Diagram-based questions practice:

1. The diagram below represents a stage during cell division. Study the same
and then answer, the questions, that follow:

(i) Name the parts labelled 1, 2 and 3.

1-asters
2-spindle fibres
3-chromatids
(ii) Identify the above stage and give a reason to support your answer.
The above stage is anaphase as the chromatids are moving towards the
asters and a cleavage is being formed.
(iii) Mention where in the body this type of cell division occurs.
In the somatic cells.
(iv) Name the stage prior to this stage and draw a diagram to represent the
same.
Metaphase.

2. (i) State Mendel’s law of Independent Assortment.

(ii) A homozygous tall plant (T) bearing red coloured (R) flowers is crossed with a
homozygous Dwarf plant (t) bearing white flowers (r):
(1) Give the Genotype and Phenotype of the F2 generation.

(2) Give the possible combinations of the gametes that can be obtained from the
F2 hybrid.

(3) Give the dihybrid ratio and the phenotype of the offspring of the F 2 generation
when two plants of the F1 generation above are crossed.

3. The diagram given below is of an experiment just at the start. Study the diagram
carefully and answer the following questions:

(i) What does the experiment demonstrate?

Osmosis.
(ii) Define, the process demonstrated in the experiment.
Osmosis is the movement of water molecules form its region of higher concentration
to its region of lower concentration through a semi-permeable membrane.
(iii) What changes are observed after a few hours?
There is more water in tube A and less water in tube B.
(iv) Give two examples of a semi permeable membrane.
Potato membrane and animal bladder.
(v) Which limb of the U-tube contains more concentrated sucrose solution, A or B?
A
(vi) Why is the membrane separating the two solutions labelled as semi permeable
membrane?
This is because the membrane only allows water molecules to pass through
and bigger molecules like sucrose cannot pass through.

4. Given below is the diagram of an experimental set up to study the process of

transpiration in plants. Study the same and then answer the questions that follow:
(i) What is the colour of dry cobalt chloride paper?
(ii) Is the experimental leaf a monocot or a dicot? Give a reason to support your
answer.
(iii) Why axe glass slides placed over the dry cobalt chloride papers?
(iv) After about half an hour what change, if any, would you expect to find in the
cobalt chloride paper placed on the dorsal and ventral sides of the leaf? Give a
reason to support your answer.
(v) Define the term ‘transpiration’.

5. Observe the diagram given below:

(i) Identify the above diagram.

(ii) Label the guidelines 1-3.
(iii) Name the phenomenon which takes place in the above diagram.
(iv) Define the phenomenon.
(v) What is the importance of the above phenomenon?

6. Given alongside is a diagram of the external features of the heart.

(i) Name the parts ‘1’ to ‘7’.
(ii) What happens if the coronary artery gets an internal clot?
(iii) Which type of blood does part ‘5’ carry?
(iv) Mention one structural difference between part ‘5’ and ‘4’.

7. The diagram shows the Excretory System of a Human being. Study the same and
then answer the questions that follow:

(i) Name the parts labelled 1, 2,3, and 4.

(ii) Give the main function of the parts labelled 5,6, 7 and 8.
(iii) Name the endocrine gland which could be added in diagram and state its
location/position.
8. The diagram given below shows the internal structure of the spinal cord, depicting a
simple reflex. Study the same and then answer the questions that follow:

(i) Name the parts numbered 1 to 5.

(ii) Using the letters of the alphabet shown in the figure indicate the direction in which
an impulse enters and leaves the spinal cord.
(iii) What is the term given to the point of contact between two nerve cells?
(iv) What is meant by ‘simple reflex’? Give two examples of simple reflexes and name
the stimuli too.
(v) How does the arrangement of nerve cells in the spinal cord differ from that in the
brain?

9. The sketch below shows a certain condition in an individual:

(i) Name the condition.

(ii) What is the underlying cause of this condition?
(iii) Name two other conditions that could have resulted due to a similar cause.
(iv) Which hormone is required for iodine synthesis?
(v) Where is thyroid gland located?
(vi) The hormone secreted by thyroid gland is controlled from which hormone?
10. Given below is a diagram of the female reproductive system of a human being :

(i) Name the parts numbered 1 to 6.

(ii) Normally after how many days does an ovary release an egg ?
(iii) Where are the sperms released during coitus ?
(iv) What do the sperms do after being released ?
(v) What is the function of the organ numbered 5?
(vi) How many days does it normally take from the fertilization of the egg up to the
birth of the baby ?

11. Observe the diagram A and B given below:

(i) Label parts 1 – 5.

(ii) What does diagram A depict?
(iii) What does diagram B depict?
(iv) What comment on X and Y.
(v) State one function each of part 2 and 4.

12. Explain the following terms:

a. Noise pollution f. Bio-fertilizer

b. Pollution g. Manure
c. Pollutant h. Decibel
d. Particulate pollutant i. Ammonification
e. Smog j. Nitrification
