LETTER FROM
THE FOUNDER
In March of 2015, my business partner and I stood at the front of a
classroom where we delivered a “Community & Communications”
workshop on how to grow community using online tools to a group
of community volunteers from underprivileged areas. Given that
‘community’ is half of social media, that piece naturally needed
to be explored. What communities were we part of? With which
did we identify? Were we involuntarily associated with certain
communities? What were the benefits of being part of these
communities? As the stories came out, so did the tears and the
support. We did eventually demonstrated how social media can
support the creation of positive communities and the students
were quite eager to learn. The hunger for these experiences had
already become a common theme in our previous seminars.
Hamza and I left that weekend knowing we were doing something
right, and that we had to do more.

Looking back, it is clear that our success came from a few central
skills: empathy, resilience, and resourcefulness. We know that
consistently, across all industries, the most important skills for
new employees are: communication, leadership, teamwork and
emotional intelligence. These are all soft skills - skills we know
make individuals and organizations more effective and more
successful, yet, they are not taught in school.

SkillsCamp is our answer to this missing curriculum. It is our way

of equipping students, growing organizations, professionals,
newcomers and people interested in professional development
with the skills they need for success. A team that can communicate
effectively, resolve conflicts and motivate itself to realize
meaningful objectives is invaluable, regardless of the industry.
We have designed our workshops to help you harness the power
of effective team building, persuasive digital communications,
compelling presentations and empowering leadership. SkillsCamp
is our passion, our mission and now our school. We’re so glad
you’re considering working and learning with us.

They are typically associated with personality traits like emotional intelligence, good communication,
high productivity, resilience, and a strong work ethic. They are skills that provide the groundwork for
learning all other skills. These skills are often referred to as ‘people skills’, ‘life skills’, ‘essential skills’,
‘social skills’, ‘core skills’, or ‘transferable skills’.

“Hard skills”, by contrast, usually refer to the quantifiable, technical, job-specific skills. Hard skills are
often associated with highly technical professions, like nursing, software development or the trades,
like plumbing or carpentry. People often refer to these skills as ‘threshold skills’ or ‘vocational skills.’”

While soft skills are less tangible and harder to quantify, they are skills critical to all personal,
professional and organizational success. The ideal nurse would have the technical expertise to use
medical equipment, but would also have great bedside manner. The irony is that soft skills are often
harder to learn, which is why we are here to help.
