Abortion
Abortion
Janeth M. Fustamante
Abstract
Abortion is a medical procedure that terminates pregnancy. Many people are in favor of
abortion, while others do not approve of this idea. The purpose of this essay is to
explain the reasons why people are for or against voluntary abortion. People who are in
favor of voluntary abortion believe that criminalizing abortion affects and violates the
fundamental human rights of pregnant women. While people who are against elective
abortion believe that no woman has the right to kill a life, it doesn't matter if that life
lives inside you, you are simply not morally authorized to do so. In conclusion,
voluntary abortion is a topic that continues to be talked about to this day. This fact
affects both the people involved in the issue and the environment of the pregnant
woman, but this is not an impediment for third parties to give their opinion regarding
the issue, whether they are for or against it.
People who are in favor of voluntary abortion believe that criminalizing abortion
affects and violates the fundamental human rights of pregnant women. They also believe that
this criminalization of this topic induces women to resort to unsafe and risky methods for their
lives and health (NHS website, 2021). Sometimes, this method is not highly effective, so they
endanger both the life of the woman and the baby. Resorting to these methods causes an
increase in the mortality of women due to unsafe and risky abortions. This figure has increased
over time because in many countries voluntary abortion is punishable. This penalty, in addition
to validating a millionaire and clandestine market that profits from the autonomy of women,
also has a negative impact on access to legal abortions due to medical problems that threaten
the life of the pregnant woman.
People who are against elective abortion believe that "terminating a pregnancy" is not
the correct term for such an action because "interrupting" is basically stopping the
continuation of an action and then resuming it. Therefore, a better term would be to stop,
liquidate, sacrifice or remove a pregnancy. They also believe that it is not a voluntary
interruption, since 75% of women interrupt their pregnancy due to pressure from their family,
their partner, society or their environment (Amnesty International, 2022). This fact is
considered by people who are against abortion as non-solidarity, since solidarity is
synonymous with support, support or help, and abortion is the opposite of it. People who are
against abortion believe that no woman has the right to kill a life, it doesn't matter if that life
lives inside you, you are simply not morally authorized to do so.
Conclusion
To sum up, voluntary abortion is a topic that continues to be talked about until today.
This fact affects both the people involved in the issue and the environment of the pregnant
woman, but this is not an impediment for third parties to give their opinion regarding the
issue, whether they are in favor or against it. The different reasons why people are for or
against abortion are mostly based on the different circumstances experienced, their own
beliefs or beliefs instilled by other people. So everyone has a different point of view than you,
no matter if it's a person from your family or a random person on the street.
