Fiber optics – Multimode, Monomode
Multimode
For multimode signal transmission several wave lengths (modes) are in use.
Because light can go several ways signal interferences happen (differential mode delay). Therefore multimode
fiber is not qualified for data transmission via long distance and high data rate.
Fiber 50/125 µm and 62,5/125 µm are always multimode fibers.
Multimode fibers are usually used for light with a wave length of 850 nm or 1300 nm.

Monomode/Singlemode
The signal transmission runs via a (mono, single) light wave (mode).
Singlemode fiber is used when long distances and/or big band widths are necessary. Because of dispersion
signal disortion can appear.
Monomode fibers have a very thin core. The identifier of a monomode fiber is e.g. 9/125, where the diameter of
the fiber core is 9 µm, the out side diameter is 125 µm. It´s not possible to see the distinction between multimode
and monomode if it is not printed on the cable.
Monomode fibers use usually wave lengths of 1310 nm or λ = 1550.

When monomode, when multimode?

In contrast to multimode fibers in singlemode fibers no mode dispersion appears. This is the reason why
monomode fibers are preferred for long distances and/or high data rates.
But since monomode fibers have a much smaller core than multimode fibers the practical handling is more
difficult. Therefore multimode fibers are preferred for short distances. Furthermore singlemode fibers are much
more expensive.

Fiber optics – connectors

ST-connector (stick and twist) are connectors with bayonet caps. They are suited for monomode fibers as well as multimode
fibers. Den ST-connector is available in the „normal“ version and lockable. The lockable version is called VST-connector. Siemens
uses for this connector type the name BFOC (Bayonet Fiber Optic Connector).

In 2002 the SC-connector replaced the ST-connectorr as a standard LAN-connector. Meanwhile it has been replaced by the LC-
connector. It can be used for multimode- and singlemode fiber. The advantage over ST-connector is the Push-Pull-technique. That
is, the connector locks automatically with plugging in and relocks with disconnecting. Because of this situation duplex connectors are
available (two connectors connected by a duplex-clip).

In the duplex version the LC-connector (Lucent connector) needs the space of the copper-RJ45 connector and therefore it
needs only half of the space of the SC connector. The LC-connector is availble for multimode- or singlemode applications. It is
used as a connector to mini-GBICs.

31/08/2021 2. SICAM PAS HARDWARE Page: 31

LAN - cable
The color of cables is no indicator of any category ! ! !
Category 3 supports performance of speech and data of up to 16 MHz or 10 Mbps.

Category 4 supports performance of speech and data of up to 20 MHz or 16 Mbps.

Category 3 and 4 can not be used in the todays highspeed networks and are replaced against Cat5 cables if a
100baseT network is used.

Category 5 (CAT5), published in1991, was the de facto standard for 100 Mbps networks in the 1990ths.
Category 5e (CAT5e) published in 1999, was developed for full duplex transmission via 4 wire pairs with 100 MHz
applications. The CAT5e standard offered more expansion space and was the basis for the support of gigabit
ethernet with 4 connections. CAT5e is still used in many companies even if it is not used with new installation.

Category 6 (CAT6)–Class E is specified for frequency of 250 MHz and increases the bandwidth capacity for using
the gigabit ehternet transmission. Since some years this standard is the first choice for new cable installation. CAT6
supports 1000BASE-T and in some cases even for the installation of 10GBASE-T (10-GbE).
Die advanced category 6 (CAT6a)–class Ea has been published in February 2008. This standard is used for 10-
gigabit ethernet data transmission via 4 pair copper cables. CAT6a expands the electrical specifications of CAT6
standard from 250 Mhz to 500 MHz.

Category 7 (CAT7)–Class F defines the minimum standard for fully shielded cables (each copper line is shielded
plus shield of all) for data transmission of up to 600 MHz. This standard allows higher performance for superior
applications like broadband video. It is also a good alternative for typical fiber optics applications because of the
price. Since each CAT7 pair is shielded these cables are optimal for environments with high electro magnetic
interference.
Category 7a (CAT7a)–Class 7a cables are fully shielded and used for frequencies up to 1000 MHz. These cables
can easily transmit 10 GbE and have duration of life of up to 15 years and more.

UI – User Interface – 3 Tools
The SICAM PAS User Interface consists of three independent programs :
 SICAM PAS UI – Configuration
This program is used for parameterization of the project specific applications
 SICAM PAS UI – Operation
Here the user gets an overview of the situation of the applications, interfaces and
device connections.
 SICAM PAS Value Viewer
This is a tool for engineering, commissioning and operation. It permits both the
visualisation of the process and system status, and the command execution for test
purposes.

31/08/2021 5. SICAM PAS UI CONFIG Page: 71

Starting Parameterization

• UI-Configuration is the
parameterization tool for SICAM PAS
system. All the information to be
processed, all the communication
interfaces and all IEDs have to be
defined here.

Mapping - Source
• With the mapping tab you are able to define which messages / commands shall be forwarded to
which end device (field device to control center and vice versa)
Mapping consists of two
steps:
 mapping of source
 mapping of destination
Any field device (e.g. RTU,
protection device, BCU, etc.) is a
source.
Any control station (Local HMI or
Remote Control Center) is a
destination
In the left pane of the window we
select the desired source (or
destination).
Ticking the “Use” checkbox, we
define in general the message to be
forwarded.
31/08/2021 5. SICAM PAS UI CONFIG Page: 81
Mapping - Destination
With the second step we
define if the message has
to be forwarded to a
control station.

In order to perform this we

have to select the desired
Control Center or SCC
Station, and have to tick
the desired messages.

Topology
While ”Configuration" shows a technically oriented view of the system, the “Topology” displays a process
oriented view of the station
 e.g. The (technological) name for Feeder Q1 is:
SICAM PAS PQS\PC-245-20\IEC 60870-5-101 Master\Interface\eRTU\Door open
but in SCC it appears as:
SICAM PAS PQS\Region East\SSTN North Pelton\110kV\Feeder 1\Door open

31/08/2021 5. SICAM PAS UI CONFIG Page: 84

Templates
The tab “Templates” is needed several times during configuration.
• Often several IEDs with the
same settings (so called
“typicals”) are used in a
substation. In case a message
name has to be changed in all
IEDs, we just have to change the
name once in the respective
template.
• „Templates“ is also used to
define new messages (e.g. results
of a grouping) for the automation
function
• Furthermore this tab contains
the function „Normalization“ in
order to modify messages (e.g. for
scaling analogs or inverting
alarms)

IEC 61850 - Speed
The protocol IEC 103 typically supports data rates of 9600 bit per second.

IEC 103

In contrast to IEC 103, IEC 61850 works nowadays with Fast Ethernet (100 megabits per
second). This is about 10.000 times faster than IEC 103.
If required the data rate can be expanded to up to 10 gigabits per second.

IEC 61850

31/08/2021 12. IEC 61850 Page: 173

IEC 61850 – future-proof
IEC 61850 uses ethernet as a communication medium.
If in the future a newer and better way for data transmission will be developed, IEC 61850
can be easily adapted to the new technology.
No other protocol is able to support this feature.

IEC 61850

The communication standard IEC 61850 strictly separates data and services of the required
communication technology. That is, if there are new and faster ways of data transmission you
just need to change the “vehicle”, data and services keep equal.

IEC 61850

31/08/2021 12. IEC 61850 Page: 174

IEC 61850 - Hardware
Precondition for a high data rate is high quality equipment.
Even from this point of view IEC 61850 shows a lot of advantages.
IEC 61850 uses communication technologies only, which have been already successfully
approved for many years in offices.
Even a mixture of different communication technologies is possible: Electrical or optical, coaxial,
twisted pair or FO. The standardized hardware makes the installation easy and save which
leads to a cost reduction.

IEC 61850 - Interoperability

A big advantage of IEC 61850 is the standardization of services, description language and
interfaces.

That means, each vendor of IEC 61850 compatible devices has to develop according to the
IEC 61850 standard. Therefore it is generally possible that devices of different vendors can
talk to each other in the same network without changing the protocol.

In order to configure IEC 61850 compatible devices all vendors have to use the same
configuration language SCL.

SCL stands for Substation Configuration Language

31/08/2021 12. IEC 61850 Page: 182

IEC 61850 – The Configuration Language SCL

SCL:
Substation Configuration Language is based on XML

XML:
eXtended Markup Language is based on HTML
XML is a neutral format for data exchange. Mostly used in documentation.
More and more XML is used for configuration and data exchange of automation applications.
• XML is not a programming language ! ! !
• XML is not a database ! ! !

HTML:
HyperText Markup Language is a text based language for structuring of contents like texts,
pictures and hyper links in documents. HTML documents are the basis of the World Wide Web
and can be depicted by webbrowsers. Along with the real text HTML contains additional
information in terms of meta data. These meta data give information about the author, the
language or the colour of the text.

14. SNMP – SIMPLE NETWORK
MANAGEMENT PROTOCOL

31/08/2021 14. SNMP Page: 213

Network monitoring via SNMP
Networked automation systems use increasingly Ethernet as a communication standard.
Redundancies of the network and the components increase the reliability. The outage of a single
component does not lead to a total breakdown. Nevertheless, it is necessary to install a quick and
easy error detection which realizes an outage and signalizes it immediately.

SICAM PAS allows to monitor system components supporting SNMP (Simple Network
Management Protocol), e.g. SIPROTEC relays, Switches or SICAM Station Units.

The SNMP protocol is based on UDP/IP (User Datagram Protocol/ Internet Protocol).

31/08/2021 14. SNMP Page: 214

SNMP - Basics
SNMP can monitor and control network components (SICAM PAS just supports monitoring)
There is an SNMP Manager (e.g. SICAM PAS) and SNMP Agents (e.g. SIPROTECs,
RuggedCom Switches).
The agent is a piece of software which runs e.g. at a switch and monitors the status of that
switch.

SNMP Manager SNMP Agent SNMP Agent

31/08/2021 14. SNMP Page: 215

SNMP - Basics
SNMP supports no „login-password“ functionality, there is a login only, but no password.
There are typical 2 login-types, which are called „community“,

• the community „public“

• the community „private“

„public“ allows to read only, „private“ allows to read and write.

SNMP Manager SNMP Agent SNMP Agent

31/08/2021 14. SNMP Page: 216

What is a MIB

The idea of SNMP is to monitor and control networks and their components
(i.e. switches, routers, etc). This ought to work fast but with low bandwidth.
There should be transmitted no text, just OIDs (Object Identifier).

SNMP Manager SNMP Agent SNMP Agent

All OIDs of a certain device are structured in a MIB (Management Information Base)

31/08/2021 14. SNMP Page: 217

What is a MIB

As SNMP is a standard, a structure was

created like the tree of the windows
explorer.
The screenshot on the right shows the
structure of the „Basis – MIB“ which is
called „MIB-2“. This MIB-2 is the
standard and contains all common
information

If a vendor needs to use its own texts

or settings, the vendor has to create
an additional MIB. The information of
the MIB has to be mounted to the
MIB-2 at the mounting point
„enterprise“. That means, the „Basis
MIB“ is still persistent.

Configuration of SNMP in SICAM PAS

• In SICAM PAS, SNMP is used to monitor network components (no control)

• Typically SICAM PAS monitors ethernet switches (e.g. RuggedCom) and EN-100 modules
(in SIPROTEC devices)
• Device descriptions for several devices are available in a library
• Any device capable of SNMP can be integrated

31/08/2021 14. SNMP Page: 219

How to check the content of a PXD file
We can simply use Excel.

31/08/2021 15. HMI Interface and Topology Page: 238

Content of a PXD file
All the HMI mapped messages appear with their names and their internal addresses.

Note: Don’t save your file with Excel!

31/08/2021 15. HMI Interface and Topology Page: 239

Additional hidden Columns
Back in Mapping we have to display some hidden columns.

31/08/2021 15. HMI Interface and Topology Page: 240

Additional hidden Columns

For each of the 3 visible columns,

there are 2 hidden also.

31/08/2021 15. HMI Interface and Topology Page: 241

Additional hidden Columns

If a message is ticked, the name is copied into the 2 columns. Why?

Because in SCC, there are 3 different items, and each of them needs a name:
• Name for an Alarm Logging Entry (Event List /Alarm List)
• Name for a Picture Variable (Tag)
• Name for an Archive Variable (just for Measured and Metered Values)

31/08/2021 15. HMI Interface and Topology Page: 242

What is the Topology for?
With the Topology we can define message groups to structure information.
The topological name is mainly used to be exported to the HMI system.
These names usually appear in an Event List or an Alarm List and should be understandable
for the operators of the substation.

Where to structure information?
Topology allows us to create
certain information levels to
structure information. The
topological levels´ names
replaces the technological name
string. Together with the
information name this text will be
used in the HMI system (mainly
for lists).

31/08/2021 15. HMI Interface and Topology Page: 245

Example how to structure information
All desired messages can now be dropped into the respective topological level.
This is a naming issue only!

31/08/2021 15. HMI Interface and Topology Page: 246

At the very beginning
For every new device in the Configuration, you also get a new level in Topology.
All the device related process messages appear here.
If the device level was deleted, all messages return to the top level (SICAM)

Where do the message names come from

Topological prefix Technological prefix Information name

Technological name SICAM / PC-231-62 / IEC 60870-101 Master / Interface / miniRTU_1 / Buffer overflow

Topological name miniRTU_1 / Buffer overflow  this will be used in HMI

16. INTRODUCTION TO
SICAM SCC

31/08/2021 16. HMI Interface and Topology Page: 251

What is SICAM SCC?
TeleControlCenter

 SICAM SCC visualizes and archives SICAM SCC

the process data of SICAM PAS. (SCC= Substation Control Center)
SICAM SCC allows to control your
substation (command execution)

 SICAM SCC is usually

located in the substation.

WinCC Explorer
The central point for provisioning
settings in SCC is the WinCC
Explorer.
From here you can start all
configuration tools of SCC.
We mainly need the following:

• Graphics Designer

• Alarm Logging

• Tag Logging

• SICAM PAS Wizard

• Text Library

• User Administrator

31/08/2021 16. HMI Interface and Topology Page: 254

SCC – an example
At the right side you can see an
example of an SCC screen.
Here you may…
• switch between several pictures
• monitor and change the user login
• change the language
• set bay/telecontrol blocking
• switch ON / OFF circuit breakers
and disconnectors
• monitor and change tap position
• observe values in digital or analog
view

In order to create a picture like this

you need to use the WinCC
Graphics Designer

31/08/2021 16. HMI Interface and Topology Page: 255

Graphics Designer
The Graphics Designer is part of the WinCC software and is used to create the visualization of
process values.

The Graphics Designer contains

several features as general
graphic programs.
Here we can assign process
variables (tags) to the graphical
objects (symbols).
In order to obtain these process
variables we need to run the
SICAM PAS Wizard.

31/08/2021 16. HMI Interface and Topology Page: 256

SICAM PAS Wizard
The SICAM PAS wizard imports the process variables into SCC from a *.pxd file which was
created by SICAM PAS.

We can decide which kind of variables we need

import:
• Variables for Tag Management (picture)
• Measurements and counters (to be archived)
• Variables for Alarm Logging (Event/Alarm List)

31/08/2021 16. HMI Interface and Topology Page: 257

SICAM PAS Wizard
Furthermore the SICAM PAS Wizard…

• imports the SICAM symbol library

• creates the SICAM text library
• creates the SICAM specific alarm- and event
tables

31/08/2021 16. HMI Interface and Topology Page: 258

Symbol library I
The symbol library contains a multitude of symbols seperated in several folders.

Text library
Texts can be customized in the text library to meet individual requirements.
You can define and switch between several languages
(not only english and german).
• There are in total 17 „value text groups“ in the text
library. This is to define „OFF“/“ON“ or
„OPEN“/“CLOSE“ or „ACTIVE“ / „INACTIVE“ etc.

31/08/2021 16. HMI Interface and Topology Page: 262

Alarm Logging – Eventlist
SICAM SCC provides 3 types of lists:
1. Event List
Displays typically all information except measurements and counters

2. Protection Message List

Is like an Event list with a pre-defined filter for protection related messages only.

31/08/2021 16. HMI Interface and Topology Page: 263

Alarm Logging – Alarm list

3. Alarm List
Shows only messages which are defined as alarms or warnings.
The operator has to acknowledge them.

All lists can be customized

31/08/2021 16. HMI Interface and Topology Page: 264

Tag Logging, Tag Management, Alarm Logging
The data exchange between SICAM PAS and SICAM SCC can be Measurement/counter history
split up into 3 data groups: SIMATIC WinCC

 The measurements and counter values are saved in

Message Classes

The message class mainly defines, wether a

message is a raised/cleared message and
wether it has to be acknowledged in any
alarm list.

A message class can consist of a number of

message types which just define the colours
of the message text to appear in the lists.

Message Classes assigned to imported messages

The Wizard automatically assigns 2 (of 6) SICAM Message Classes to all imported messages.
All Single Points get the class „SICAM Message“,
all Double Points and Transients get „SICAM Message DI/TR/FB“.

21. SWITCHING AUTHORITY

31/08/2021 21. Switching Authority Page: 326

Definition of Switching Authority

One operator at a time

Because of security reasons it is usually not allowed, that 2 or more operators
(local or remote) have control access to a substation at the same time

The Switching Authority is the right of one operator (one Control station), to
control the substation via the control system, i.e. to execute commands.
At the same time this right was cancelled for all other operators.

23. PAS REDUNDANCY

31/08/2021 23. PAS Redundancy Page: 351

The PAS redundancy concept
 Redundancy means to double existing resources, to increase the security. During undisturbed
operation the doubled hardware would functionally not be necessary. Redundancy in SICAM PAS
can be implemented in various levels:
 2 equally configured PAS/PQS systems (system redundancy)
 2 communication channels to a sub-device (interface redundancy)
 2 redundant configured sub-devices (device redundancy)
 System redundancy + interface redundancy or device redundancy = full redundancy
system redundancy interface redundancy device redundancy full redundancy

Process Process Process Process

Redundant “Full Server – DIP” Configuration

A PAS system can consist of a Full Server and up to 6 DIPs. In redundant systems both, Full
Server and DIPs would be redundant.

31/08/2021 23. PAS Redundancy Page: 353

Simultaneous System and Interface/Device Redundancy

If enabled system redundancy and interface redundancy, there are 4 functional equal
communication channels between Full Servers and sub-device. Each Full Server is connected
with the sub-device via 2 interfaces.

System Switchover

System switchover because of outage of the process leading system

Both Full Servers continuously exchange operation and und process data. This makes sure, that
both systems always have an own complete process image of the whole substation.

The system in standby mode detects the outage of the process leading system by missing
responds on requests. In this case the standby system automatically takes over, and switches to
leading mode.

Primary Full Server Secondary Full Server

Continuous status and process data exchange

31/08/2021 23. PAS Redundancy Page: 356

System Switchover
On outage of the process leading Full Server, the Standby-Full Server takes over and together all
DIPs also switch over to the secondary system.
On outage of a DIP, only this one switches over. All not affected computers remain in their current
redundancy state.
The leading computer remains as active, even though the previously leading computer would
operate again.

Internal Settings

Changes of operational settings, like

• Switching Authority
• Bay Blocking
• Telecontrol Blocking
• Substitution
• Flags in SoftPLC
• Remanent data in SoftPLC
will automatically be taken over into the secondary system
Primary Full Server Secondary Full Server

31/08/2021 23. PAS Redundancy Page: 358

Manual Switchover
The manual system switchover always is computer specific, i.e. the redundancy state of Full
Servers and DIPs can change independently.
On a manual system switchover, all processes from the process leading computer will be switching
over to the secondary machine.

* = preferred

Switchover Time

31/08/2021 23. PAS Redundancy Page: 360

SICAM SCC
SICAM SCC always simultaneously communicates with
both PAS systems to avoid any interruption of the
process connection in case of a fault. This ensures, in
monitoring direction, alarms and analogs always to
arrive at SICAM SCC, independent which Full Server
once provided the messages.

Commands from SCC will always be forwarded to only

one of the redundant PAS systems.

Configuring a Redundant System

the computer name and IP
address of the redundant
machine.

A copy of this database

will later be loaded into the
redundant computer.

31/08/2021 23. PAS Redundancy Page: 362

Transferring a data base to a Redundant System

 Update system and tick “With database copy”

 Open UI Operation on the secondary Full Server and update system once more there.
A System Update on both PAS computers has just to be done the very first time. Later, a System
Update has just to be initiated from one of the Full Servers.
If the compatibility keys of both databases match, the system starts up and synchronizes with the
partner system.

Network configuration for Redundant Systems
Redundant systems exchange process and system data among each other during operation.
Therefore they use network adapters (System adapter).
We recommend a redundant configuration for communication among the two systems.
System redundancy only works when all SICAM PAS computers are in the same domain with the
same user logged in.
