Food Waste in Our Country
We live in Burbank,
California. California is a
state in the United States of
America. The NRDC, the
Natural Resources Defense
Council, stated that the
United States invests lots of
its natural resources on
growing food. 50% of land
and 80% of freshwater in the
US is used for agriculture.
Despite this, 40% of food in
the US is wasted. 41 million

the population.
Food Waste at Our School
This is a picture of food that was wasted
from our students after one lunch. Our
teacher and her 6th grade class went
looking through the trash every day for a
week and they found lots of food waste. We
need to solve this problem because there
are some people in our city who don’t have
easy access to food. Meanwhile, at a single
school, we are throwing away food that
could be eaten by others.
Solutions to this Problem
One solution to this problem is we could
create a share table at our school. Kids
could put food that they don’t want on the
table. Then, volunteers could transport this
food to Burbank Temporary Aid Center.
BTAC is a place where people could go for
assistance, to eat, or shower. This table
could reduce the food waste at our school,
while helping others.

We asked Barbara Howell, the Executive Director of BTAC, some questions concerning this program.

Where are the locations of this When was this created?

“BTAC is located at 1304 W. Burbank Blvd. This is “We acquired the property in the mid 1990's and did a

building next door was for sale and BTAC purchased it to
expand capacity for both services and storage. “

What is the mission of BTAC?

“BTAC is dedicated to helping meet the short-term needs

for food and basic services necessary to live with dignity.
We strive to help create a community where the poor,
working poor, and homeless are able to access the
resources they need to become as self-sufficient as
possible and to serve the community in times of disaster.”
Burbank Temporary Aid Center
Some people think that Burbank isn’t a
community in need. Burbank is home to
many media studios like Disney, Warner
Brothers, Nickelodeon. However, there
are still people who don’t have jobs or are
unemployed. BTAC is a food pantry and
social service agency that helps those in
need. This program doesn’t necessarily
help only the homeless, but it also helps
those who are trying to avoid
homelessness. 90% of the people who
receive help at BTAC are not homeless.
Goals for the Future
The goal of Burbank Temporary Aid
Center is to provide and assist those who
are in need. This would help the
community with food insecurity, which is
a big problem. Cities have many sources
of food, but some of it is just wasted.
Programs like BTAC should exist to help
control this problem. People need food
to survive, and it’s not as easy to
maintain this. Everyone needs to step up
by not wasting food and giving to others
who don’t have as much privilege.
