Five Sections of the UCAS Personal Statement

Section 1:

Why

You must demonstrate that you have thought thoroughly about the
suitability of the course and that you understand what particular courses
are offering. Show the admissions tutor that this is the course for you.
Identify some aspects of the course which particularly interests you - if
you are applying for a variety of courses try to find something common
which links them

Section 2:

What

What have you done to demonstrate your passionate interest in the


course subject? This might be specific projects you have worked on,
both in and outside of college. Here you might wish to focus on the
practical skills you are acquiring, with relevant software identified.

Section 3:

Academic

How does your current course relate to your chosen degree course?

What skills have you developed as a result of studying these that will be
key skills in your chosen area of study?

Examples:

Analysis, evaluating evidence, research skills, essay and report writing


Section 4:

Work Experience/Interests & 

Sports

What have you learned from any work experience or activities you have
been involved in that are relevant to your chosen course and university
life in general? This may also include voluntary work, travel and
interesting hobbies. Any sports involvement might be useful to include as
this can demonstrate particular qualities and strengths.

Section 5:

Conclusion/Summation

What statement can you make to sum up or evaluate all of the


information you have presented that gives your personal statement a
sense of completion? 

Remember that the conclusion is the last impression you make on the
admissions tutor and therefore psychologically is very powerful.
