INFANT FEEDING/NEWBORN FEEDING

Orogastric tube is a small tubes placed in the mouth and end with the tip in the stomach. It is used for feedings,
medication administration, or removal of content from the stomach via aspiration or suction.

Indication:
 Swallowing and sucking problems
 Birth defect (ex; clift palate, problem in stomach)
 Failure to thrive (failed to develop)
 Cardiopulmonary problem

Nursing Responsibility:
 Prepare materials
o Gloves
o Lubricants
o Feeding tube (French 5 if baby is <200g and French 6 if >200g)
o 5 cc syringe
o Scissors
o Plaster- to anchor tube
 Assist doctor in insertion
o Position newborn (20-40°angle head of the baby to facilitate insertion
o Adjust the length to be inserted
 OGT- lips  earlobe  stomach
 NGT- peak of the nose  earlobe  stomach
o Aspirate gastric content to verify is the tip of the tube is on the stomach
 Yellow in color (newborn)
 Use asepto syringe to check for gargling sound
 Put water to kidney basin and dip the end of the tube
 Xray
 Feeding the Baby:
o Identify patient
o Explain to the mother the procedure
o Maintain safety and privacy
o Aspirate gastric contents to verify the location of tube
o Introduce feed
 Kink the tube and open the port (to prevent air)
 Put syringe
 Put feed to syringe & release kink
 Sterile water for cleansing
o Let baby burp
o Oral care
 Removing tube
