In our view the future brings autonomous navigation, or realistically; “manned automation”. By this, we mean smart decision support to promote
the maximum automation of navigation equipment. We have to keep in mind that people will still operate the ships and pursue the convenience of
a user-friendly interface and redundancy. In the coming years, JRC | Alphatron Marine is inspired by a concept of smart ship navigation under the

Case study: Olympic boosts seafarer safety

with wireless IoT solution
During a press tour around the west coast of Norway, Digital Ship visited technology start-up ScanReach

the safety of seafarers and driving fuel efficiency across the Olympic fleet.

Digital Ship

Shaping shipping’s digital culture

A strong onboard digital culture is critical in ensuring digital tools and technologies are adopted and used
effectively. During Digital Ship’s recent event in Rotterdam, Elena Matzaridou, digital strategy coordinator
at Dalex Shipping explained how the company is shaping its digital culture and bridging the gap
between onshore and offshore to enable a successful digital transformation.

I
n 1968, George Dalacouras founded
Dalex Shipping, which owns and
manages 14 bulk carriers worldwide.
Now run by his two sons Vassilis
and Michalis, the team is focussed on its
digital transformation to deliver safe and
environmentally conscious ship manage-
ment services.

Leadership, organisation,
design
When the Dalex Shipping decided to push
ahead with its digital transformation 15
years ago, it first started by examining its
current operating model and particularly
how its IT solutions were used and regard-
ed by people.
“The first thing we did was to look at
the old processes we had and how we were
going to move to the new business pro-
cesses we wanted, and how the infrastruc-
ture would need to change,” explained Elena Matzaridou, digital strategy coordinator at Dalex Shipping speaking during Digital Ship’s conference in Rotterdam in September 2022

Multifunctional Information & Navigation Display System

In our view the future brings autonomous navigation, or realistically; “manned automation”. By this, we mean smart decision support to promote
the maximum automation of navigation equipment. We have to keep in mind that people will still operate the ships and pursue the convenience of
a user-friendly interface and redundancy. In the coming years, JRC | Alphatron Marine is inspired by a concept of smart ship navigation under the
slogan “The Human Touch in Technology”.

With the futuristic autonomous sailing vision in our Pre-defined modes are a crucial part of smart Depending on the used mode or settings, a

FURUNO ENVISION
A revolutionary solution
Designed for the future of navigation

AR Navigation System

www.furuno.com
Driving the Digitalization of Navigation
The FURUNO ENVISION series is our all-new advanced “AR Navigation System” (Augmented Reality Navigation System)
that provides an advanced navigation support tool, using the power of AR to go beyond reality.

Thanks to a camera pointed forward of the vessel, an image of the front view projects on a display and all the necessary
navigation information is superimposed over this live video imagery by our AR technology. Even in adverse weather or
visibility conditions, you can clearly view other vessels' routes and critical information, as well as own ship data, allow-
ing you stress-free maneuvering and navigation. This very intuitive way to display and share the information between
the captain and the bridge team provides enhanced situational awareness, crew confidence, watchman support, and
allows for better coordination of crew members.

The FURUNO ENVISION series aims to contribute to the safety and security of the voyage by offering visual support to
maneuvering and navigation during any operation, a further technological step towards autonomous navigation.
