Engine timing mechanism


The purpose of this exercise is to get familiar with the diesel engine timing mechanism. In
this exercise you will get familiar with main components and where they are located.
After going through the theory session and performing this exercise; you will be able to
identify the timing mechanism and perform service tasks.

 Tools for measuring the timing gear backlash
 Tools to install the rocker arm shaft
 Tools for adjusting the valves

2. Open the service information of your training engine.


Which is the correct torque values for the following components in the timing gear
system:

- Double idler gear, screw:

Step 1________Nm or angular 25 ±3 Nm

Step 2________Nm or angular 110 ±5°

- Timing gear plate, screw __________Nm 28 ±4 Nm

3. Measure the backlash between the camshaft and the idler gear.

4. Continue with the installation of the rocker arm shaft and injectors

5. Adjust the valves
