INTRODUCTION

Good morning to all of you. My name is Mohammad Shafiq and I am here to present my project. I
have done my project on “VECTOR-BORNE DISEASES” I chose this topic because according to an
article published by a leading newspaper the cases of Dengue and Malaria of last year were more
than the cases of Corona at that time in Delhi.

Previous year, over 300 million people had suffered from vector-borne diseases and in 2020 there
were approximately 270 million cases reported.

We think these diseases are decreasing day by day year by year with increasing medical facilities but
the fact remains that these cases are increasing day by day year by year. Hence, we cannot ignore it.

In this project I have specially focused on mosquitoes because India as a tropical country is one of
the best breeding grounds in the world for different types of vectors specially mosquitoes and
hence, we have developed several household methods to tackle the problem of mosquitoes.

METHODOLOGY
Our project is based on survey, we have taken a total survey of 125 families where 60 are from
urban area and 65 are from rural area. I took a survey of urban areas like sambhaji nagar, swami
nagar etc and my friend and the member of this project Sarvesh took the survey of rural areas like
laxmi nagar , saraswati nagar and nehru nagar etc.

We asked questions to the people, and made them to fill survey forms, some are filled by people
themselves and some are filled by us by collecting info from them.

A few questions asked to them were:

Do mosquitoes enter your house? this question is important because if somebody said no then we
cannot continue the conversation.

Next question asked was:

Are you’ll aware that mosquitoes spread diseases like dengue and malaria? we asked this question
because people use methods to avoid mosquitoes but they may not know why they have to avoid
mosquitoes?

Our next question was, which methods do you use to avoid mosquitoes? We asked this question
since we wanted to know which method is most preferably used and does the method have
anything to do with a particular area? We also wanted to categorize the methods used by people
into natural methods and modern methods to avoid mosquitoes.

Our next question was how much do you spend money on these methods? this is also important
because we want know in which area people spend more money to avoid mosquitoes so that we can
compare and analyze the expenditure incurred by different areas to avoid mosquitoes.

Next important question is, In which season do mosquitoes increase in your society? I will talk about
the significance of this question during conclusion of my topic.

Our most important question is - where do you dispose your waste? mostly when we asked this
question during survey many people asked us the reason for asking this question since they believed
that this question is not related to our topic but we explained them that this is the main reason
growth and spread of mosquitoes in a particular area and hence it needs to be dealt with in a proper
and appropriate manner.

Our next question was - anybody in your family, had suffered from vector-borne diseases in the past
or currently suffering from it? We asked this question to get the data and statistics checked which
we had collected from various sources to begin with.

DATA ANALYSIS
IN THE FIRST GRAPH WE CAN SEE THE PERCENTAGE OF PEOPLE WHO HAD SUFFERED FROM VECTOR BORNE
DISEASES IN 2020 AREA-WISE IN MACCHE , BELGUAM

In sambhaji nagar we took survey of about 25 families and we found 20 percent of them had suffered from
vector-borne diseases. In swami nagar we took survey of 30 families and we found approximately 25 % of
families had suffered from Vector-borne diseases.

In rural areas like, laxmi nagar we found that 40% of people had suffered from vector-borne diseases, 45% of
people in nehru nagar and in saraswati nagar we found 80% of families that had suffered from vector-borne
diseases.

IN THE 2ND GRAPH WE CAN SEE THE TYPE OF METHODS USED TO AVOD VECTOR-BORNE DISEAS0ES (AREA-
WISE)

IN URBAN AREAS WE FOUND THAT PEOPLE USE MODERN METHODS LIKE GOOD KNIGHT LIQUID VAPOURISER AND COIL
ETC AND IN RURAL AREAS WE CAN SEE THAT ONLY 30% OF FAMILIES USE MODERN METHODS AND REST USE NATURAL
METHODS LIKE BURNING UPLA, NEEM LEAVES ETC.

BUT THIS IS NOT THE REASON FOR INCREASED NUMBER OF CASES OF VECTOR-BORNE DISEASES IN RUIRAL AREAS.

WE WILL FIND THE REASON FOR THIS IN OUR CONCLUSION.

Our next graph shows that - ?????

We found that the people of urban areas dispose their waste in garbage van (reference photo ????)
which comes daily to their area on the other hand the people of rural areas normally dispose their
waste in gutters (photo ???) or they burn it (photo ???) and we found that most of the time they
dispose waste in open roads /area (photo ????) means in the rural areas open dumping is more
prominent.

CONCLUSION
We found that –

Mosquitoes enter in all homes – be it rural or urban.

People spend 150 to 200 rupees per month for avoiding mosquitoes.

In Rainy season mosquitoes increase because of increase in stagnant water and open gutters just
after 5 min of rain the water stays there for weeks.

In saraswati nagar there were many cases of vector borne diseases because the roads are in very
bad condition due to which temporarily water becomes stagnant, it was also seen that people
dispose their waste in open gutters due to which they get blocked and increase stagnant water
sources.

SUGGESTIONS
These are some suggestions that we want to give which will prove effective for decreasing
vector-borne diseases:
1. Roads should be repaired with mixture of plastic and bitumen to increase their
lifespan. (Reference ?????)
2. Open gutters should be closed and instead underground gutters should be
encouraged. (Reference ???)
3. Garbage van should collect garbage from all areas. (= letter to authorities)
4. Employing local people for checking stagnant water, spraying insecticides to kill
microbes and eggs of mosquitoes.
5. Government should ban coolers. (= cooler – straw, water ???)
6. Government should check the implementation of policies related to such issues and
regularly conduct repair and maintenance of infrastructure related to such policies.
7. Government should levy heavy fine on authorities who fail to implement the
concerned policies under question.

FUTURE SCOPE

OUR AIM IS TO SUPPORT PRIME MINISTER’S SWACCH BHARAT YOJANA

Since our countries progress, development and the way other countries look upon us
depends on success of such policies.
Everybody might have experienced that - NRI’s praise developed countries for their
cleanliness and attribute them being developed nation to their keen sense of cleanliness,
therefore not only to change their opinion about our country but also to change the status
of our country from developing to “developed” we need to work on the suggestions given
above.
I know that financial crisis may exist in implementing such suggestions but health of the
people is more important.
If the suggestions given above are followed meticulously then we can eradicate vector-
borne diseases from its root and even other diseases related to it will be curbed.
We always blame government for our country’s cleanliness but we should ask ourselves
about our contribution in improving cleanliness of our surroundings?
I thank everybody for your patience.
