SOUTHWEST MONSOON REPORT- 2022


For the State of
PUNJAB
Main Highlights
 During this year, monsoon was advanced through northern parts of Punjab on 30th June and covered the entire state of
Punjab on 1STJuly 2022. This year onset of monsoon was on normal dates of onset.
 During this monsoon season (1st Jun- 30th Sep 2022), State of Punjab received 413.7 (-6%) mm of rainfall against its
average of 438.8mm which is 6% less than the normal. However, this is within the normal range of rainfall (-19% to
+19%).
 This is the 5thconsecutive normal monsoon year in last decade (i.e. since 2011).
 Out of total 22 districts in Punjab, 10-districts have received normal rainfall, 4-district received excess,1-district
received large excess wherein rainfall in 7 districts were deficient in the state.
 District Faridkot received highest rainfall (+60%) while district Hoshiarpur observed least rainfall (-37%) during this
monsoon season.
 Month wise, rainfall in the m/o Jun 39.7mm (-27%) and Jul 219.3 mm (+36%), was normal and in Aug 58.4mm (-60%)
was deficit and in the m/o Sep it was large excess i.e. 96.5 (+24%).
 Highest rainfall received in Punjab during September month during (1901–2022) was in year 1950 when state received
431.4 mm of rainfall against its normal rainfall of 89.1 mm with departure of 384% from normal followed by 1988 and
1958 when state received 429.6 mm and 368.7 mm of rainfall respectively.

RainfallDistribution in Punjab.
Daily time series of rainfall from (1 Jun to 30 Sept) during monsoon 2022 in Punjab along with departure is
shown in Figure below. Cumulative rainfall followed normal curve till 20thJuly and thereafter above normal till
15th August and remain deficit after that till 23rdSeptember with excess rainfall in the last week of September,
overall rainfall was increased and it less by only 6% over the entire state of Punjab.

Weekly cumulative departure of Rainfall is shown below as evident from the Figure there were very large positive
departure of rainfall in 4thweek of the season thereafter slight positive departures during6th , 8th, 9thand 10thweekafter
these weeks there was large positive departure in18th week within the monsoon season. For the rest of the period
negative departures were seen.

Monthly Rainfall Distribution during Monsoon 2022

 In June 2022 Punjab state received 39.7 mm (-27%) of rainfall against 54.5 mm long period average. Highest rainfall in
Punjab during last 121 (1901–2022) was 203.3 mm recorded in 2008 which was 388.7 % above normal followed by year
1996 and 1986 with rainfall of 158.0 mm and 151.1 mm respectively. The rainfall during June 2022 was deficient in the
state where Nine (09) districts have negative departures along with Barnala, Mansa and Sangrur were largely deficient
districts. Seven (07) districts of the state reported normal rainfall. However in this season district Faridkot and
Ferozepur received largely excess rainfall along with the excess of rainfall in Pathankot district.
 In July 2022 State received 219.3 (36%) mm of rainfall against its normal rainfall of 161.4 mm which is 36% excess
than normal. Highest rainfall received in Punjab during July month during (1901–2022) was in year 1988 was 455.1
mm of rainfall against its normal rainfall of 190.5 followed by 1980 and 1993 when state received 443.8 mm and 413.9
mm of rainfall respectively. Lowest rainfall in July during (1901-2022) was in 1911 when state received 25.0 mm of
rainfall against 158.4 mm with deficit of 84.2% followed by year 1987 and 1964 when rainfall was 31.8 mm and 35.4
mm respectively. The rainfall during July 2022 was Excess in the state where One (01) district Moga has received
Largely Deficient rainfall. Eight (08) districts of the state reported normal rainfall. However in this season Eight (08)
districts received largely excess rainfall along with the excess of rainfall in Five (05) districts.
 In August 2022 State received 58.4 (-60%) mm of rainfall against its normal of 146.2 mm and was 60% Largely
Deficient than normal. Highest rainfall in Punjab during (1901–2021) was in 1908 when state received 402.7 mm of
rainfall against its normal of 152.9 mm with overall excess of 163% followed by year 1976 and 1933 when rainfall was
357.0 mm and 325.9 mm respectively. The rainfall during August 2022 was Largely Deficient in the state where Ten
(10) districts have negative departures and received Deficient rainfall and Ten (10) districts received largely deficient
rainfall. However in this season district Faridkot received largely excess rainfall along with the excess of rainfall in
Ferozepur district.
 While in September state received 96.5 mm (+24%) of rainfall against it normal of 77.7 mm and received excess.
Highest rainfall received in Punjab during September month during (1901–2022) was in year 1950 when state received
431.4 mm of rainfall against its normal rainfall of 89.1 mm with departure of 384% from normal followed by 1988 and
1958 when state received 429.6 mm and 368.7 mm of rainfall respectively. The rainfall during September 2022 was
Excess in the state where One (01) district Fazilka has received Largely Deficient rainfall along with the three (03)
districts received Deficient rainfall namely Muktsar, Rupnagar and SBS Nagar. Seven (07) districts of the state
reported normal rainfall. However in this season Six (068) districts received largely excess rainfall along with the excess
of rainfall in Five (05) districts.
