VECTORS
1. Find a vector in the direction of vector 𝑎⃗ 𝚤̂ 2𝚥̂ that has magnitude 7 units.
2. Show that the points A, B and C with position vectors 𝑎⃗ 3𝚤̂ 4𝚥̂ 4𝑘 , 𝑏⃗ 2𝚤̂ 𝚥̂ 𝑘 and
𝑐⃗ 𝚤̂ 3𝚥̂ 5𝑘 respectively from the vertices of a right-angled triangle.
3. Find 𝑎⃗ 𝑏⃗ , if two vectors 𝑎⃗ and 𝑏⃗ are such that |𝑎⃗| 2, 𝑏⃗ 3 and 𝑎⃗ ⋅ 𝑏⃗ 4.
4. Find the area of the parallelogram whose adjacent sides are determined by the vectors 𝑎⃗ 𝚤̂ 𝚥̂ 3𝑘 and
𝑏⃗ 2𝚤̂ 7𝚥̂ 𝑘 .
5. If a unit vector 𝑎⃗ makes angles with 𝚤̂ , with 𝚥̂ and acute angle 𝜃 with 𝑘 , then find 𝜃 and hence, find the
components of 𝑎⃗.
6. Let 𝑎⃗, 𝑏⃗ and 𝑐⃗ be three vectors such that |𝑎⃗| 3, 𝑏⃗ 4, |𝑐⃗| 5 and each one of them being perpendicular to the

𝜆𝚤̂ 2𝚥̂ 3𝑘 is equal to one. Find the value of 𝜆.
9. If the sum of two unit vectors is a unit vector, Prove that the magnitude of their difference is √3.
10. If 𝑎⃗ and 𝑏⃗ are position vectors of points A and B respectively, then find the position vector of points of trisection
of AB.
11. Prove that the line segment joining the mid-points of two sides of a triangle is parallel to the third side and equal to
half of it.
12. ABCD is a parallelogram. If the coordinates of A, B, C are 2, 1 , 3,0 and 1, 2 respectively, Find the
coordinate of D.
13. Show that the points A, B, C with position vectors 2𝑎⃗ 3𝑏⃗ 5𝑐⃗, 𝑎⃗ 2𝑏⃗ 3𝑐⃗ and 7𝑎⃗ 𝑐⃗ respectively are
collinear.
14. If a vector makes 𝛼, 𝛽, 𝛾 with 𝑂𝑋, 𝑂𝑌 and 𝑂𝑍 respectively, prove that sin 𝛼 sin 𝛽 sin 𝛾 2.

15. If 𝑎 and 𝑏 are unit vectors inclined at an angle 𝜃, then prove that sin 𝑎 𝑏.

16. If 𝑎⃗ 𝑏⃗ 𝑐⃗ 0, |𝑎⃗| 3, 𝑏⃗ 5, |𝑐⃗| 7, find the angle between 𝑎⃗ and 𝑏⃗.

point R which divides the line joining P and Q in the ratio 2: 1, (i) internally and (ii) externally.

1. Write the direction cosines of a line equally inclined to the three coordinate axes?

2. Find the points on the line at a distance of 5 units from the point 1,3,3 .

3. If a line makes angles 90°, 135°, 45° with the 𝑥, 𝑦 and 𝑧 axes respectively, find its direction cosines.

5. Bag I contains 3 red and 4 black balls and Bag II contains 4 red and 5 black balls. One ball is transferred from Bag
I to Bag II and then a ball is drawn from Bag II. The ball so drawn is found to be red in colour. Find the probability
that the transferred ball is black.

6. A bag contains 4 balls. Two balls are drawn at random and are found to be white. What is the probability that all
balls are white?

7. Suppose that 5% of men and 0.25% of women have grey hair. A grey-haired person is selected at random. What is
the probability of this person being male? Assume that there are equal number of males and females?

8. A speaks the truth 8 times out of 10 times. A die is tossed. He reports that it was 5. What is the probability that it
was actually 5?

9. An insurance company insured 2000 scooters and 3000 motor cycles. The probability of an accident involving a
scooter is 0.01 and that of a motor cycle is 0.02. An insured vehicle met with an accident. Find the probability that
accident vehicle was a motor cycle?

10. A card from a pack of 52 cards is lost. From the remaining cards of the pack, two cards are drawn and are found to
the both diamonds. Find the probability of lost card being a diamond?

11. A die is thrown twice and the sum of the numbers appearing is observed to be 6. What is the conditional probability
that the number 4 has appeared at least once?

12. Assume that each born child is equally likely to be a boy or a girl. If a family has two children, what is the conditional
probability that both are girls given that at least one is a girl.
13. If A and B are two independent events. Show that the probability of occurrence of at least one of A and B is given

is the probability that the second ball is red.

17. In an examination, 20 questions of true-false type are asked. Suppose a student tosses a fair coin to determine his
answer lo each question. If the coin falls heads, he answers 'true', if it falls tails, he answers 'false'. Find the
probability that he answers at least 12 questions correctly.
18. A die is thrown again and again until three sixes are obtained. Find the probability of obtaining the third six in the

22. Three persons A, B, C throw a die in succession till one gets a 'six' and wins the game. Find their respective

23. A man is known to speak truth 3 out of 4 times. He throws a die and reports that it is a six. Find the probability that
it is actually a six.
24. An urn contains 4 white and 3 red balls. Find the probability distribution of the number of red balls in a random
draw of three balls.
25. Grandfather gave a puzzle to Harish and Ria. The probability of solving the puzzle independently by Harish and
Ria are and respectively. Based on the information answer the following questions:

(iii) Find the probability that puzzle is solved.

26. If in recent years in a desert, there is rain only in 5 days each year. Also, it is given that it actually rains, the
weatherman forecasts rain 90% of the time. When it doesn’t rain, he incorrectly forecasts rain 10% of the time.
A person has birthday party tomorrow in that desert. Based on the information answer the following questions:
(i) If an ordinary year is considered, what is the probability that it rains on the birthday?
(ii) What is the probability that it does not rain on birthday?
(iii) What is the probability that weatherman predicts correctly?
(iv) What is the probability that it will rain on birthday if the weatherman predicts rain for tomorrow?
(v) What is the probability that it will not rain on birthday if the weatherman predicts rain for tomorrow?
