The Phantom of the Opera

Summary

As soon as the opera house's old managers retire, singer Christine is elated. And as outcome
of Raoul seeing her perform, his feelings for her have been reignited. Many people believe that
the opera house is haunted by a phantom who sends ominous letters to the executives there. A
performance of Faust, starring Carlotta, is staged at the opera house, which enrages the Phantom.
The prima donna goes deaf during one of the performances, and a massive chandelier falls on top
of the audience.

The Phantom whereupon kidnaps Christine and goes to his residence in the opera house's
cellars. He uncovers his name: Erik. He plans to keep Christine locked up until she falls in love
with him. But she messes up his plans when she takes off his mask and shows his deformed and
rotting face. He then decides that he will keep her locked up forever as she will never fall in love
with him on her own. But when Christine begs to be let go, he agrees on one condition: she must
wear his ring and be loyal to him.

Raoul is informed by Christine of her abduction. He promises to protect her by transporting

her to a location where the Phantom will never be able to locate her. Christine performs one final
song for the Phantom on stage out of pity. Christine and Raoul are unaware that Erik has
overheard their plans and grown more enraged because of this. The following night, he kidnaps
Christine once more and demands her hand in marriage. If she does not consent, he threatens to
explode the opera house. She refuses despite learning that he has also abducted Raoul and is
holding him in a torture cell. She agrees to marry him.

Answer to the questions:

a. This story is about an opera singer who meets a disfigured man who lives in the opera
house. It is asserted that he sabotages the other cast and crew members in order to help
the opera singer get better roles. From there, the man escapes with the opera singer, but
stops when he realizes that her heart belongs to another opera singer, he knew from a
long time ago.

b. The set alone draws you in before the music even starts. The artistry required to turn a
grand opera stage into a dungeon was brilliant. The meticulously designed costumes of
all the characters, big and small, followed. The opera singers' costumes were as lavish as
the Victorian gowns and tailored suits. Their costumes and stage presence added to the
musical's realism. Simple scenery with few props allowed for quick scene changes. The
organization was adequate. Good stagecraft. It takes a special talent to portray each
character's depth in such a short time. But feeling Christine's grief over her father's death.
I realized how much she wanted to believe the Phantom was the promised musical angel.
I felt the Phantom's plight. To be understood and accepted, and then to be judged and
outcast, made sense to me. While he was the “villain,” I felt sorry for him and wished
him well. The two main characters in this production are incredibly talented.

c. The characters have different types of voices. The Phantom has high baritone with a
full range of at least two octaves, Christine has a soprano voice, Raoul has a light
baritone and other characters have mezzo soprano, tenor, and baritone.

d. The music mimics the movie's purpose, mystery, gothic horror, and romance. The
phantom reveals a mystery. Enhancing his gothic horror musical's carnage and dark
stature in the opera house. Romantic opera is also combined with drama and music that is
expressed with strong feelings or passions like love and death, while mystery or horror
opera can cause fear, strange, eerie that use atmosphere to bring suspense.
