There are words used for a specific situation. There are words that we use outside

make sure that the words we use are appropriate to the given situation and place as well.

Let’s Recall (Review)

Direction: True or False

parents.
______________ 2. Formal style in speech requires only a gymnasium or AVR.
______________ 3. Frozen speech style can be changed monthly
______________ 4. We use formal words when we consult a receptionist in a hotel..
______________ 5. We can express ourselves better outside if we use casual style of
speech.

Let’s Understand (Study the Concept)

TYPES OF SPEECH STYLE

INTIMATE – This style is common among members of the family. Private

conversations mostly occur inside their homes. Intimacy is considered in this situation.

CASUAL – this style is common among friends, peers and colleagues. They can use
jargons that only their group can understand. The vernacular language is used since they
understand each other. It can be done publicly.

CONSULTATIVE – this style takes place in situation where a person is seeking

information about matters which is the expertise of the person they are talking to. This style
is more professional compared to other speech styles.

FORMAL – this style is used in formal gatherings. The speaker is the center and the
source of information. The speaker delivers the message to a large crowd in a more formal
way.

FROZEN - this style applies to sentences which were used constantly and
unchanged in a long period of time.

Let’s Apply

Direction: Identify if the following situations dictate intimate, casual, consultative, formal or
frozen style of speech.

1. giving last minute instructions to basketball players

2. delivering an advocacy speech
3. talking to a guidance counselor
4. reading revised school policies
5. having a one-on-one conversation with a loved one
Let’s Analyze

Alyanna and Althea are best friends. They are always together and keep on
talking about the day to day events in their lives in school. The only problem that
their peers see with is that they used to whisper at each other even if they are in
front of their classmates and even teachers.

.
In the scenario written above, do Alyanna and Althea both used casual and intimate
style of speech? Is it appropriate to whisper in front of people? When should we use casual
and intimate styles?
