Our Lady of the Rosary

Short Summary of Our Lady of the Rosary

Our Lady of the Rosary, also known as Our Lady of the Holy Rosary, is a title of the
Blessed Virgin Mary.

The Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary, formerly known as Our Lady of Victory and
Feast of the Holy Rosary, is a feast day of the Roman Catholic Church, celebrated
on 7 October, the anniversary of the decisive victory of the combined fleet of the
Holy League of 1571 over the Ottoman navy at the Battle of Lepanto.

The painting is near-contemporary, but it shows an "imaginative interpretation" of the battle. It

appears to be based on a Venetian print by Martin Rota, dated 1572. A comparable painting by
a different artist is preserved in the Museo Correr, Venice. The history of this painting is
unknown, except that it was acquired by the NMM in 1946 from a London dealer, who may
have obtained it from an English country house collection. The prominence of the Negroni
galley may indicate that family as original owners. The otherwise unknown artist has signed it
'HLETTER' (H and L joined) immediately after the inscription identifying Uluch-Ali. In 1960, Cecil
Gould of the National Gallery, London, suggested 'Austro-Flemish school' as a possible
association but no further information has yet been found.

A Brief History of the Rosary
The rosary is an incredibly rich practice of prayer that developed slowly,
evolving over the centuries. The first recorded use of the word “rosary” did not
appear until 1597. But the roots of the rosary are found far earlier.
While it has been largely abandoned by Catholics in the West, the rosary is
one of the most powerful prayers you may ever pray.
Early Origins of the Rosary
The rosary has roots in several early Christian prayer traditions. They share
similar formats to the rosary with repetitive structures and prayers.
Third-century Christian hermits and monks in Egypt (known as Desert Fathers)
used stones and later prayer ropes to keep track when praying the 150 Psalms.
Various forms of “the Jesus Prayer” (such as “Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God,
have mercy on me.”) became popular. The short prayer was said over and over
again in a type of mantra while counting beads.
The Our Father was also prayed 150 times, using a string of beads with five
decades referred to as a Paternoster (Latin for “Our Father”)
The Hail Mary Prayer
The Hail Mary prayer came together slowly. It took more than a thousand
years. The earliest version simply added Mary’s name to the message
delivered by the angel Gabriel to Mary: “Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is
with thee” (Luke 1:28).
Around 1050 AD, the words Elizabeth used to greet Mary during the Visitation
were added: “Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy
womb” (Luke 1:42). In 1261, Pope Urban IV added the name of Jesus to the
end of Elizabeth’s words.
St. Peter Canisius published the Hail Mary in his 1555 Catechism with almost
the entire final petition: “Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners.”
Eleven years later, the Catechism of the Council of Trent (a work that Canisius
was instrumental in creating) included, for the first time, the entire final
4
petition, concluding with the words “now and at the hour of our death.
Amen.”
The version of the Hail Mary we pray today was given official approval in 1568.
Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee; blessed art thou among
women; and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of
God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.
Why Rosary Beads?
Catholics were not the first to pray with beads. And while the exact origin of
prayer beads is unknown, men and woman of many faiths and cultures
(Hindus, Greeks, Buddhists, and more) have (and do) use beads to pray. In fact,
the word bead in English is actually derived from an Old English word that
means prayer.
The use of prayer beads almost universally is to allow the person to keep
track of the number of prayers that have been said, while at the same time
focusing on the deeper meaning of the prayers themselves.
While praying with beads certainly wasn’t an original idea, it’s a powerful
reminder that everything before the coming of Jesus was preparing for that
moment and that God yearns to transform everything into something holy,
even something as ordinary as a small rope with some beads on it.
How Many Beads Are on a Set of Rosary Beads?
Today, Roman Catholics use a rosary made up
of 59 beads. The 6 large beads are used for
praying the Our Father prayer, and the 53
smaller beads are used for praying the Hail
Mary prayer. Other prayers of the rosary
include the Apostles’ Creed, the Glory Be, and
the Hail, Holy Queen.
There are 5 decades, or groups of 10 small beads, that make up the main
portion of the rosary.

5
The Story of St. Dominic
It is widely believed that in 1214 St. Dominic had a vision of Mary. She is said
to have presented him with the rosary, both the beads and the prayers to be
prayed.
Dominic had a tremendous devotion to Mary and the rosary, which he
promoted wherever he traveled to preach. He encouraged Catholics to gather
in small groups to pray together what was an early form of the rosary
together. These were quite possibly the first expressions of the prayer groups
and small group communities that are still having a powerful impact today.
The Story of St. Louis de Montfort
St. Louis de Montfort was ordained a priest in 1700. He was known not only as
a preacher, but especially for his devotion to Mary and his practice praying the
rosary. Through this devotion he wrote often on the idea of being consecrated
to Jesus through Mary, recognizing that a powerful way to connect with God is
through His mother. His writings make up some of the earliest works on
Mariology, or the study of the theology of Mary.
The Growth of the Rosary
The earliest form of the rosary developed when Pope Gregory the Great (590-
604) popularized an earlier version of the Hail Mary prayer by asking it to be
prayed on the fourth Sunday of Advent. Many individuals began praying the
Hail Mary in a repetitive fashion using a string of beads to keep track of the
prayers.
After the full development of the Hail Mary prayer, the term “rosary” was
finally given in 1597. For 320 years, from 1597 until 1917, the form of both the
Hail Mary and the rosary remained the same.
During those 320 years, there was much written and spoken about the rosary.
Most notably, Pope Paul VI said when we pray the rosary, we can experience
the key moments of the Gospel. It is a simple, beautiful, and focused
meditation, especially when focusing on the mysteries of the rosary.

6
The Fatima Prayer
On May 13, 1917, Mary appeared to three shepherd children in Fatima,
Portugal. She told them to come back to that exact place on the 13th day of
each month for the next six months. Mary promised she would appear to them
each time and entrust a message to them.
Mary told the children to pray for world peace by reciting the rosary every day.
On July 13, 1917, Mary asked the children to add a short prayer to the end of
each decade of the rosary:
O my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell; lead all souls to
heaven, especially those in most need of thy mercy.
Today this is referred to as the Fatima prayer, and many Catholics incorporate
it into the rosary as Mary requested.
The Mysteries of the Rosary
The mysteries of the rosary were introduced by Dominic of Prussia sometime
between 1410 and 1439. This gave each decade of the rosary a unique quality.
Each mystery leads us to ponder very specific events in the lives of Jesus and
Mary and the lessons they hold for our own lives today.
There were originally three sets of mysteries: the Joyful Mysteries, the
Sorrowful Mysteries, and the Glorious Mysteries.
On October 16, 2002, almost 600 years after the original Mysteries of the
rosary were established, Pope John Paul II proposed adding a new set of
mysteries called the Luminous Mysteries (the Mysteries of Light).
The rosary is ever new because the situations and mysteries we are
pondering have an unlimited number of dimensions to consider.
The Rosary and You
The rosary is an incredibly rewarding spiritual practice for the men and women
of any age, and all ages. It is like an ancient treasure map that has led
countless men and women from all walks of life to the treasures of peace, joy,
clarity, and contentment. But don’t take our word for it. Try it for yourself.

Rosary Prayer Format
Throughout the past century in particular, the prayer of the Holy Rosary has
seen many different formats which introduce additional prayers to enhance
the devotion to suit specific needs, petitions to the Lord, and recollection. This
Holy Rosary is presented using a prayer arrangement closely tied to the
current format used during the Marian Devotional Movement’s Canada 54-day
Novena.

The Dominican Order
For 800 years the mission of the Order of Preachers has been to proclaim the
Gospel to every corner of the world. We do this for one simple reason: that
every soul may come to know and love Jesus Christ.
It was for this reason that St. Dominic de Guzman founded the Order of
Preachers in 1216. Traveling through Spain and southern France with the
Bishop of Osma, he encountered many confused people who believed that the
physical world was evil, and created by an evil god. Dominic saw the need for
good preachers who could explain the truth of the Catholic faith and reconcile
those who had fallen away.
As members of the Order of Preachers, we are called to follow in Dominic’s
footsteps, imitating his mercy and preaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ in and
out of season. Our life in common, along with our time in study and at prayer,
allows us to share the fruits of our contemplation and proclaim the good news
to every land and nation.
The Dominicans have given the Church some of her greatest saints, including:
St. Thomas Aquinas, St. Catherine of Siena, and St. Martin de Porres. We have
spread devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary through the gift of the Most Holy
Rosary, promoted the Holy Name Society and the Angelic Warfare
Confraternity since their earliest days, and have exclusively served as
Theologian to the Papal Household.

St. Louis-Marie Grignion de Montfort

Louis-Marie Grignion de Montfort (31 January 1673 – 28 April 1716) was a
French Roman Catholic priest and confessor. He was known in his time as a
preacher and was made a missionary apostolic by Pope Clement XI.
As well as preaching, Montfort found time to write a number of books which
went on to become classic Catholic titles and influenced several popes.

11
Montfort is known for his particular devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary and
the practice of praying the Rosary.
Montfort is considered one of the early writers in the field of Mariology. His
most notable works regarding Marian devotions are contained in Secret of the
Rosary and True Devotion to Mary.
The Roman Catholic Church, under the pontificate of Pope Pius XII, canonized
Montfort on 20 July 1947. A "founders’ statue" created by Giacomo Parisini is
located in an upper niche of the south nave of St. Peter's Basilica.

Total Consecration to Jesus Through Mary

Step 1: Read “True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary”
First, read “True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin,” written by St. Louis de
Montfort himself and decide for certain whether to consecrate yourself to
Jesus through Mary. Read carefully, and don’t take this lightly; consecrating
oneself has the character of a vow.
Step 2: Choose a day for the Consecration
Now choose the date of a Marian Feast on which to make the consecration.
Whichever Feast you choose will determine the date to begin a 33-day period
of spiritual preparation, i.e., you follow spiritual exercises for 33 days, and the
next day will be the Marian Feast on which you consecrate yourself.
Step 3: Begin the 33-Day Preparation for Consecration
Now begins the 33-day period of exercises. St. Louis-Marie breaks these days
into sections of days, each section having its own prayers, and each particular
day having its own brief readings with which to fill the mind for that day (the
readings come from Sacred Scripture, “The Imitation of Christ,” and “True
Devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary”). Don’t just read the readings, internalize
them; don’t let your lips just mouth the prayers, truly pray them.

12
First comes a 12-day preparation period that consists of emptying oneself of
the spirit of the world in penance and mortification. For those 12 days, we
pray the Veni Creator, the Ave Maris Stella, the Magnificat, and the Glory Be.
Then follow 3 weeks, each week having a specific focus.
The first week focuses on offering up our prayers and devotions for the
purpose of coming to understand ourselves and our sins; humility is the key,
and the prayers the Litany of the Holy Ghost, the Litany of Loreto, and the Ave
Maris Stella help us.
During the second week, we ask the Holy Ghost to help us better understand
the Blessed Virgin; we pray the Litany of the Holy Ghost, the Litany of Loreto,
the Ave Maris Stellis, the prayer to Mary by St. Louis-Marie, and 5 decades of
the Holy Rosary each day for assistance.
During the third week, we seek to better understand Christ through
meditation and the Litany of the Holy Ghost, the Ave Maris Stella, and the
Litany of the Holy Name of Jesus, Montfort’s prayer to Jesus, and the prayer O
Jesus Living in Mary.

Prayer of the Holy Rosary According to the Method of

St Louis de Montfort
St. Louis de Montfort includes introductory prayers at the beginning of the
Rosary, as well as the beginning of each decade, to inspire deeper
contemplation of the graces of each mystery. He finishes each decade with a
final prayer asking for these graces to come down into our souls.
~These were excerpted from True Devotion to Mary, TAN Books & Publishers,
1985, and altered slightly to draw focus to St. Michael the Archangel, the
deliverer of graces as recounted by venerable Philomena.

13
Why the Luminous Mysteries of the Holy Rosary Are
Not Included?
There is nothing inherently wrong with meditating on the life of Christ with the
Luminous Mysteries. The top reason why the Luminous Mysteries are not
included in this Holy Rosary presentation is to keep it congruent with the
decades of the Holy Rosary format used during this anniversary of 450 years
ago that we celebrate.

Why the Flame of Love Movement?

(a means to blind satan during these times)

In Brief
Its origin: In the revelations of the Lord Jesus Christ and the Virgin
Mary to Elizabeth Kindelmann, a Hungarian mother of
six, between the years 1961 and 1982.
Status of Approval: On June 6, 2009, his Eminence Cardinal Peter Erdö,
Archbishop of Esztergom-Budapest and President of the
Council of Episcopal Conferences of Europe granted his
Imprimatur number 494-4/2009 to the Hungarian
original Spiritual Diary of Elizabeth Kindelmann,
authorizing the publication of the messages given to her
by the Lord Jesus and the Blessed Virgin Mary.
Currently, the movement is seeking further approbation
as a Public Association of the Faithful. On June 19, 2013,
Pope Francis gave it his Apostolic Blessing.

14
WHAT IS THE FLAME OF LOVE?
The devotion to the Flame of Love of the Immaculate
Heart of Mary finds its origin in the revelations of the
Lord Jesus Christ and the Virgin Mary to Elizabeth
Kindelmann, a Hungarian mother of six, between the
years 1961 and 1982. Elizabeth died on April 11,
1985. Through her, the Virgin Mary placed into our
hands a new means: the Flame of Love of Her
Immaculate Heart.
These revelations have been transcribed by Elizabeth in her Spiritual Diary
which, together with the Holy Gospels and the Teaching of the Church, is at
the root of the spirituality of the Flame of Love Movement.
On June 6, 2009, his Eminence Cardinal Peter Erdö, Archbishop of Esztergom-
Budapest and President of the Council of Episcopal Conferences of Europe
granted his Imprimatur number 494-4/2009 to the Hungarian original Spiritual
Diary of Elizabeth Kindelmann, authorizing the publication of the messages
given to her by the Lord Jesus and the Blessed Virgin Mary.
The Flame of Love and its mystery
The Virgin Mary wants the devotion to the Flame of Love of Her Immaculate
Heart to spread throughout the world so that the greatest number of Her
children may respond to Her urgent plea. Through the Flame of Love, we are
all invited to take part in the Work of Salvation by blinding Satan, the source of
all evil, and thus help the Lord Jesus Christ and the Virgin Mary to save souls.
This is what the Flame of Love wants to accomplish.
The Virgin Mary: “This Flame of Graces coming from My Immaculate Heart
must go from heart to heart. It will be the Great Miracle whose Light will blind
Satan. It is the Fire of Love and of the Union. We shall fight fire with fire: the
fire of hate with the Fire of Love! I obtained this Grace from the Eternal Father
on your behalf by virtue of the Five Blessed Wounds of My Divine Son.”
The Lord Jesus: “I could compare this torrential flood to the first Pentecost. It
will submerge the earth by the power of the Holy Spirit. All mankind will take
heed at the time of this great miracle. Here comes the torrential flow of the
15
Flame of Love of My Most Holy Mother. The world, darkened already by the
lack of faith, will undergo formidable tremors and then people will believe!
These jolts will give rise to a new world by the power of faith. Trust, confirmed
by faith, will take root in souls and the face of the earth will thus be renewed.
For never has such a flow of grace ever been given since the Word became
Flesh.
This renewing of the earth, tested by suffering, will take place through the
power and the imploring force of the Blessed Virgin!”
The means
We are given several means to put in effect the power of the Flame of Love:
- Our Blessed Mother is asking us to add the following supplication to the “Hail
Mary” in the usual Rosary and to make it known to the whole world:
“From now on, any time you pray to Me, add the following request:
Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with Thee, blessed are Thou among women,
and blessed is the fruit of Thy womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, spread the effect of grace of
Thy Flame of Love over all of humanity, now and at the hour of our death.
Amen.
With this prayer, you will blind Satan.”
The bishop asked Elizabeth: "Why should we recite the very old Ave Maria
differently?" On February 2, 1982, the Lord answered: "It is exclusively thanks
to the effective petitions of the Blessed Virgin that the Most Holy Trinity
granted the overflowing of the Flame of Love. By it, ask in the prayer with
which you greet My Most Holy Mother: "spread the effect of grace of Thy
Flame of Love over all of humanity, now and at the hour of our death.
Amen." So that, by its action, humanity is converted."
The Most Blessed Virgin added: "I do not want to change the prayer by which
you honour me; by this petition, I want rather to shake humanity. This is not a
new prayer formula; it must be a constant petition." (Spiritual Diary, October
1962)
16
- By praying the prayer Christ taught Elizabeth, and He invited her to propagate
it since He considers it to be a powerful means to blind Satan.
- When we take part in the Holy Sacrifice of Mass, if we are in a state of grace,
the Evil one is blinded and the plenitude of the graces is transmitted to the
soul for which we offer the Holy Mass. The Blessed Virgin: "If you attend a Holy
Mass which is not an obligation for you, and if you are in a state of grace
before God, I will spread the Flame of Love of my Heart and I will blind Satan
during this time. My graces will run out abundantly on the souls for which you
offer this Holy Mass. The participation in the Sacrifice of the Holy Mass
increases to the highest degree the blindness of Satan." (November 22, 1962)
- In the accomplishment of our duties, by offering to the Lord our daily work, if
we are in a state of grace, this offering will increase the blindness of Satan.
"Throughout the day also, offer your labour for the glory of God! This offering,
made in a state of grace, also helps to blind Satan. Live in conformity with my
graces so that the blindness of Satan extends more and more and grows
increasingly larger. If you make good use of the abundant graces that I bestow
upon you, they will make better a multitude of souls." (November 30, 1962)
- "My little one, you must consider Thursdays and Fridays as two great days of
special grace. These days, those who offer atonement to my divine Son will
receive a great grace. During the hours of atonement, the ability of Satan
weakens insofar as the atoning souls beg for the sinners..." (September 29,
1962). “On Thursdays and Fridays offer a special offering in atonement to my
Holy Son. This should be done in the family starting with a spiritual reading
followed by the Rosary or other prayers in intense fervor. Try to gather two or
three members as you recall where two or more are gathered to pray, my Son
is present among them.”
- "When someone does Adoration in a spirit of atonement or pays a visit to
the Blessed Sacrament, as long as it lasts, Satan loses his power on the parish
souls. Blinded, he ceases to reign on souls." (November 6 – 7, 1962)
The Flame of Love and the dying
The Blessed Virgin: "You see, My daughter, when the Flame of Love of My
Heart is inflamed upon the earth, its outpouring of graces flows out to the

17
dying as well. Satan is blinded and with the help of your fervent prayers,
Satan’s fight against the dying will cease. Under the serene beam of My Flame
of Love, even the most hardened sinners are converted for I do not want any
soul to be lost… Make sure that not a single minute goes by during the night
without prayer. As long as there is someone awake and praying in honour of
My Flame of Love, I promise you that not a single dying person in their
surroundings will be damned.
The more fervently you pray, the more thoroughly will Satan be blinded, and
the dying soul will find renewed strength to decide wisely as to her future
destiny."
The Flame of Love and the souls in Purgatory
The Lord Jesus: “Whoever fasts on Monday on bread and water while referring
to the Flame of Love of the Immaculate Heart of Mary delivers the soul of a
priest from Purgatory. Also, he who follows that prescription will receive the
grace, during the octave following his death, to be delivered from Purgatory by
My Mother.” (Agenda of Monday)
The Blessed Virgin added: “For all those who observe absolute fasting regularly
on Monday, they can cease it at 6.00 p.m. But instead, they must pray on the
same day a five-decade Rosary for the souls in Purgatory.”
The Blessed Virgin Mary: "The priests who observe the fasting on Monday
release during each Holy Mass they celebrate during that week, at the
moment of consecration, innumerable souls from Purgatory. The religious and
the laity who observe absolute fasting on Monday, will deliver during that
week, every time they receive Communion and at the time they receive the
Sacred Body of the Lord, a host of souls from Purgatory." (August 15, 1980)
“Your compassion for poor souls has moved my maternal Heart so much that I
am granting you the grace you requested. Whenever my Flame of Love is
invoked and three Hail Mary’s are recited in my honor, a soul is released from
Purgatory. During November, the month of the deceased, ten souls will be
released from Purgatory for each Hail Mary recited. Suffering souls must also
feel the effect of the grace from the Flame of Love of my maternal Heart.”
(October 13, 1962)

18
The pain of the memory of our sins fertilizes also the souls (August 15, 1964).
Even the desire of the salvation of souls contributes to blind Satan (November
30, 1962), because the will of the soul is already love (September 15, 1962).
"I need you all"
The Virgin Mary: "You must strive to participate in the blinding of Satan! I need
you, individually as well as collectively. Any delay must be ruled out, for Satan
will be blinded to the extent of your participation…
This is a grave responsibility. But your effort will not be in vain. If the whole
world is united to Me, the soft light of My Flame of Love will then burn and set
the globe aflame. Satan will be humiliated and made incapable of using his
power any longer, provided this time of preparation is not indefinitely
prolonged! No, do not prolong it! Do not procrastinate in response to My holy
requests!"
"My daughter, I am providing you with so powerful a grace: the burning Flame
of Love from My Heart, that has never before been offered as it is now. Ever
since the Word became Flesh, I have not undertaken a greater movement than
the Flame of Love from My Heart who rushes to you. Till now, nothing could
blind Satan as much. And it is up to you not to reject it, for this rejection would
simply spell disaster."
The Lord Jesus: “Go beyond your limits! Think of the Three Wise Men who
made a superhuman sacrifice. They surely exceeded their usual limits. Above
all, the priests must do it, but the other consecrated persons as well and all the
faithful..."
The Virgin Mary: “In the tribulation that is about to begin, I will remain with
you. I am your Mother. I can and will help you. Soon, you will see My Flame of
Love gushing forth everywhere, illuminating the heavens, the earth, and even
darkened and slumbering souls. But what sorrow it is for Me to have to watch
so many of My children throw themselves into Hell!”
The Virgin Mary: “My children, the arm of My Divine Son is ready to strike. I
can barely hold it back. Help Me! If you invoke My Flame of Love, we can save
the world together!”

19
What the Flame of Love is
Elizabeth once asked: “What then is the Flame of Love?”
Jesus responded: “My Mother’s Flame of Love is for you what the Noah’s Arch
was for Noah.” And the Blessed Virgin Mary added: “The Flame of Love of My
Immaculate Heart is Jesus Christ Himself!”
Let us thank the Lord for the Flame of Love from the bottom of our hearts and
with great gratitude for a gift of an exceptional import, for never has such a
flow of graces ever been given since the Word became flesh, as the Virgin
Mary once said to Elizabeth.

The Marian Devotional Movement

www.visitationproject.org
On November 27th, 2017, the Feast of the Miraculous Medal,
Fr. (now Bishop) Pierre-Olivier Tremblay, OMI, the Rector at
Canada's National Marian Shrine, and his pastoral council agree
to entrust the Marian Devotional Movement as Registrar for the
Confraternity of the Most Holy Rosary originally established at
the Cape in 1694. This historic decision forges the foundation
for the ongoing efforts of Marian Devotional Movement, namely the
enrolment of souls in the Rosary Confraternity. In addition, the MDM
promotes pilgrimages to the Confraternity altar at the Shrine of Our Lady of
the Cape.
Since that time, the Marian Devotional Movement has faithfully continued the
work of promoting the Confraternity of the Most Holy Rosary through various
initiatives and events. Building on the 2017 MDM momentum, the DnA Live
Show began streaming in January 2018. On August 22nd, 2019, in the midst of
the Cape - Capital 5 Day Pilgrimage, the MDM hosted Canada's First Rosary
Bowl. Additional initiatives included the Divine Invitation 2019 featuring the
release of the Heart to Heart booklet; the release of the Our Lady of the Cape -

20
Her Story, Your Story double CD audio book; and the republishing of the
devotional book, the Woman in Orbit featuring daily Marian stories. In 2020,
Through the MDM's Canada54 National Novena, Mary's title for our times -
Queen of Intercessors was birthed on June 22nd. This Marian milestone is
preparing the way for growing her Intercessor Family throughout the world.
During the pandemic the MDM has established virtual Intercessor Experiences
as the Bridge of Rosaries continues to grow across the globe.
The work of the Marian Devotional Movement is ordered towards the
conversion and salvation of souls. The Catechism of the Catholic Church
describes the conversion of one’s heart as follows:
1432 The human heart is heavy and hardened. God must give man a new
heart. Conversion is first of all a work of the grace of God who makes our
hearts return to him: "Restore us to thyself, O LORD, that we may be
restored!" God gives us the strength to begin anew. It is in discovering the
greatness of God's love that our heart is shaken by the horror and weight of
sin and begins to fear offending God by sin and being separated from him. The
human heart is converted by looking upon him whom our sins have pierced:
Let us fix our eyes on Christ's blood and understand how precious it is to his
Father, for, poured out for our salvation it has brought to the whole world the
grace of repentance.
1431 Interior repentance is a radical reorientation of our whole life, a return, a
conversion to God with all our heart, an end of sin, a turning away from evil,
with repugnance toward the evil actions we have committed. At the same time
it entails the desire and resolution to change one's life, with hope in God's
mercy and trust in the help of his grace. This conversion of heart is
accompanied by a salutary pain and sadness which the Fathers called animi
cruciatus (affliction of spirit) and compunctio cordis (repentance of heart).

The renewal of the universal prayer of the Archconfraternity of the Rosary is

an efficacious and powerful means of conversion.

The Queenship of Mary Community

Ottawa, Ontario.

The Queenship of Mary Community has been a very big part of the Marian
Devotional Movement over the years and recently have accepted the
growing responsibility of packing and shipping the many wonderful gifts and
sacramentals available through the MDM.
The Queenship of Mary Community has graciously contributed the time and
beautiful voices of the Ave Maria recording!

22
THE HISTORY
Adapted from an article written by Deborah Gyapong of Canadian
Catholic News, published in the Catholic Register in 2013

QUEENSHIP OF MARY COMMUNITY 2020/2021

When Alice Fougère had a personal encounter with Jesus Christ in 1998, she
had no idea God's plans included her founding a new religious order.
"I was living a very ordinary life and all of a sudden I truly experienced the
Lord," she said.
Now in consecrated life with the religious name, Mother Mary Bernadette, she
is the visionary leader of the Queenship of Mary Community, a new
congregation in the Archdiocese of Ottawa-Cornwall.
A lifelong Catholic, Mother Mary Bernadette recalls a childhood devotion to
the Blessed Virgin Mary that she shared with her mother. A regular Mass
attender, she said she lacked a personal relationship with Jesus. Consequently,
"my faith would be on and off."
Trained in the business world, she was on a work-related trip to Montreal in
1998 when she slipped into the city's majestic Mary Queen of the World
Cathedral where her encounter with God took place. In a profound experience
of prayer, she "realized the Lord was very much alive and supposed to be the

23
centre of my life," she said. She began attending Mass an extra day a week and
reading spiritual writings.
INTENSE JOURNEY
Reading St. Thérèse of Lisieux's 'The Story of a Soul' launched her on "an
intense spiritual journey." This journey led to much self-examination and a
deepening prayer life. She also came across St. Teresa of Avila's writings.
These two Carmelite saints set the framework of the spirituality that would
eventually inspire the Queenship of Mary Community, she said. St. Teresa of
Avila is one of the new congregation's patron saints, along with good St.
Joseph and St. Michael the Archangel.
Early on in the journey, her "life took a turn" where her circumstances became
"really hard," and she "went through a period of a lot of suffering because of
my faith."
At this low point, she decided to follow St. Louis de Montfort's program of
prayer for a 33-day consecration to the Blessed Mother. In fact, she did the
consecration three years in a row and each time she was able to conclude the
journey at a Marian pilgrimage site in Europe.
At the time, she was working in the business department at Dalhousie
University, creating and managing a Career and Alumni Centre to help
Bachelor of Commerce and MBA graduates secure employment and
successfully transition into the work world.
QUEENSHIP HOUSE
In 2003, she sensed God calling her to open a house in Halifax for young
women, who were discerning a call on their life whether to marriage, religious
life or consecrated single life. Queenship House attracted two young women
the first year. She moved to a better location the second year and attracted
four or five. The third year, they moved to a still larger house where the
number of young women grew to eight.
At Fatima in 2005, while deep in prayer, Mother Mary Bernadette had the
words "they are now to be consecrated" impressed upon her.

24
She chose Ottawa for her new community location. She visited Ottawa's
Archbishop Marcel Gervais to tell him about how her Catholic women's house
was developing into a religious community and asked permission to set it up in
his diocese. He said yes.
Ottawa attracted her because of the Companions of the Cross, a community of
priests founded by Father Bob Bedard, she said. "A lot was happening there
spiritually," she said of the nation's capital.
A Companion's priest, Father Ben St. Croix, has been instrumental in
supporting her vision for the new religious order.
Mother Mary Bernadette at first thought the new order would work closely
with the Companions of the Cross, however, it was discovered that the
community would be focusing on establishing as a religious institute as
opposed to an apostolic society.
In 2007, Gervais retired, and the pope named her Halifax archbishop, Terrence
Prendergast, SJ, as his replacement. She saw this as Providential since
Prendergast had been shepherding the Queenship House from its onset in
Halifax.
PLANNING BEGINS
She arrived in Ottawa in the summer of 2007, and within the first year began
to work with a canon lawyer to create the constitution for the new order. In
2011, to meet the requirements of canon law, Prendergast asked them to find
a well-established religious institute to take them into their novitiate program.
The Franciscan Missionaries of Mary welcomed them.
On March 26, 2012, the date of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary
that year, at Notre Dame Cathedral in Ottawa Prendergast blessed their habits
and accepted their first vows and religious names. He recognized them as a
'private association of Christ’s faithful'. Soon after, they bought a former
Anglican rectory in Metcalfe with money from an anonymous donor plus a
bank loan.

25
CONTINUED GROWTH
Five months later, on the feast of the Queenship of Mary, the Archbishop led a
Eucharistic Procession through the streets in Metcalfe to the convent where
Jesus was reposed in their new chapel, she said.
About 200 people accompanied the procession with lit candles and knelt on
the lawn as Prendergast performed the Benediction with the Blessed
Sacrament before going inside to the chapel.
On the Solemnity of the Annunciation in 2015, the first group of founding
sisters made their perpetual profession of vows. Since this time, the
community has welcomed several young women to discern a religious
vocation.
In 2016, the community acquired nearly 170 acres of land on the outskirts of
Ottawa in Plantagenet, Ontario, where plans have begun for the construction
of the motherhouse convent.
PERPETUAL ADORATION
Mother Mary Bernadette hopes to establish perpetual adoration, as well as a
fully-enclosed contemplative community within the Queenship of Mary
community at a future date.
"We're prayer warriors," said Mother.

The Backing Music in This Holy Rosary Recording

Introductory: Rorate Caeli (Drop down, ye heavens)
Joyful Mysteries: Signum Magnum (Latin for a great sign)
Sorrowful Mysteries: Orbis Factor Kyrie (Maker of the world, King Eternal)
Glorious Mysteries: O Filii Et Filiae (Ye Sons and Daughters of the King)

Rorate Caeli (Drop down, ye heavens)

"Rorate caeli" or "Rorate coeli" ('Drop down, ye heavens') are the opening
words of Isaiah 45:8 in the Vulgate. The text appears at several points in the
Christian liturgy during Advent.
The text is frequently sung to plainsong at Mass and in the Divine Office
during Advent where it gives expression to the longings of Patriarchs and
Prophets, and symbolically of the Church, for the coming of the Messiah.
Throughout Advent it occurs daily as the versicle and response after the
hymn at Vespers.

27
Signum Magnum (Latin for a great sign)
Signum Magnum (Latin for a great sign) is an apostolic exhortation on
consecration to the Blessed Virgin Mary by Pope Paul VI. It was released on
May 13, 1967 in Saint Peter's Basilica in Rome, on the 50th anniversary of Our
Lady of Fátima, to coincide with the Pope's visit to the Sanctuary of Fátima, in
Cova da Iria, Portugal.
The title refers to Revelation 12:1 "A great sign appeared in the sky, a
woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her
head a crown of twelve stars."
Signum Magnum begins by asserting that honor is accorded to Mary
throughout history, and states, "Mary's spiritual motherhood transcends
the boundaries of time and space. It is part of the Church's history for all
times, because she never ceases to exercise her maternal office or to help
us."
Signum Magnum repeatedly quotes Lumen gentium and extends the
teaching on Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church. Addressed to the Catholic
bishops of the world, Paul exhorts "all the sons of the Church to renew
personally their consecration to the Immaculate Heart of the Mother of
the Church".

Orbis Factor Kyrie (Maker of the world, King Eternal)

This mystical Gregorian melody gives a glimpse of what can be found in the
core of western spirituality. It is sung in the traditional roman-catholic liturgy,
specifically found in the 11th mass music collection, called "orbis factor".
"Kyrie eleison" is greek and translates to "God, have mercy". This is my
personal heartfelt version of the chant. Source: Patrick Lenk YouTube channel

O Filii Et Filiae (Ye Sons and Daughters of the King)

O Filii Et Filiae is a Christian hymn celebrating Easter. It was written by Jean
Tisserand, O.F.M. (d. 1494), a Franciscan Friar.

28
The hymn was very popular in France, whence it has spread to other
countries. The 19th-century volume "The Liturgical Year" entitles it "The
Joyful Canticle" and gives Latin text with English prose translation, with a
triple Alleluia preceding and following the hymn. In certain hymnals,
however, this triple Alleluia is sung also between the stanzas; and in
others, greater particularity is indicated in the distribution of the stanzas
and of the Alleluias, which has a great effect, in the words of John Mason
Neale, "It is scarcely possible for anyone, not acquainted with the melody,
to imagine the jubilant effect of the triumphant Alleluia attached to
apparently less important circumstances of the Resurrection. It seems to
speak of the majesty of that event, the smallest portions of which are
worthy to be so chronicled." The conflict of stress and word-accent led
Neale to speak of the "rude simplicity" of the poem and to ascribe the
hymn to the twelfth century in his volume (although the note prefixed to
his own translation assigns the hymn to the thirteenth century). The
French priest Jacques Paul Migne also declares it to be very ancient. It is
only recently that its true authorship has been discovered, with the
Dictionary of Hymnology (2nd ed., 1907) tracing it back only to the year
1659, with earlier sources finding it in a Roman Processional of the
sixteenth century. The hymn was assigned in the various French
Paroissiens to the Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament, on Easter
Sunday. Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/O_filii_et_fili%C3%A6#History

Concluding Prayers

Hail Holy Queen

Lead Hail, holy Queen, mother of mercy, our life, our sweetness, and our
hope. To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve; to thee do
we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley of tears.
Turn then, most gracious advocate, thine eyes of mercy toward us;
and, after this, our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb,
Jesus. O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary. Pray for us O holy
mother of God,
All that we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Lead Let us pray. O God, whose only-begotten Son by his life, death and
Resurrection, has purchased for us the rewards of eternal life; grant,
we beseech thee, that by meditating upon these mysteries of the
most holy rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary, we may imitate what
they contain and obtain what they promise, through the same Christ
our Lord.
All Amen.

Prayer to St. Joseph

Lead To you, O blessed Joseph, do we come in our tribulation, and having
implored the help of your most holy Spouse, we confidently invoke
your patronage also.
Through that charity which bound you to the Immaculate Virgin
Mother of God and through the paternal love with which you
embraced the Child Jesus, we humbly beg you graciously to regard
the inheritance which Jesus Christ has purchased by his Blood, and
with your power and strength to aid us in our necessities.
O most watchful guardian of the Holy Family, defend the chosen
children of Jesus Christ; O most loving father, ward off from us every
contagion of error and corrupting influence; O our most mighty

42
protector, be kind to us and from heaven assist us in our struggle
with the power of darkness.
As once you rescued the Child Jesus from deadly peril, so now
protect God's Holy Church from the snares of the enemy and from all
adversity; shield, too, each one of us by your constant protection, so
that, supported by your example and your aid, we may be able to live
piously, to die in holiness, and to obtain eternal happiness in heaven.
All Amen.

Prayer to St. Michael the Archangel

Lead St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle, be our protection
against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him
we humbly pray; and do thou, O Prince of the Heavenly host, by the
power of God, cast into hell Satan and all the evil spirits who prowl
about the world seeking the ruin of souls.
All Amen.

Marian Consecration Daily Prayer

Lead Our Lady of the Cape, Queen of the Holy Rosary, Queen of
Intercessors; we offer and give our prayers, sacrifices, good works,
time, talent and treasure to your Immaculate Heart, to do with as you
please, for the greater glory of God.
We thank God the Father, for choosing you to be our heavenly
Mother. We thank God the Son, for giving you to us as He was dying
for our sins and those of the whole world on the cross. We thank God
the Holy Spirit, for the graces He gives us through you.
Help us, by your prayers, to be faithful to the vows of our Baptism.
Help us, by your prayers, to accomplish all that God has planned for
us in advance to do.
All Amen.

All Amen.

Sacred Heart of Jesus

Church, upon its priests, upon all its children; sustain the just,
convert the sinners, assist the dying, deliver the souls in purgatory;
extend over all hearts the sweet empire of your love. Sacred Heart of
Jesus, have mercy on us and on the whole world.
All Amen.
