Basketball

Basketball was invented by Canadian physical education educator James Naismith in

Springfield, Massachusetts in 1891 as a less injury-prone sport than football. When Naismith
devised the indoor sport to keep sportsmen indoors during the winters, he was a 31-year-old
doctoral student. The game took off fast and expanded in popularity as the twentieth century
proceeded, first in America and then across the world. Basketball became a professional sport
once it got established in American colleges. The National Basketball Association (NBA), which
was founded in 1946, developed to be a multibillion-dollar business by the turn of the century,
and basketball became ingrained in American society.
Each team consists of 12 players, with only 5 on the court at any given time. Point guard,
defensive guard, center, offensive forward, and defensive forward are the positions. Basketball
players have three different score figures. Any basket made outside the three-point arc is worth
three points. Two points will be awarded for baskets made within the three-point arc. Each
successful free throw will result in one point being awarded. The amount of free throws
awarded is determined on the location of the foul.
The goal of basketball is to score points by throwing the ball (basketball) into a hoop. The game
is played on a rectangular court, and the number of points scored is determined by where
portion of the court you successfully toss the ball into the basket. Dribbling or passing the ball
can be used to move it around. The side with the most points at the end of the game is named
the winner.
