CEE 351 – Reinforced Concrete I

Fall 2022
Homework Assignement 1
Distributed: Wednesday, October 19th 2022
Due: Wednesday, November 2nd 2022 at 08:30 on Moodle

1. Exercise on Shrinkage

The response of the concrete material used for the construction of a

reinforced concrete member is given in Figure 1. The tensile response of the
steel reinforcement used in the aforementioned member is provided in Figure
2. The free shrinkage of concrete, εcs, is equal to 200x10-6.

Homework Assignment 1

a) Calculate the stress developed in the reinforcement to cause tensile stress

in concrete equal to 0.4 N/mm2 due to shrinkage of the reinforced concrete
member.

b) In (a), calculate the percentage reinforcement required to cause tensile

stress in concrete equal to 0.4 N/mm2 due to shrinkage of the reinforced
concrete member.

c) What would be the stresses developed in concrete and in the steel

reinforcement if the area of reinforcement is tripled?

2. Exercise on Thermal Shrinkage

For the reinforced concrete member presented in Exercise 1, the thermal

coefficients of concrete and steel are equal to αT,c=αT,s= 10 x 10-6 per oC.

a) Calculate the stresses developed in concrete and the reinforcing steel

caused by a temperature drop equal to 5 oC.

b) Calculate the fall in temperature to cause cracking in concrete. Report the

assumptions you have made (if any).

3. Exercise on Limit State Design - Combination of Actions

For the residential building shown in Figure 3, provide schematic

representations of the combination of actions with the corresponding factors
that need to be considered when checking the stability of the building for
overturning:
a) about A,
b) about B.
It is noted that the only permanent action applied to the building, is the action
due to its own weight.
For each case explain the selection of factors.

4. Exercise on Limit State Design - Serviceability Limit State

A reinforced concrete beam forms part of a building used as an office area.

The beam is designed to carry 2(two) permanent loads equal to 5 kN/m and
10 kN/m, a leading variable load equal to 5 kN/m and 2(two) accompanying
variable loads equal to 14 kN/m and 18kN/m.
Calculate the serviceability limit sate design values, namely:
a) Combination design value.
b) Frequent design value.
c) Quasi-permanent design value.

5. Exercise on Limit State Design - Ultimate Limit State Design

Figure 4 shows a reinforced concrete beam supported at A and B. The beam

has a rectangular cross section of height, h, equal to 50 cm and width, b,
equal to 25 cm. The beam supports a uniformly distributed permanent action
(excluding its self-weight) of 10 kN/m and a uniformly distributed variable
action of 7 kN/m. Assuming that the weight of the reinforced concrete is equal
to 25 kN/m3, calculate the shear forces and bending moments using ultimate
limit state design. Provide the shearing-force and bending-moment diagrams.
