Time/Allotment 2 to 3 hours
Prepared by RYAN T. BALUYUT
Learning Competencies/Objectives
At the end of the cycle, student should be able to:
 Determine the percentage composition of a compound given its chemical formula or vice versa.
 Apply the concept of percentage composition in choosing grocery items;
 Realize that the amount of substance intake can be monitored with the use of percentage composition.
ELICIT MATERIALS
1. At the start of the lesson, the teacher will show pictures of food, medicine, Food, medicine,
pesticide and insecticide labels, packages and containers pesticide and insecticide
2. Ask the students what they can see in the food, medicine, pesticide and labels, packages and
insecticide labels, packages and containers containers
ENGAGE
Ask the students the importance of knowing nutrition facts of foods, supplement Food, medicine,
facts of medicines, active ingredients of pesticides and insecticides. pesticide and insecticide
labels, packages and
containers
EXPLORE
Working in groups, the students will perform Activity #7 entitled “It’s Grocery Time” TG and LM in Science 9
EXPLAIN
1. In groups, the students will be asked to present their data/answers in front of the Manila Paper and Pen
class.
2. The students will answer the following guide questions:
a. Based on the given activity, what food do you regularly consume which gives
your body a lot of carbon (C) atoms and Sodium (Na) ions?
b. Are these foods good for your body? Why? Research on how much of these
types of food recommended for your age group.
c. In what other ways can you make use of the concept on percentage
composition?
ELABORATE
Depending on how the students present their data, the teacher will discuss further chalk and board,
the concept of percentage composition of a compound using medicine products and calculator
agricultural fertilizer items as examples and particularly on how to solve for the
composition given a certain formula and vice versa, using the formula below:
% element = (Mass of the element /Total mass of the compound) x 100
EVALUATE
Quiz: Pen and Paper,
1. A component of antacid tablet is aluminum hydroxide, Al (OH)3. Determine Calculator
the percentage of oxygen in the given compound.
2. Epsom Salt is a laxative used in veterinary medicine and commonly used in
households as an anti-inflammatory soak. It is a hydrate, which means that it
contains trapped water molecules in the solid structure. The chemical
formula is MgSO4.7H2O. What is the percentage composition of each
element in the compound? What is the percentage composition of water in
the compound?
EXTEND
1. Benzoyl peroxide, C14H10O4, is a component of facial creams for the Pen and Paper,
treatment of acne, what is the percentage composition of each element in the Calculator
given compound?
