Exercise – M-N Interaction Diagram for a Non-Symmetrical Section

1. For the section shown in Figure 1 of a reinforced concrete member,

a) construct the interaction diagram M-N, if fyk=500 N/mm2, fck=25

N/mm2, b = 250 mm, d’ = 50 mm, d = 400mm, h = 450 mm, As =
1500 mm2 and As’ = 300 mm2. The bending causes maximum
compression on the face adjacent to the steel As’.

b) From your interaction diagram, M-N, report the bending moment

capacity, Mo, of the above section if no axial load is applied to the
column (i.e., you do not have to do extra calculations).

Exercise – Shear at the Ultimate Limit State Design

2. Figure 2 shows a reinforced concrete beam simply supported on 250 mm

wide supports A and B. The beam has a rectangular cross section of
width, b, equal to 200 mm and the depth of the bottom reinforcement, d,
from the upper edge is equal to 400 mm. The beam supports a uniformly
distributed permanent action (including its self-weight) of 30 kN/m and a
uniformly distributed variable action of 20 kN/m. The characteristic
material strengths of the beam are fck= 25 N/mm2 for concrete and fyk =
500 N/mm2 for the steel.

a) Calculate the shear forces and bending moments using ultimate

limit state design. Provide the shearing-force and bending-moment
diagrams.

b) Check if the shear reinforcement in the form of the vertical links

shown can support, in shear, the given ultimate load.

c) If the shear reinforcement in the form of the vertical links shown

cannot support, in shear, the given ultimate load, propose a new
shear reinforcement design to support, in shear, the given ultimate
load.
