The game of handball

Handball is a team sport game, dynamic and spectacular. It is practiced by both boys and
girls, on different age categories.
As a means of physical education, it contributes to the strengthening of our health,
harmonious physical development, to the development of motor and mental qualities.
The handball match takes place between 2 teams of 7 players each, the ball being touched
only by hand.
A match consists of two periods of 30 minutes each and t he objective of the game
is to score as many goals into the opponent's goal.
the goal of the game being to score as many goals in the opponent's goal. The team that
has scored more goals wins the match.
Handball is a relatively young sport, appearing in Europe in the late 19th and early
20th centuries.
In 1892 there existed similar games with the name Hazena" in Czech Republic
and “handbold" in Denmark. The father of modern handball is considered to be the
German physical education teacher Karl Schelenz.
Initially, the game took place between 2 teams of 11 players, on a field with the
same size as the football field.
In 1928, the International Handball Federation was established, which has 11
members, and also was printed the first international regulations.
In 1934 handball became an Olympic sport, and in 1936 handball participated in the
Berlin Olympics. Romania also participated, ranking 5th out of 6 teams.
In our country, handball becomes popular in 1922, in Sibiu taking place the first match
between 2 teams of the German high school.
The first international match takes place in Romania in 1935, the Sibiu team
playing with a student team from Munich.
The Romanian Handball Federation was formed in 1936. The current handball, in 7
players, appears in Scandinavia. In Romania it appears in the 1950s.
It is played on a field with a length of 40 meters and a width of 20 meters. The goals
are 3 meters wide and 2 meters high. It is played mainly indoors, in gyms.
Romania has a rich tradition in the game of handball and remarkable results at
international level.
The men's handball team was four-time world champion in 1961, 1964, 1970 and 1974.
The women's team won the world championship in 1962, 2nd place in 1973 and 2005 and
3rd place in 2015.

Handball, like other sport games, is practiced with pleasure by children, young people
and adults. It develops speed, dexterity, endurance, strength, ability to react quickly and
tactical thinking.
It also develops team spirit, cohesion, competition and fair play. It helps us maintain
good physical and mental health.
Therefore, physical exercises, practiced individually or in sport games, must play an
important role in our way of life and lead to the saying "Mens sana in corpore sano"
