This module will help you and guide you on how to convert one unit of
measurement to another unit. It will also help you to master the conversion of
the English System of measurement to the Metric System of Measurement or
vice versa. And its application to real-life situations.

Directions: Choose the letter of your answer. Write it on your
answer sheet.
1. How many decimeters are there in a dekameter?
A. 10 B. 100 C. 1000 D. 10000
2
Conversion of Unit of Measurements
The English System of Measurement was widely used until the 1800s
and the 1900s when the Metric System of Measurement started to gain
ground and become the most used system of measurement worldwide.
The older generation of Filipinos is more comfortable with English
System rather than the Metric System although the Philippines have already
adopted the Metric System as its official system of measurement.

English Measurements to English Measurements
1 foot = 12 inches (in.)
1 foot = 0.333 yards (yd.)
1 yard = 36 in.
1 mile (mi.) = 5280 feet
5
Conversion of English Unit of Measurement to English Unit of Measurement
Example A. Convert 36 inches to feet.
Step1:
inches
Identify the unit you are starting with.
Step2: feet
Identify the unit you want to end with.
Step 3:
Find the conversion factor/s that will
convert the starting unit to the ending
unit.
1 foot
12inches
Using the fractional form, the unit you
want to end will be the numerator. The
unit to be cancelled will be the
denominator.
6
5280 feet 12inches
2 miles x x =
so that all units except the unit you want 1 mile 1 foot
to end with, will not be cancelled. 2 x 5280 x 12
= 126,720 in.
1x 1
Step 5: Final answer 126,720 in.
Therefore, 2 miles = 126,720 in.

Using Metric Converter Using the Conversion Factor
In converting meter to
kilometer we will move three units to 1 km
Conversion factor:
1000 m
the left.
Solution:
km hm dam m
1 km
6500 m x = 6.5 km
1000 m
So in 6500, we will move the
decimal point three places to the left.
Now,
6500 m = 6 .5 0 0 . = 6.5
km

2 for Mass (Weight)
What’s New
A peso coin weighs 5 grams. Determine how much money you would
have if you had a kilogram of 1-peso coin?
What Is It
In this lesson, you will become familiar with the conversion of a unit of
mass.
The table below summarizes the units related to mass/weight and its
equivalents.
Unit of mass/weight Symbols Equivalent
mass/weight
10 milligrams mg 1 centigram
10 centigram cg 1 decigram
10 decigrams dg 1 gram
10 grams g 1 dekagram
10 dekagram dag 1 hectogram
10 hectogram hg 1 kilogram (kg)
11
Example A. Convert 350 g to kilogram.
Method 1: Method 2:
Using Metric Converter Using the Conversion Factor
In converting g to kg we will move
three units to the left. 1 kg
Conversion factor:
1000 g
kg hg dag g
Solution:
1 kg
So in 350, we will move the decimal 350 g x = 0.35 kg
1000 g
point three places to the left.
Now,
350 g =.3 50 . = 0.35 kg
Therefore, 48 hg = 480,000 cg
12
What’s More
1. 834 cg = 8.34 g
2. 5 g = ____ mg
3. 875 mg = ____ g

Example B. Convert 26 liters to centiliter.
Method 1: Method 2:
Using Metric Converter Using the Conversion Factor
In converting hg to cg we will move
two units to the right. 100 cl
Conversion factor:
1l
Solution:
l dl cl
100 cl
So in 26, we will move the decimal 26 l x = 2600 cl
1l
point two places to the right.
Now,
26 l = 2 6 .0 0. = 2600 cl
Therefore, 26 l = 2,600 cl
What’s More
Let’s Do It This Way: Convert the following to its indicated unit. Write the
answer in your answer sheet. Number 1 is done for you.
1. 0.35 kl = 350, 000 mL
2. 350 L =_______ hL
3. 500 dl =_______mL

4 Time and Temperature
Time and temperature are important in our daily lives. The hotness and
the coldness depend on the time of the day. During early morning and
evening, we can feel its coldness and during noon time we can feel the
increase in its temperature. In the Philippines, we have two seasons every
year. The dry season (summer) reaches up to 45 – 47 °C temperature while
the wet season (rainy) drops its average temperature up to 20°C.

What is It
Measurement of Time
Time is measured by the rotation of the Earth on its axis which is
equivalent to a whole day and the revolution of the earth around the sun
which is equivalent to one year or 365 ¼ days. Every four years, a day is
added to account for the ¼ day in excess each year. Such a year with 29
days in February is called a leap year.
Unit Fraction is a fraction where the numerator and the denominator have
different units and the value is always equal to 1.
Examples
24 hrs . 1 day 1min . 60 s 1 ft . 12∈. 1 yd . 36∈.
∨ ; ∨ ; ∨ ; ∨
1 day 24 hrs . 60 s 1 min. 12∈. 1 ft . 36∈. 1 yd .
17
When we multiply fractions and there are the same units in the numerator and
denominator, we always get a value equal to 1 and we use the term “cancel
out” to simplify our answer as shown below:
24 hrs . Notice that there is a unit common
2 days ×
1 day
to both numbers which is “days”
24 hrs . Multiply 2 and 24 and cancel out
2 days ×
1 day
“day” as a unit then use the
remaining units in the given which
is hrs.
2 x 24 hrs .=48 hrs . Answer

Example B. Convert 95°F to degree Celsius.
Step 1:
°F
Identify the unit you are starting with.
Step 2:
Identify the unit you want to end with. degree Celsius
Step 3: 5
°C = (°F – 32)
Find the conversion factor/s or formula 9
5
°C = (95 – 32)
Step 4: Set up mathematical expression 9
so that all units except the unit you want 5
°C = (63)
to end with, will not be cancelled. 9
°C = 35 or 35°C
Step 5: Final answer °C = 35 or 35°C
20
Step 5: Final answer K = 263.15°
Therefore, 14°F = 263.15°
