240. Converting an empirical formula into a molecular formula requires that you know the
molar mass of the compound so you can calculate a molecular formula based on the
fact that an empirical formula can always be multiplied by an integer n to yield a
molecular formula. Solve for the molecular formula of acetic acid with an empirical
formula CH2O
Answer: n x (CH2O) n= 60.05g/mol/30.02 g/mol = 2 therefore the molecular
formula for acetic acid is C2H4O2

249. How will you describe alkenes in terms of the following physical properties?
I Physical state
II Solubility
III Boiling point
IV Melting point
V Polarity
Answer: Physical state-The first three members of the alkene group are
gaseous in nature, the next fourteen members are liquids and the
remaining alkenes are solids.
Solubility-The alkenes are insoluble in water due to their nonpolar
characteristics but are completely soluble in non polar
solvents such as benzene, ligroin, etc.
The boiling points of the compounds increase as the number of
carbon atoms in the compound increases.
The melting points of these double-bonded compounds depend
upon the positioning of the molecules.
The melting point of alkenes is similar to that of alkanes.
However, cis-isomer molecules have a lower melting point than
trans- isomers as the molecules are packed in a U-bending shape.
Alkenes are weakly polar just like alkanes but are slightly more
reactive than alkanes due to the presence of double bonds.

250. How will you name the structure?

Answer:

.
The four-carbon chain is numbered from the end with the chlorine
atom. This puts the substituents on positions 1 and 2 (numbering
from the other end would put the substituents on positions 3 and
4). Four carbon atoms means that the base name of this compound
will be butane. The bromine at position 2 will be described by
adding 2-bromo-; this will come at the beginning of the name, since
bromo- comes before chloro- alphabetically. The chlorine at
position 1 will be described by adding 1-chloro-, resulting in the
name of the molecule being 2-bromo-1-chlorobutane.
