1. Introduction

The all new Honda Scoopy 2022 is one of the most sought after entry level urban city
motorcycle in Indonesia, especially in the greater Jakarta. This light bike is powered by a 4-stroke
109,5 cc SOHC engine and is driven by a V-belt. This particular Honda Scoopy 2022 is used to
commute to the campus & workshops every day for 4 hours.
1
The picture above is a V-Belt taken from the older Scoopy version, namely Scoopy Carburetor
KVY V-SUPER variant. This older version of Scoopy is powered by a slightly smaller engine – a
2-stroke 108 cc SOHC engine.
2
In this project, we are going to re-analyze if this older version V-belt is suitable for the all new
Honda Scoopy 2022. Also, we are going to design an upgraded version of this V-belt. It will
include the material, dimensions, and the type of belt. In addition to that, we are also going to
analyze the safety factors associated with the V-belt design.
2. Objective
a. To analyze the safety factor and number of strands for Scoopy Carburetor KVY V-
SUPER B110 V-Belt when fitted to the All New Honda Scoopy 2022 using a method
explained in Shigley’s textbook.
b. To re-design or upgrade the V-belt before to be fit for the desired design load.

1. Scoopy Carburetor KVY V-SUPER B110 V-Belt Analysis
a. Finding V (peripheral speed) of the belt
Peripheral speed of belt is governed by the following formula :
7
From the calculation, we get C = 7,862 in.
e. Calculating ϴ (Angle of Contact).
Angle of Contact can be calculated using the following formula :
f. Calculating exp(0,5123*ϴ).
9
By interpolation, solving for K1, we get K1 = 0,979.
i. Determining K2 (Belt-Length Correction Factor).
10
We get H allowable = 1,78 hp.
k. Determining nd (Design Factor).
Assuming the Scoopy is operated for light duty at 4 hours per day, we can assume
the design factor to be 1.
l. Determining Ks (Service Factor).
Assuming the Scoopy is under normal torque operation and uniform loading, we
can assume the design factor to be 1,2.
m. Calculating Hd (Design Power).
Design Power is governed by the following formula :
From table 17-2, we can see belt B type with small Sheave Pitch diameter of 6,2
in & large sheave diameter of 7,4 in, has a Htab of 3,94 hp at 3000 ft/min and
4,28 hp at 4000 ft/min – which are close to our requirement. Next, we are going to
12
analyze if this belt is eligible to sustain our design load. Also, we will calculate
the number of belt required to sustain this load as well as the safety factor.
b. Finding V (peripheral speed) of the belt
Peripheral speed of belt is governed by the following formula :
13
The calculation is shown below :
14
The Calculation is as follows :
g. Calculating exp(0,5123*ϴ).
15
Interpolating in Table 17-12 for V = 3246 ft/min and taking Sheave Pitch Diameter
as 6,2 in, we get Htab = 4,042 hp.
i. Determining K1 (Angle of Contact Correction Factor).
16
Solving for K2 for Type C Belt with 31,1024 of L, we get K2 = 0,85.
k. Calculating Ha (Allowable Power per Belt).
17
Assuming the Scoopy is under normal torque operation and uniform loading, we
can assume the design factor to be 1,2.
n. Calculating Hd (Design Power).
Design Power is governed by the following formula :
18
Until now, we have find Nb = 0,96, rounded to 1. This means that the Honda
Scoopy 2022 will need only 1 strand of V-Belt. This suits our requirements.
p. Determining Kb.
Kb can be determined by the following formula :
19
The calculation is shown below :
s. Calculating ΔF.
Delta F can be calculated by the formula below :
20
The calculation is shown below :
F2 = 19,534 lbf.
v. Calculating Fi (Initial Tension).
Initial Tension is calculated by using the formula below :
21
The calculation is as follows :
Wet get a factor of safety 1,037, which is larger than 1. Thus, this V-belt can
sustain the designed load.
x. Calculating T1
T1 can be calculated by using the following formula :
22
The calculation is as follows :
y. Calculating T2
T2 can be calculated by using the following formula :
23
For B belt, b = 10.926, K = 1193.
aa. Calculating Number of Passes (Np)
Number of Passes can be calculated using the following formula :
So, instead, we are going to calculate the lifetime (t) in hours in the next step.
bb. Calculating lifetime in hours (t)
Lifetime can be calculated by using the following formula :
24
The calculation is as follows :
This is in line with the theoretical catalog for B type V-belt tabulated in Table 17-17, in
which any B-type V-belt should have a minimum sheave diameter of 5 inch for a lifetime
between 10^8 to 10^9 force peaks. In our initial analysis, the B110 Scoopy Carburetor
KVY V-SUPER V-Belt only has a round 4.8 inch smaller sheave diameter, which is lower
than 5 in minimum. As we can observe in the calculation, this V-Belt needs a minimum of
2 strands to sustain the load in order to reach 10^8-10^9 force peaks or more of lifetime.
In contrast with that, our newly redesign V-belt for All New Honda Scoopy 2022 fulfills
the theoretical minimum 5 in sheave diameter specified by the table 17-17. As we can
observe, not only this V-belt can sustain the design load with a single strand, but also has
a lifetime exceeding the 10^9 bar – later we find the equivalent lifetime in hours exceeds
fourteen thousand hours.
25
6. Conclusion
Based on our analysis, a single strand of B110 Scoopy Carburetor KVY V-SUPER V-Belt taken
from the older version carbu Scoopy will not be able to sustain the design load for the All New
Honda Scoopy 2022. It will take a minimum of 2 strands of this V-belt to sustain the design load.
Building on that basis, we redesigned a new V-belt for the All New Honda Scoopy 2022. This
new belt has been analyzed in the section before and is fit for this designed load with a safety
factor of 1,037 and a lifetime of approximately 14 x 10^3 hours. The specification of this new V-
belt is as follows :
Description Symbol Unit Data
Smaller pulley/sheave diameter d in 6,2
Larger pulley/sheave diameter D in 7,4
Kevlar Aramid-Reinforced
Materials Rubber
Thickness b mm/in 8/0,315
Included Angle α deg 40
Belt Type B-type
Inner Circumference L mm/in 31,1024
Angle of Contact ϴ deg 177,8
Pitch Length in 32,9
Searching the existing belt in the stock market for the V-belt with above specification, we
recommend the following belt : BX31 by Browning @Gripnotch Belts. BX31 Belt has a slightly
shorter pitch length at about 32,8 inches.
