Kraj nemluvný, kraj kamenitý The land of stones, the land of silence,
a do dřeně až bídou zrytý, dug by hardship down to its substance,
kraj bez možností, ale kraj the land with no chance, yet a land
nucený stále tvrdší pěstí in tears, when forced by callous fingers
k slzám, jež mají lháti ráj, to lie that Paradise is at hand,
či ještě lépe: tak si vésti, or, better still, the land that mingles
jako by sůl, jež zpolovic salt with sugar on every lot,
už osolila krajíc šerý, as if a slice of bread, half salted,
mohla být cukrem, cukrem, který could still taste sweet, even, as noted,
zde neosladil ještě nic. everything sweet here comes to naught.
A v tomto kraji sad je starý… And in this land, there’s an old garden …
A stromy v něm, jež uschly s jary, And trees are there, since last spring barren,
kácejí otec se synem. being cut down, without regrets,
Až po kolena v divém jílku, by father and son. Up to their knee-caps
tvář ve pavučí přesiném, in clay, their faces in spider nets,
jen sem tam sáhnou do uzílku – seldom do they open their knapsacks
A žvýkající čelistí to cut off, with their chewing jaws,
stříhají strojkem hlavu hladu… the head of reappearing hunger…
Nedaleko je k listopadu, November is near, with all its languor
zříš mezi listím nelistí. of green leaves that dead foliage gnaws.
„Ach bědný kraj,“ řek lékař ztichle, “A woeful land, “ said he in silence,
„bědný je zvolna, bědný rychle, “woeful slowly, woeful in cadence
bědný i lid, lid na mukách. and woeful men, stretched on the rack.
Kámen a kámen nouzí znící Stone upon stone resounds with languor,
budí ho zrána ještě v tmách waking them early, when day’s still black,
a v tmách už vstanou katoržníci… like convicts are by a harsh ganger…
Poušť ničím nezaviněná The desert no one can unfoil
je pravá poušť… Snad proto neptá is the truest one… Therefore, maybe,
se žádný proč a nezareptá, no one asks why and shows no envy
že jinde sem je hliněná…“ that somewhere else the earth means soil…”
Před námi chladné mlhy vály Ahead of us, cold fogs were wafting
a jenom mžitky nahřívaly and only black spots warmly grafting
talíře luny nad domem. the lunar plate, high in the sky.
„Nu, já jsem doma,“ pokračoval, “Well, I’m home,” he broke off the silence,
„a když jste se mnou šel až sem “and when Fate wants – though God knows why –
a když nás oba osud provál, to join us in such an alliance,
nechtěl byste snad na chvíli would you mind completing our stroll
nahoru ke mně? Co říkáte?…“ by joining me for a small cuppa?…”
Voněly chodbou suše zlaté Full of gold was the smell of hyssop,
psosor, yzop i kavyly. and of feather-grass in the hall.
Až pozděj skvost ten prohlížeje, Later, when viewing all that treasure,
v němž prostý tvar a život děje in which simple forms and life’s leisure
měl rytmus souzvuk jevící – found each other in consonance –
chápal jsem to, co plnou scénou I understood one hidden meaning:
jsem slyšel kdys: že ze skici before a new work is announced,
dál k dílu jde se po kolenou… from its rough sketch one must go kneeling …
Bylo mi jasné, stranou lstí, I was sure, without any doubt,
že zrazujeme bez milosti that we double-cross, without pardon,
přítomnost všude tam, kde prosti our now and here, where, even hardened,
neobstojíme před smrtí. in face of death we don’t stand our ground..
Mrákoty ale nejsou rysy. But swooning gives one no clear fixture.
Krev s vínem takto spolu mísí Blood with wine is a funny mixture
hoch posekaný v šenkovně… for a youngster knifed in a pub …
A že jsem nedbal neskutečna, And as I despised all unreal
stejně se tenkrát vedlo mně. the same broth then I had to sup.
Vše, co mi k žití padlo z věčna, My life received from the eternal
bylo mi rmutem plným tmy, just wish-wash, as dark as black ink;
i mumlal jsem si v chvíli steré: to myself many times I mumbled:
Nevím, kdo bohům prádlo pere, I don’t know who God’s washing mangled,
však špínu z něho pijem my…“ but the suds from it, we must drink …”

Vzpomínal stařík, když vtom sova The old man thought back, when, quite oddly,
(jež vítala nás do domova the owl (which welcomed us so gladly,
a schoulila se potom v stín) but huddled later into shade)
vyhasle vzlétla, zakroužila… flew up sleep’ly and started circling …
– „Nu, vykládám – a bez hodin! – “Well, I harp on, but I’m afraid
Je vám ta duma vůbec milá,“ you can’t be pleased with my lamenting,”
zeptal se v snách – „já totiž čas he vaguely asked – „All year, you know,
jen v noci žil, rok celý děle I lived just nightly, with moon’s phases
jak Číňan podle luny skvělé…“ like a Chinese: on lunar basis”
Já (děl jsem) též. Dál, prosím vás! I too (I uttered). Please, carry on!
Kdo by však popřel, že jsou chvíle, Who could deny that there are hours,
kdy, byť i fantóm, při své síle when you, a phantom of all powers,
v skutečnost musíš uslábnout… must grow weak into what is true …
Tragédie se krví sytí, Tragedy feeds on man’s blood only,
ne ichorem a vůní rout, not on ichor and strong smell of rue;
v krvi ji musíš donositi – it must ripen in your blood, slowly –
a že chce jísti den co den, then be fed daily, by all means,
střeží jen tvoje ruce zdrané… held by your own hands, hard and work worn.
Jsou lžíce, lžíce přikované Spoons are there, the spoons fixed with iron
k stolům lidových jídelen – – – to the desks of public canteens – – –

Ne… Už jsi cítil, jak vzduch lační No… One already feels air aching
po uhrančivě modulační for bewitchingly modulating
vlně, jež skrývá styžský květ waves which hide Stygian flowerets
a vyvěrá a rozhodne se and gushe forth and then begin calling
pro housle, dudy, klarinet… for fiddles, bagpipes, clarinets …
Stárnoucí slavík zapěl v lese An aged nightingale started warbling
na cimbálový motiv svou, in the woods its dulcimer chords.
krajina z barvy vystoupila The countryside left its true colours
do kresby duchů, echo žila, to sketch spirits, to live in haloes,
podobna zvukům za hudbou… as sounds do behind music scores …
Pak oko vzalo konec lůny Then the eye caught the lunar rainbow,
na novou krev a nové struny, to strike new blood, new strings to follow
do kterých sáhl jistý hoch the firm hand of a certain boy.
a rozhlaholil čirý závan A pellucid zephyr resounded,
ne víc, než směl, ne víc, než moh: not more than allowed to enjoy:
Svou odpovědí všechny ovál Such answer made all feel aerated
sám chór a věčný zeměvzrůst: by the chorus and timeless growth:
zřím, jak tam různé dívky žily, see some girls living in clover,
ty, jež až dosud přeskočily those who would still be jumping over
jalovec chytrým vzletem svým; juniper wreaths from their bright start,
jiné smích loňský oplakaly, then others, who last year’s laugh pitted,
ty s okýnkem už rozbitým, with a small window, split all apart,
ty, které usouzeně znaly, then those who dolefully admitted
jak bezohledný bývá sen, how brutal a dream can become,
a jiné, které nepokývly, and others, who never consented,
nadzdvihly závoj a pak plivly… raised their veil up, spat and resented
Ale já viděl jednu jen But I … I saw there only one
Řekl jsem: radost… Ale Věční I’ve called it: joy … But those immortal
pro všechno prvopočáteční souls, which evince all rudimental,
vzbudili v nás i tesknotu. were evoking nostalgic fear.
Nevíš, kde rajský pramen tryská, You don’t know where the spurting source is
teskníš a teskníš tam i tu of that stream of heavens. There and here
a stýská se ti, blaze stýská you feel sweet languor, you feel home-sick
a záhy potom šíleně. and, soon after, you feel quite mad.
A to je láska… Přesvědčená, And this is love! … Always so certain
že za smrtí je její scéna. that its scene runs behind death’s curtain.
Však smrt je zem… Jdeš schýleně. Yet death is earth … Keep down your head!
Už mlád, nikdy jsem nepřál gestu Even when young, I disliked show-offs,
a nehledal jsem v Almagestu, nor did I consult astrologers
abych ji k hvězdě přirovnal… as to what star she would compare …
Když kdysi při stavění májí When once, behind a maypole hidden,
dost blizoučko jsem u ní stál I was standing quite close to her,
a tajil dech nad dálkou k ráji – short of my breath on way to Eden,
pojednou jasno bylo mně: I, suddenly, became aware
že božsky prostá, každodenní, that she, godlike, pure and compliant,
všemu démonickému zření dwells forever unseen and defiant
žije vždy neviditelně… of any demoniacal stare.

A toulal se, čím vítr vane… I roamed through every wind-blown corner …
Tak… Měl jsem dlouhou duši, pane, Well … My soul, sir, grew long and longer,
a vratič, ten jsem netrhal. but tansy buds I didn’t pluck.
Kamkoli jinam, jen ne zpátky! Never look back, always keep moving!
Já běgunem se stal… As a drifter, I tried my luck …
Jsou zvěsti sudby, jsou i zmatky, There are tidings of Fate, foredooming,
ale ty cenné nejvíce: but those considered as the best,
nertikulovány roky… as years come and go, one never traces …
Když vychodil jsem všechny kroky, When I walked out of all my paces,
poslal jsem napřed střevíce. it was my shoes I sent home first.
Bos, bez dokladů, bez všech věcí Barefoot, no papers, not a docket
(vandrovní knížku měl jsem přeci (itinerant pass in the pocket
v náprsní kapse anděla) of an angel, there you’d have to search),
vně Platónovy sazné sluje well out from Plato’s sooty cavern,
prokvet jsem léta plodně svá. that’s where I built up my fat perch.
Ale když osud ponižuje When Fate’s disgrace is clearly proven,
bez viny slabé, dáš se k nim. you feel no guilt to take its side.
Ostatní znáte… Žádné divy… The rest you know … One needs no master…
I psům srst lesklá zešediví Dog hair too tarnishes its lustre,
nejdříve pod obojkem zlým. and at first where collars are tight.
A uvnitř chýše… nic než ticho. And in the house … all remained silent.
A pouze matka sudolocho Only the mother, ambivalent,
bila se v koutě do prsou – – – sat in the dark and beat her breast – – –
Vždy dopuštění slepě padne, Adversities befall us blinded,
slepecky táhnem slepou hrou, blind play we in a blind contest.
než řeknem: pivoň! – květ nám zvadne, Ere we’ve said: sniff a rose! – can’t find it,
a osud-slepec zvůlí svou and Fate – blind in its monstrous swell –
i srdci určí slepé metrum… prescribes to our hearts a blind meter…
A tak tu jsme, hozeni větrům: So we are here as wild winds’ litter:
loučenec v slzách s loučenkou. A Fair-Well man in tears with a Fairy-Well.
A zdrží-li nás los náš chvíli, And if our lot is, for a moment,
neděje se tak bez násilí: held back, it’s never without torment:
hostitel umí přibodnout the host knows how to run a fork
vidličkou ruku hosta, který through a guest’s hand, who, for some reason,
od stolu vstává změnit kout… leaves the table to change his yoke …
Zeď žalářní máš všemi směry… All around are walls of a prison …
Nevěřím tedy úsměvům Thus, I don’t trust those smiling mouths
na tváři mrtvých… Všechno mýlí… on dead faces … All is confusing …
Smrt dvojsmyslně klíčem kvílí… Doubtful is the key Death is using …
Odmyká? Zamkla? Který dům? Unlocking? Locking? And which house?

Týž den dumaje o údělu The same day, when brooding over
Terezky v nesmrtelném pelu – Terese’s everlasting dower –
dál zpovídal jsem staříka… I went on, hassling the old man …
„Terezka? Terez Planetová?“ “Terese? Tessy? My fateful planet?”,
řek jako ten, kdo naříká: said he as one who wants to complain:
„Tak po třiceti letech znova “Thirty years later, since I made it
já kdekoho se na ni ptal, back home, I asked there everywhere:
když vrátil jsem se na vinice, in the village and at the vineyard.
však nikdo už, ach, nikdo více But no one, ah, no one around
ji nepamatoval – – – could remember her – – –“

Podnět k této básni dala mi skvělá črta Leoše Janáčka The exquisite note of Leoš Janáček ”My girl from Tatra mountains”
Moje děvče z Tater motivated me to write this poem.
