Clipped words refer to words formed by deleting one or more syllables from a larger
word or phrase without changing its meaning.
A word may be clipped or shortened by deleting either the beginning or end part.
Some clipped words are accepted in formal writing but others are not. One can infer or
decode the meaning of a clipped word if he/she knows its full form.
A B
mountain- mount telephone- phone
astronaut - astro alligator- gator
Which part of the words in A has been deleted? What part of the words in B
has been dropped?
When decoding the meaning of unfamiliar clipped word, look for context clues
that may be used in the sentence. These clues may be a synonym or antonym of that
clipped word.
Example: The principal issued a memo to serve as pupils’ reminder on bullying.
What is the unclipped form of the word memo? What does memo mean? How did you
know? What word in the sentence means memo? Reminder is a synonym of memo.

While most nouns form their plurals by adding –s or –es, a number of nouns
form their plurals in another way. It can happen in a variety of ways. This may include
changing its spelling. Nouns that do not simply add –s or –es in forming their plurals
are classified as irregular nouns.
When irregular nouns are used as subjects in sentences, make sure to still apply
the rule of subject-verb agreement: a singular subject must take a singular verb, and a
plural subject must take a plural verb. Below is an example.
A cactus grows in hot, dry places.
Cacti grow in hot, dry places.
Always remember these two important notes:

other than adding –s or –es.
2. When irregular nouns are used as subjects in sentences, the subject-
verb agreement rule must still be followed.

You have learned that adjectives are usually written before nouns that they describe
or modify. Sometimes there are two or more single-word adjectives to describe a noun.
These adjectives form a series. And this series of adjectives follows a certain pattern order:
number, quality, size, shape and color.
Read the paragraph below and learn how to write two or more adjectives before a
noun. Answer the questions that follows.
Mother is getting ready for the birthday of her pretty little daughter, Sonia. She will
buy Sonia a new yellow dress and will bake two big round brown cakes. Sonia’s mother will
also prepare five delicious dishes for visitors, classmates and friends.
Answers:
1. Pretty little Sonia will have a birthday party.
2. Mother will buy her a new yellow dress.
3. Mother will bake two big round brown cakes.
4. She will prepare five delicious dishes.
Notice the italicized adjectives. What does pretty tell? What does little mean?
Pretty tells about quality while little means size. Now look at the second answer. Two tells
number, new tells kind or quality, and yellow tells color.
How many adjectives are used in each sentence above? How are they arranged?
What kind of adjective come first? What comes next? Do the adjectives follow the pattern
below? See how they come in series.

Adverbs of degree tell us about the intensity or strength of something that happens
- an event or an action. It is usually placed before the adjective, verb or another adverb
that it modifies or describes although there are some exemptions. Remember also that
adverbs of degree or intensity answer the question HOW? It could be how much, how
great or how little.
Notice the following adverbs of degree or intensity used in the sentences plus the
word they modify like:
Too + hot - too (adverb) modifying the word hot
(adjective)
Almost + finish - almost (adverb) modifying the word finish (verb)
Very + very - very (adverb) modifying the word very
(another adverb)
Take note again that there are some exemptions to that rule or sentence structure;
that the adverb may not always come before the word they modify
Most commonly used expressions or words are: very, so, too, almost, much,
extremely, quite, fairly, wonderfully, etc.

As I woke up that early morning of Monday, I know it’s my birthday and I am pretty
sure that it will be a great day for me. I took my cellphone, read the messages of my
friends, made responses to them, then I laughed and smiled as I went on reading them. “I
am very happy today!”, I told myself. But there is still something that I want to happen. I
really want to talk to my Papa who is working abroad. I got my cellphone again then tried
to call him. Papa then received my call then we shared stories for almost an hour. But I
am quite disappointed because he had never promised me a gift. I hate my father very
much that day.
On the next day, he called back but I did not receive his call. So, he called my mother
then asked her why did I not respond to his call. “He’s very disappointed with you.”, my
mother told my father. Papa then asked Mama why and Mama explained. Then, I knew
something good will happen after my Mama talked to him. She called me then told me
that my Papa had promised to send me a gift. “It’s not too late to forgive son. Your Papa
was just busy yesterday that he forgot to tell you that he has something special for you on
your birthday”, Mama said. I felt so great then that day. I told myself that I should not
hate much Papa anymore for that simple thing.
