LIGAND REPLACEMENT REACTION FOR SYNTHESIS OF [Ni(NH3)6]Cl2

PROCEDURES:

1. 6 g NiCl2.6H2O was dissolved in 10 mL warm distilled water. The solution was left
in ice bath.

2. 12.5 mL concentrated aqueous NH3 was added to

NiCl2.6H2O solution. The solution was left in ice
bath until the crystal formed.

3. 10 mL ethanol was added. The formation of a solid was noted.

4. The solid was filtered by suction filtration and it was washed with cold concentrated
ammonia solution, ethanol and acetone. The product was air dried.

5. The product was weighed and recorded.

6. The % yield of product was

found.

7. A small amount of product was put into a test tube and the solubility in water was tested.

8. The product was kept in a vial for UV-vis characterisation

(Experiment 7).
