SOCIAL MEDIA EXPOSURE AND THE SOCIAL AND POLITICAL

AWARENESS OF GRADE 9 STUDENTS
OF THE SAN PABLO CITY INTEGRATED HIGH SCHOOL

II.Area of Study : SOCIAL STUDIES and SOCIAL MEDIA

III.Background of the Study/Rationale :

The relevance of this study derives from the fact that the youth has a significant role to
play in our society, not only in the future, but more importantly now. This is the right and best
time to teach, educate and train them. According to Robert Kennedy, “This world demands the
qualities of youth: not a time of life but a state of mind, a temper of the will, a quality of
imagination, a predominance of courage over timidity, of the appetite for adventure over the life
of ease." These are big words, the state of mind, will, courage, imagination and adventure. And
this is precisely what the youth needs in this time of their lives – to be educated and trained in
order to have a mindset prepared for their future role.
Aside from family, school, community and traditional media, the youth get their
information largely from social media. The information given is more interactive, user-centered,
briefer, easier to process and visually attractive. People are increasingly posting online their
views concerning politics and social issues, sharing news articles, ‘following’ political figures,
watching videos connected to politics and ‘tweeting’ about politics. Social media has been
recognized for facilitating young people's social and political engagement, a venue where they
draw information and at the same time express themselves. It now serve as an ever available,
though not fully reliable reference where they can ask anything at anytime. It supplies them not
only knowledge, but awareness of precisely every issue of the world. Through access to
information, one gains knowledge, and with knowledge is the prospect of interest and
participation.

Awareness raising is very powerful, because it educates people about topics which are
new to them and encourages them to participate in bringing change. Awareness raising means
making people conscious about a problem or issue. You want to make a certain topic or issue
more visible within a community. It is purely about informing people and giving them new bits
of information. The goal is to make people understand the importance of a certain issue and find
support to address it. https://www.youthdoit.org/themes/awareness-raising/

This study has a purpose of determining the influence of social media exposure among
Grade 9 on their social and political awareness. With that knowledge in mind, be able to propose
ways on how social media can be utilized to develop a better sense of social responsibility and
political awareness among these young people.

Statement of the Problem

One common preoccupation of an average teenager nowadays is the social media. With
access to technology and Internet, especially with their Smartphones, they can easily search for
any topic of their interest, play online games and especially connect with their friends and more.
With the 2018 Global Digital Report that Filipinos’ social media usage of almost four hours
daily, it is undeniable that social media now plays a role in influencing and shaping the minds
and awareness of teenagers of their environment.
