3. Evaluation
Techniques (Part 1)

HUMAN COMPUTER INTERACTION

NORUL HUDA ABDUL RAZAK

3.1 Understand evaluation techniques
for evaluating interactive system

# Evaluate the design by expert

analysis:
• Cognitive walkthrough
• Heuristic evaluation
• Review-based evaluation
• Model-based evaluation
Expert Analysis 3:
Review
Based
Evaluation
Review Based Evaluation

1. Review-based evaluation is an expert-based

evaluation method that relies on experimental
results and empirical evidence from the
literature.

1. Example issues:
 Usability of different menu types
 Choice of icons
Expert Analysis 3:
Model
Based
Evaluation
Model Based Evaluation

1. An expert-based approach is the use of models.

1. Certain cognitive (reasoning / perception) and

design models provide a means of combining
design specification and evaluation into the
same framework.
Example 1: GOMS

1. GOMS (goals, operators,

methods and selection)
model.

2. Predicts user performance

with a particular interface
and can be used to filter
particular design options.
Example 2: Keystroke level model (KLM)

KLM is practical design

tools that capture and
calculate the physical
actions a user will have
to carry out to
complete specific task
Example 3: Design rationale

Recap Topic 2
Example 4: Dialog Models

Dialog models can

also be used to
evaluate dialog
sequences for
problems, such as
unreachable states,
circular dialogs and
complexity
Example 5: State Transition Network

State transition networks are useful for

evaluating dialog designs prior to
implementation.
