Ionic Bonds
Ionic compounds
❑Formed when two oppositely charged ions are attracted by
electrostatic forces.

Writing Chemical Formulas Ionic Binary compound
Writing Chemical Formulas Ionic Binary compound
❑ A simple compound consisting of two atoms are known as binary compounds.
❑ There are three steps in writing the chemical formulas of binary compounds.
Write the chemical formula of beryllium chloride
Be Cl
Step 2: Write the cations with the oxidation numbers as superscript followed by the anions.
+2 -
Be Cl
Step 3: Use the criss-cross method to determine the chemical formula of the compound and
remove charges
Be+2 Cl- BeCl2
Mg O
Step 2: Write the cations with the oxidation numbers as superscript followed by the anions.

Mg O
Step 3: Use the criss-cross method to determine the chemical formula of the compound and
remove charges
Mg+2 O-2 MgO
Ga N
Step 2: Write the cations with the oxidation numbers as superscript followed by the anions.
+3 -3
Ga N
Step 3: Use the criss-cross method to determine the chemical formula of the compound and
remove charges
Ga+3 N-3 GaN
Sr F
Step 2: Write the cations with the oxidation numbers as superscript followed by the anions.

Sr
Step 3: Use the criss-cross method to determine the chemical formula of the compound and
remove charges
Sr+2 F- SrF2
Answer: The chemical formula of strontium fluoride is SrF2
Ionic compounds are more complex consisting of three or more atoms. These
compounds are made of polyatomic ions, a charged molecule that is made up of two
or more atoms.

remove charges
Ca+2 (PO4)-3 Ca3(PO4)2
Answer: The chemical formula of calcium phosphate is Ca3(PO4)2
Naming Ionic Compounds
An ionic compound is made up of a metal and one or more non-metals.
1. A binary ionic compound is made up of a metal and a nonmetal. Write the name of
the metal followed by the non-metal ending in “-ide”.
Examples:
Be2SO4 = beryllium sulfate
Mg(NO3)2 = magnesium nitrate
Zn(OH)2 = zinc hydroxide
▪ Some binary ionic compounds have cations with multiple
charges
CrF2 = chromium (II) fluoride
PbO = lead (II) oxide
Co3N2 = cobalt (II) nitride
TiI4 = titanium (IV) iodide
