 Compound Adjectives

1. 不用 Compound Adjectives 的情况:


i. 名词前出现副词 (adverb) 来修饰它
It was a terribly hot day and not suitable for any outdoor activity.
It was an amazingly good idea.
Paul is a very talented student.
Terribly hot 和 amazingly good 都不是 compound adjectives, 而是副词修饰名词

2. 有些词如:well, fast, best (形容词/ 副词) 在修饰名词时, 依然需要放 Hyphen


来表达清晰的意思
Ali is the best-known player on the pitch. (Ali is known better than any other player.)
Ali is the best known player on the pitch. (Ali could be the best player of all the
known players on the pitch.)

 Adjectives ending with -ed

-ed 结尾的形容词有被动的意思。主要描述名词 (主语/ 东西) 因某个动作或事情


的性质而改变心情/ 形态
Exp: interested broken windows dried leaves coloured pencils
Kim Seng is interested in drawing. (画画是个有趣的活动,所以 Kim Seng 对它产生
兴趣)
He changes the punctured tyre before continuing his journey to Pulau Pinang.
(Punctured tyre-轮胎爆因为某个动作或行为造成)
Please send me the detailed information by 5.00 p.m.
(Information-资料,是不会自己变详细的-detail,需要经过整理)
The pupils feel bored when Mr. Wong teaches them Mathematics.

 Adjectives ending with -ing

-ing 结尾的形容词把名词修饰成有主动的意思。如果名词前/ 后有-ing 结尾的形容


词 (主动),该名词会对一些事物/ 人/ 动物造成影响。(被动)
Exp: an amazing activity an interesting activity a breathtaking view
An interesting activity (有趣的活动会让参与者感到有趣, 所以有主动进行/造成影响
的意思)
The participants feel interested after taking part in those interesting activities.
Most people enjoy watching Marvel movies because they are amazing.
(多数人享受观看漫威电影因为它们惊奇。漫威电影的惊奇元素导致大部分的人
享受观看它。)
Lim queues up in front of a vending machine to buy his favourite drinks.
(Vending machine-自动贩卖机。因此, 形容词要用-ing 形态的以表达主动进行的意
思。)
The boring class make all the students bury their heads in their books.
The dancing girl on the stage is my neighbour whom I have recognised for five years.
 Superlative Degree of Adjective (最高级形容词)

I. 用于比较两个或以上的东西时, 表示最的意思
II. 通常以 the ...est 或 the most...est 的形式

用 the...est 的情况:

1) 当形容词有单或双音节时:
The Sweetest The Strongest The Tallest

2) 当形容词有单或双音节, 并以 y 作词尾时,把 y 去掉加 iest


The happiest The busiest The easiest

3) 当单或双音节形容词以 consonant 结尾, consonant 前出现 vowel 时, 该形容词


必须在加上-er / -ier 前,重叠 consonant
Big=> The biggest Thin=> The thinnest Wet=> The wettest

形容词以 the most…出现的情况:

1) 当形容词超过两个音节时:
Comfortable=> The Most Comfortable Expensive=> The Most Expensive
The red shirt with extraordinary designs is the most expensive shirt in the outlet. It is
the most comfortable shirt I have ever worn in my life.

2) 当形容词以-al, -ant,-ent, -ous, -able,-ic, 结尾时:


Specific=> The most specific Pleasant=> The most pleasant

 More 和 most 后面的形容词保持原本


More comfortable Most comfortable More pleasant Most pleasant

3. Compound Adjectives (复合形容词)
复合形容詞 (compound adjectives) 是由至少兩個字所組成的形容詞;复合形容詞
中的字通常用连字號 (hyphen) 连接起來以表示其為形容詞。
Exp:
good-looking people (长得好看的人) long-lasting relationship (持久的友情)
hard-earned money (辛苦赚的钱) open-minded (思想开放)
bad-tempered (坏脾气) heart-broken man (心碎)
three-week vacation (三个星期的假期) ten-minute walk (10 分钟的路)
time-consuming activity (耗时的工作) ten-storey building
4. 确认 Compound Adjectives 的方法:
当名词前出现两个形容词时,可在他们之间加入 and。如果加入 and 后, 两个
形容词仍无法表达完整的意思,就必须加人 hyphen
Exp: Large proud roaster (又大又骄傲的公鸡) = Large and proud roaster
Time-consuming activity (耗时的工作) = Time and consuming activitity?
Good-looking people (长得好看的人) = Good and looking people?
