Solid Edge Users

Installing Solid Edge
Installing Solid Edge is simple and straightforward. Using the Windows Installer
program, Solid Edge Setup steps you through the installation process.

To install Solid Edge, use any of the following methods:

• Insert the Solid Edge CD-ROM in the CD drive. If autorun is enabled, Solid
Edge setup begins.
• Run the Setup.exe program from Windows Explorer by double-clicking the file
<CD drive>:\setup.exe.
• Open the file <CD drive>:\setup.exe using the Run command on the Start menu.
Follow the instructions provided by the Windows Installer. Click Back to return to
previous steps. Click Cancel to cancel the setup process.

Configuring Custom Setup

The Windows Installer includes this step, during which you can install Solid Edge
add-ins and configure system defaults.

3
Solid Edge Setup and Configuration

To install an add-in, click the button next to the name of the add-in and choose to
install it. To install all add-ins, click the button next to Solid Edge Add-ins and
choose to install all add-ins.

The template files determine the default units of measurement in Solid Edge files.
To use English units, select English Template Files. To use metric units, select
Metric Template Files. If you select neither English nor metric, or you select both
English and metric, the metric templates are used.

Dos and Don'ts

• For information on addressing error messages you may encounter while
installing Solid Edge, contact customer support.
• You must load and remove Solid Edge from an account that has Administrator
privileges. Solid Edge will run under User, Administrator, or Guest privileges.
• Solid Edge always installs system files on the drive where your operating system
resides, regardless of the <DRIVE>:\Directory you specify for your product
installation.

System Requirements
Minimum System Configuration
• Intel Pentium or AMD Athlon processor-based PC
• Windows XP, Windows NT® 4.0 Service Pack 6 or later, Windows® 2000, or
Windows ME
• 128 MB RAM
• 500 MB of disk space for installation
• Minimum Resolution: 1,024x768, 65K colors
• CD-ROM (local or network) for installation

Recommended System Configuration

• Windows 2000, Pentium III or Pentium 4 or AMD Athlon, 512 MB or more
RAM, OpenGL accelerator with 65K colors.

Tips for Installing Solid Edge

Windows supports autorun, so inserting the CD-ROM automatically starts the Solid
Edge setup. If you do not want to run Setup, hold SHIFT while inserting the CD-
ROM to disable autorun. You can then directly access data on the CD-ROM through
Windows Explorer.

4
Solid Edge Setup and Configuration

As you install Solid Edge, Setup will check to see if Solid Edge has already been
installed on your system and will display message boxes prompting you to specify
how Setup is to proceed. You have the following options:

• Modify the existing installation of Solid Edge. Choose this option to install or
uninstall template files or add-ins.
• Repair the existing installation of Solid Edge. Choose this option to repair
problems like missing files and invalid shortcuts.
• Remove the existing installation of Solid Edge. Choose this option to remove
Solid Edge from the computer.

Silent Installation
You can silently install Solid Edge with the following command:

msiexec /i “path\solid edge V12.msi” /QN+ INSTALLDIR=”D:\Program Files\Solid

Edge V12” USERNAME=”Winston Smith” COMPANYNAME=”MOT”

• The /i argument initiates the installation.

• The /QN+ installs Solid Edge with no user interface. The + in this argument
provides a confirmation dialog box after successful installation. (Omit this
option to install with a user interface.)
• INSTALLDIR specifies the directory in which to install Solid Edge.
• USERNAME specifies your user name.
• COMPANYNAME specifies your company.

Uninstalling Solid Edge

Use the Add/Remove Programs utility (located in the operating system Control
Panel) to remove Solid Edge. Select Solid Edge from the list of installed products,
and click Remove.

Note For more information on installation and uninstallation of Solid Edge and
product enhancements, see the readme.txt file in the product directory.

License Administrators
Solid Edge Licensing Options
Solid Edge provides a flexible licensing system so you can make the most efficient
use of your software licenses. When you purchase the software, you choose between
two options: node-locked (a license that is locked to a specific hardware key) or
floating (a license that can be used by anyone on the network. Floating licenses are
managed by FLEXlm; a system administrator typically configures the dongle-
equipped license server).

Dongles
A hardware key, or dongle, is a small device that plugs into your computer and
works with the software to provide licensing. The dongle plugs into the parallel port
on the back of your computer. You can continue to use the parallel port by plugging
another parallel device (a printer, for example) into the rear of the dongle.

With node-locked licensing, if your license requires a

dongle, it must be installed on your computer. With
floating licensing, the license server must have a server
dongle installed.

Node-locked (Standalone)
If your license requires a dongle, install it on the parallel
port of your computer. The Solid Edge License Wizard
validates the dongle that is included in your Solid Edge
kit.

Floating
Floating represents the ability to have multiple clients
accessing the software through a license server. This
means that you can install Solid Edge on as many
computers as needed on your network, and then have users check out licenses from a
pool, not to exceed the total number of purchased seats.

The license server can be any computer on your network that is running a 32-bit
Windows operating system. The only limitation is that the machine selected as the
server must be available for the users to access whenever needed. The license file
used in a floating configuration establishes the location of the license server and the
number of available licenses. The license server must have a server dongle installed.
The FLEXlm utilities that are necessary to simplify the process and to make full use
of your Solid Edge license are delivered on your Solid Edge product CD.

Note Floating licenses cannot be shared across country borders. It is strongly

recommended that the floating licenses only be shared across a single LAN to
minimize any additional points of network interruption.

7
Solid Edge Setup and Configuration

License File
Both the Node-locked and Floating options require a license file that is customized
to your installation. The license file information required to validate your license is
on a yellow sheet of paper included with the packing list that accompanies your
shipment.

Temporary Licensing
Temporary standalone licensing is available in a situation where Solid Edge will not
run because of problems with the current license file or hardware key. A temporary
license key is typically valid for 30 days. In the United States or Canada, contact
support at 1-800-955-0000 to request a temporary license. Outside the United States
and Canada, contact your Solid Edge reseller.

Web Retrieval
You can retrieve current licenses on the Web at http://support.ugs.com/.

Configuring Floating Licensing

Configuring floating licenses involves identifying a license server, installing and
configuring FLEXlm, and installing Solid Edge.

Identifying a License Server

The license server is the computer on your network on which the FLEXlm software
will reside. The license server can be any computer on your network that is running a
32-bit Windows operating system. The server and the client machines must be
running the TCP/IP protocol and must be able to communicate with the server over
the network. The license server must have the provided server dongle installed for
floating licensing to work.

It is not necessary to install Solid Edge on the license server. However, you must
install the Sentinel drivers, available in the Sentinel directory on the Solid Edge CD,
on the license server. Sentinel documentation is also available in this directory.

Note The Sentinel file setup.exe has been renamed sentinel.exe on your Solid Edge
CD. Therefore, when you read the Sentinel documentation, substitute sentinel.exe
for setup.exe.

Installing and Configuring FLEXlm

The FLEXlm software is included on your Solid Edge product CD. You need to
install the FLEXlm software on your licensing server. To install and configure
FLEXlm, log in with administrative privileges and follow these steps:

1. Run <CD-ROM>:\ResKit\License Manager\setup.exe, where <CD-ROM> is the

drive letter of the CD-ROM drive. Follow the installation prompts. If Solid Edge
is not installed on the licensing server, install the drivers from the ResKit
directory.

2. Copy your license file (SElicense.dat) to the <DRIVE>:\SEFlex\Program

directory, where <DRIVE> is the drive letter of the hard drive where you
installed FLEXlm.

3. Double-click lmtools.exe in the <DRIVE>:\SEFlex\Program directory to display

the LMTOOLS dialog box.

4. On the Service/License File tab, specify Configuration Using Services. Ensure

that FLEXlm License Manager is highlighted in the
list.

5. On the Configure Services tab, specify the location of the License Manager
daemon (a process that runs in the background on your computer, sometimes
referred to as a service), lmgrd.exe, and the Solid Edge License File,
SElicense.dat. Also specify a location for the debug log file.

9
Solid Edge Setup and Configuration

6. Select the Use Services and Start Server at Power Up

options.

7. Click Save Service. If prompted to save the FLEXlm settings, click Yes.

8. On the Start/Stop/Reread tab, click Start Server to start licensing.
