure and the mental health of

students?

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects

how we think, feel, and act. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and

make choices. Parental Pressure on the other hand is the state where parents drive their children

to do well in many aspects. Sometimes parents force students to exceed in every endeavor

especially in academic field.

Parental Pressure is the drive that parents put on their children to achieve a goal. On one

hand, student’s self-efficacy is the belief of the students that they can do successfully a task

whatever it is. In a crucial manner, students who have experienced this kind of situation have the

chance to excel academically as required of their parents. Students will do their best as their

return of all the hard work and sacrifice of their parents.

Social standing is a big cause of parental pressure. Caring more about how the world

perceives them, can render parents ignorant about the true talents of their children. Parents often

generalize the definition of success and excellence, depending on how others are doing. The

society that we live in has high regard for academic excellence. Those who fail to meet up to the

expectations often face harsh criticism which creates self-doubts about their abilities and

intelligence. With a cut-throat competitive world out there, Students are constantly pushed to the

edge by their parents to build a bright future and succeed in life. However, the enormous

pressure on the students not only hinders their growth and learning but leads to increased stress

and anxiety.

5
The future of a child is the biggest concern to a parent. Since the educational institutes

in our country are always on the lookout for the brightest and best students to maintain their

reputation, parents feel compelled to raise the bar too high for their students to match up to the

standards. Parents nowadays are too concerned about how the world would perceive their

students which in turn results in parental pressure.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

The research methodology comprises the following: Research Design, Research Method,

Conceptual Framework, Research Environment, Research Respondents, and Data Gathering.

RESEARCH DESIGN

This study used case study research design. According to Bromley, D. B. (1986), it is an

in-depth, detailed examination of a particular case (or cases) within a real-world context. The

researchers adapted the case study research design since this study takes a more holistic approach

to qualitative research. They can be descriptive, exploratory, or explanatory, so they are certainly

one of the more versatile qualitative methodologies. In this study, the researchers will collect

information on the factors that affects the parental pressure on students.

RESEARCH METHOD

This study used the survey approach of conducting research. Specifically, it utilized the

purposive sampling or qualitative technique in selecting respondents. The principal purpose of

the researcher was to discover now the grade 11-STEM students of St. Thomas Learning Center

Foundation Inc. cope up with the parental pressure by the use of interviews.

According to Dudovskiy (2010), Purposive sampling is also defined as a sampling

technique in which the researcher chooses members of the population to participate in the study

based on his or her judgement.

RESEARCH ENVIRONMENT

This study was conducted within Danao City area. It is a city in the Cebu Province fifth

district. This 18, 019 hectares city is composed of 42 coastal and mountain barangays and has a

young household population of 136,471. The study was conducted at St. Thomas Learning

Center Foundation Inc. The school is located at Rizal Street Extension, Tuburan Sur, Danao City,

Cebu. The researchers will conduct the survey online, the students will be answering the surveys

on their home provided that they have internet connections.

questionnaire. The survey contained an introductory paragraph that informed the participants of

the study’s aims, the confidentiality of their responses, and the freedom to decline to answer any

question or to withdraw from the study altogether. The informed target population of the study’s

aims and solicited their participation. Next, the survey’s web link was sent to the target

population using the Facebook Messenger.
