Personal statement

I am highly motivated and hardworking individual; I have finished my first year at study as an undergraduate
Environmental Science student at the University of Plymouth and currently in my second year. With a range of
key skills developed from both my time on the course along with previous experiences such as taking part of
the National Citizen Service (NCS) and my time as an Explorer Scout.

Previous experience

Institute of Environmental Sciences Student Ambassador (2022-present): Communicating between the IES
and the student body of the university, event planning and organisation to inspire student action relating to
environmental opportunities

The Shine Group (2020): Taking initiative during periods of little workflow, adapting to different working
environments depending on where I was placed

Lab technician placement (2019): Setting up practical equipment, preparation of solutions, maintenance,
logging/organisation of documents and construction of lab equipment

National Citizen Service (2018): Worked with a group to run a charity even concert for Larkrise Special School.
I was one of the people in charge of health and safety for the event, my role included duties such as involving
creating risks assessments, liaising with Wiltshire Council officials, and setting up electrical equipment
Key Skills

• Good communication skills, both written and verbal:


Communicated scientific ideas in a clear effective manner (both in presentations and written reports)
Acting as a liaison between the Institute of Environmental Science and the student body of my
university
Exchanging new environmental ideas at people’s assembly on climate action, growing all our
understanding and knowledge about climate justice

• Project management skills in a leadership position and co-operating with peers:


Leadership role in group presentation assessment in “Environmental pollution” module
Creating shared resources to distribute amongst the group such as organising our collected data on
Excel to produce effective graphs
Schedule with my group to organise times to meet up and discuss the project along with ensuring the
work would be completed by the set deadlines

• IT Skills:
Use of Excel and Minitab to impute and analysis data using relevant statistical tests
QGIS to produce maps presenting geographical information about sites of where fieldwork was carried
out
Proficient in Microsoft Office to produce written reports and power point presentations

• Flexibility and resilience:


Adapting to changing conditions in the field when collecting data
Re-running tests in a lab when erroring has been identified in the results
Changing plans to fit others schedules and/or the current workflow

Field work experience: Developed key data gathering and analysis techniques (both descriptive and inferential),
such as identifying different species of fauna across Dartmoor and using suitable statistical tests on the data

Laboratory skills: including visual analysis of water samples to identify types of micro plastics it contained and
measuring parameters such as pH, O2 content and conductivity. Adhering to the strict structure of the work to
ensure good safety and hygiene was being upheld

Hobbies & Interests

Explorer Scouts: Ran evenings of activities for the Scouts, assisting the leaders, working alongside people of
various ages, planning and then partaking in hikes
Podcast: Took part in running a podcast during the lockdown period, engaging in critical thinking and analysis
about the groups chosen piece of media of that week, researching and exploring the work and considering any
possible subtexts it contains
Tabletop modules: Running a co-operative, team based, problem solving sessions with friends that span
several hours, involves presenting a scenario for the group to solve within parameters. I have run shorter
sessions during my time in school, serving a position of a club leader
