YOUR ASSIGNMENT: Dog Park

You are helping to plan a new dog park on a lot. Which lot did you choose? (Circle One)
With the lot you have chosen, your goal is to construct the largest possible dog park that meets

the code restrictions.

Making Sense of the Problem

What do you know about Lot B is 250 ft wide and 275 ft long. The codes:
the lot size and code
requirements? There must be a 4 ft sidewalk around the entire park.

One end must be for a parking lot that is at least 20 ft wide

A small creek runs along the Birch Street side of the lot.
Nothing can be built within 15 ft of the creek (not even the
sidewalk).

The dog park must be a parallelogram.

What do you want to find The area of the largest dog park you can build on the empty
out? lot.

What kind of answer do A positive number for the length and width of the project,
you expect? measured in ft, and a positive number for the area, measured
in square ft.

Below is a map of the town:

1. Look at the theater on First Ave, between Alder and Birch. If the corners of the theater are all

right angles, is the theater a parallelogram? Why or why not? (2 points)

Yes, this theater is a parallelogram because the opposite interior angles are congruent. The
theater is also a rectangle, which is a type of parallelogram.

2. Look at the school on Second Ave, between Dogwood and Elm.

a) Is the school a quadrilateral? Why or why not? (1 point)

Yes, the school is a quad because it has four sides.

b) Is the school a parallelogram? Why or why not? (1 point)

No, the school is not a parallelogram because a pair of opposite sides (along Second Ave. and
Thrid Ave.) are not congruent.

Planning your dog park:

3. Draw a picture that represents what you know about the empty lot. (2 points)

Yes, it’s a parallelogram because both sets of opposite sides are congruent.

5. Where are you going to put the parking lot? Draw the parking lot on your map and label its

dimensions. (2 points)

Solving the Problem:

9. What are the final dimensions of the largest dog park you can create on your lot (not including

the sidewalk or the parking lot)? Use the Quadrilateral Tool located in the activity to help you. (2

points)

Length:

275 ft.
-15 ft for creek
-20 ft for parking lot
-8 ft for the sidewalk
= 232 ft. along Second Ave. and Third Ave.

Width:
-8 ft for the sidewalks
=242 ft. along Birch and Cherry Streets.

Final Dimensions: 232 ft. by 242 ft.

10. Most importantly, to satisfy the mayor, is this space a parallelogram? Why or why not? (1

point)
Yes, it's a parallelogram because both sets of opposite sides are congruent.

11. Draw a sketch of your dog park. Correctly label the dimensions that prove your dog park is a

parallelogram. (2 points)
