The bitter dolour of the shambles at Fes-
tubert, though not present in the visible
form of death, was here intensified by the
hearse-like quiet. The skies were already
overcast when we took over, and hardly had
our shovels commenced to strengthen the
position when a dreadful and prolonged
rainfall set in, flooding the trenches and heap-
ing discomfort on discomfort. In those early
days nobody knew the meaning of the word
" dug-out." We counted it lucky to be
able to scrape a niche in the mud and creep
in there to hide the utter weariness of our
bodies. No. 4 Communication Trench, full
