Conversion of Unit of Measurements

The English System of Measurement was widely used until the 1800s
and the 1900s when the Metric System of Measurement started to gain
ground and become the most used system of measurement worldwide.
The older generation of Filipinos is more comfortable with English
System rather than the Metric System although the Philippines have already
adopted the Metric System as its official system of measurement.

Steps in the Conversion of Units

1. Identify the unit you are starting with.
2. Identify the unit you want to end with.
3. Find the conversion factor/s that will convert the starting unit to ending
unit. Using the fractional form, the unit you want to end will be the
numerator the unit to be cancelled will be the denominator.
4. Set up the Mathematical expression so that all units except the unit you
want to end with, will not be cancelled.

5
Conversion of English Unit of Measurement to English Unit of Measurement
Example A. Convert 36 inches to feet.
Step1:
inches
Identify the unit you are starting with.
Step2: feet
Identify the unit you want to end with.
Step 3:
Find the conversion factor/s that will
convert the starting unit to the ending
unit.
1 foot
12inches
Using the fractional form, the unit you
want to end will be the numerator. The
unit to be cancelled will be the
denominator.

Step 4: Set up Mathematical expression

so that all units except the unit you want 36 inches x 1 foot = 3 feet
12inches
to end with, will not be cancelled.

Step 5: Final answer 3 feet

Therefore, 36 in = 3 feet

Example B. Convert 2 miles to inches.

Step 1:
miles
Identify the unit you are starting with.
Step 2:

Step 3:
Find the conversion factor/s that will
convert the starting unit to the ending 5280 feet
unit. 1 mile

Using the fractional form, the unit you 12inches

want to end will be the numerator. The 1 foot
unit to be cancelled will be the
denominator.

Step 4: Set up Mathematical expression

6
5280 feet 12inches
2 miles x x =
so that all units except the unit you want 1 mile 1 foot
to end with, will not be cancelled. 2 x 5280 x 12
= 126,720 in.
1x 1
Step 5: Final answer 126,720 in.
Therefore, 2 miles = 126,720 in.

Example C. Convert 9 ft. to meters.

Step 1:
Identify the unit you are starting with. feet
Step 2:
Identify the unit you want to end with. meters
Step 3:
Find the conversion factor/s that will
convert the starting unit to the ending 1 yard
unit. 3 feet

Using the fractional form, the unit you 0.9 m

1 yard
want to end will be the numerator. The
unit to be cancelled will be the
denominator.

Step 4: Set up Mathematical expression

1 yard 0.9 m
so that all units except the unit you want 9 feet x x = 2.7 m
3 feet 1 yard
to end with, will not be cancelled.

Step 5: Final answer 2.7 m

Therefore, 9 feet = 2.7 m

Nowadays the use of a metric system of measurements is

recommended because computations are easier in this system for it uses the
power of ten. There are prefixes that describe each power of ten. Here are the
prefixes used for the based unit for length, mass, volume, and other
measurements (Metric System).

Conversion of Unit of Measure

To change from one metric unit to another, we multiply or divide by ten.

Unit of Length (Meter)

10 mm = 1 cm

10 cm = 1 dm

10 dm = 1 m

10 m =1 dam

10 dkm =1 hm

10 hm =1km

We can also make a converter diagram to simplify the changing of

units of length as shown below.

8
Converter diagram for length

Note:
1. Multiply when changing from a larger unit to a smaller unit.
2. Divide when changing from a smaller unit to a larger unit.

Example A. Convert 5.43 meters to centimeters

Method 1: Method 2:
Using Metric Converter Using the Conversion Factor

In converting meter to centimeter we 100 cm

Conversion factor:
1m
will move two units to the right.
Solution:
100 cm
km dm cm 5.43 m x = 543 cm
1m
So in 5.43, we will move the decimal
point two places to the right.
Now,
5.43 m = 5 .4 3. = 543 cm

Therefore, 5.43 m = 543 cm

Example B. Convert 6500 meters to kilometers.

Method 1: Method 2:

9
Using Metric Converter Using the Conversion Factor
In converting meter to
kilometer we will move three units to 1 km
Conversion factor:
1000 m
the left.
Solution:
km hm dam m
1 km
6500 m x = 6.5 km
1000 m
So in 6500, we will move the
decimal point three places to the left.
Now,
6500 m = 6 .5 0 0 . = 6.5
km

Therefore, 6,500 m = 6.5 km

4 Time and Temperature

Time and temperature are important in our daily lives. The hotness and
the coldness depend on the time of the day. During early morning and
evening, we can feel its coldness and during noon time we can feel the
increase in its temperature. In the Philippines, we have two seasons every
year. The dry season (summer) reaches up to 45 – 47 °C temperature while
the wet season (rainy) drops its average temperature up to 20°C.

16
Guide questions:

1. Is time indicated in the picture?

2. How about the temperature?

What is It

Measurement of Time
Time is measured by the rotation of the Earth on its axis which is
equivalent to a whole day and the revolution of the earth around the sun
which is equivalent to one year or 365 ¼ days. Every four years, a day is
added to account for the ¼ day in excess each year. Such a year with 29
days in February is called a leap year.

The Units Used to Measure Time with Their Corresponding

Equivalent Factor
60 s = 1 min. 365 days = 1 yr.
60 min. = 1 hr. 366 days = 1 leap yr.
24 hrs. = 1 day 10 yrs. = 1 decade
7 days = 1 week 20 yrs. = 1 score
4 weeks = 1 mo. 100 yrs. = 1 century
12 mos. = 1 yr. 1000 yrs. = 1 millennium

Unit Fraction is a fraction where the numerator and the denominator have
different units and the value is always equal to 1.

Examples
24 hrs . 1 day 1min . 60 s 1 ft . 12∈. 1 yd . 36∈.
∨ ; ∨ ; ∨ ; ∨
1 day 24 hrs . 60 s 1 min. 12∈. 1 ft . 36∈. 1 yd .

17
When we multiply fractions and there are the same units in the numerator and
denominator, we always get a value equal to 1 and we use the term “cancel
out” to simplify our answer as shown below:
24 hrs . Notice that there is a unit common
2 days ×
1 day
to both numbers which is “days”
24 hrs . Multiply 2 and 24 and cancel out
2 days ×
1 day
“day” as a unit then use the
remaining units in the given which
is hrs.
2 x 24 hrs .=48 hrs . Answer

To understand more about conversion, study the examples below.

Example How many seconds are there in 1 day?
Step 1:
day
Identify the unit you are starting with.
Step 2:
Identify the unit you want to end with. seconds
Step 3:
Find the conversion factor/s that will 24 hours
convert the starting unit to the ending 1 day
unit.
60 min
1 hour
Using the fractional form the unit you
want to end will be the numerator the 60 seconds
unit to be cancelled will be the 1 min
denominator.

Step 4: Set up mathematical expression 24 hours 60 min

1 day x x x
so that all units except the unit you want 1 day 1 hour
to end with, will not be cancelled. 60 seconds
= 86,400 seconds
1 min

Step 5: Final answer 86,400 seconds

Therefore, 1 day = 86,400 seconds

Measures of Temperature

Temperature is the measurement of the degree of hotness or

coldness of an object or substance. It commonly uses the units of Celsius
(°C) for the Metric System and Fahrenheit (°F) for the English system. The
base SI unit for temperature is Kelvin (K). Unlike Celsius and Fahrenheit
which are considered degrees, Kelvin is considered as an absolute unit of
measurement and therefore can be worked on algebraically. Here are some
conversion factors.

Conversion Formula for Temperature

9
°F = °C + 32.
5
5
°C = (°F – 32).
9

K = °C + 273.15

Example A. Convert 27°C to degree Fahrenheit

Step 1:
°C
Identify the unit you are starting with.
Step 2:
Identify the unit you want to end with. degree Fahrenheit
Step 3: 9
°F = °C + 32
Find the conversion factor/s or formula 5

Step 4: Set up Mathematical expression 9

°F = (27) + 32
so that all units except the unit you want 5
to end with, will not be cancelled. = 48.6 + 32
°F = 80.6 or 80.6°F
Step 5: Final answer °F = 80.6 or 80.6°F

Therefore, 27°C = 80.6°F

19
Example B. Convert 95°F to degree Celsius.
Step 1:
°F
Identify the unit you are starting with.
Step 2:
Identify the unit you want to end with. degree Celsius
Step 3: 5
°C = (°F – 32)
Find the conversion factor/s or formula 9
5
°C = (95 – 32)
Step 4: Set up mathematical expression 9
so that all units except the unit you want 5
°C = (63)
to end with, will not be cancelled. 9
°C = 35 or 35°C
Step 5: Final answer °C = 35 or 35°C

Therefore, 95°F= 35°C

Example C. Convert 14°F to K.

Step 1:
°F
Identify the unit you are starting with.
Step 2:
Identify the unit you want to end with. K
Step 3: 5
°C = (°F – 32)
Find the conversion factor/s or formula 9
K = °C + 273.15
Since there is no conversion
from °F to K, we will convert first
°F to °C, then to K.
Solution:
°F to °C
5
Step 4: Set up Mathematical expression °C = (°F – 32)
9
so that all units except the unit you want 5
= (14° – 32)
to end with, will not be cancelled. 9
°C = - 10
°C to K
K = °C + 273.15
= -10 °+ 273.15
K = 263.15°

20
Step 5: Final answer K = 263.15°
Therefore, 14°F = 263.15°
