Srinagar, May 3: Five secu-
rity personnel including a
Colonel, a Major a Police
sub-inspector and two sol-
diers were killed in an
18-hour long encounter with
militants in Handwara area
of north Kashmir’s Kupwara
district on Sunday. Two mil-
itants were also killed in the
encounter while a soldier
was injured.
The security personnel
killed were identified as
Colonel Ashutosh Sharma,

nant women in hospitals
here have exposed the
agonies that Kashmir’s
sick and expecting women
are undergoing amidst
COVID19 crisis.
On Saturday, a woman
hailing from a red zone
area of Anantnag district
delivered at Lal Ded Hospi-
tal. Soon after the delivery,
the woman’s sample, taken
on 29 April as routine for
pregnant women in red
zone areas, tested positive.
The test report came as a
shock for the staff that had
carried out the delivery of
the woman at the hospital.
“We had not been told that
she is a red zone resident.
We would have attended
to her according to the
protocol we have in place
for all such women here,”

when a shell exploded in
orchards at Ahgam area of

He not only revealed the shortcom-
ings but hinted that excellence can be
achieved if department and the teach-
ers work together.
His tweet was flooded with respons-
es from the teachers, masters and
lecturers but none came up with the
solution; only highlighted the mistakes
done in past by the policy makers. The
debate on twitter lasted for hours only
to end with blame game. The blame
was finally put on the department as
it failed to upgrade the infrastructure
and revise the curriculum in schools.
The tweet also exposed the infight-
schools to take classes of secondary
and senior secondary level students.
You can blame the policy makers for
using the scheme for their personal
interests but not the teachers who are
working in toughest terrains.
The debate on twitter ended after a
long thread of verbal brawls and blame
game from different associations of
teachers but there was no solution
from either side. It has been an ever
going process that no one has got the
solution to the problem that ails the
education sector, all resort to buck
passing.
I was taken aback by the blame
game of teachers who tried to save
their skin and wanted the depart-
ment to first rectify the past mistakes
which according to them can reform
the sector. The teachers (SSA, General
Line, Lecturers) who were vocal on
twitter in highlighting the past mis-
takes, have been seen hitting streets
for every now and then in past to
press for their demands. Ironically,
not a single slogan was ever raised
for demanding proper infrastructure,
adequate teaching faculty or updated
curriculum in schools. The protest was
always for promotions, salary, arrears
and related issues which we can relate
to their career progression.
I have seen the education depart-
ment very closely for last almost
eight years now and have come across

where teachers outnumber students

the required faculty. Here the schools
in rural areas are worst hit.
Given my experience, I have come to
believe that this issue is not as simple
as it seems to be. There is more to it
than meets the eye. Several attempts
were made in past to bring reforms
but those reform measures were never
taken to logical end. For example, the
department wanted to create a data-
base of all teachers, masters and lec-
tures and decided to reshuffle the staff
as per the demand and requirement in
schools. But due to infighting in the
department, the initiative never mate-
rialised. Also, authorities had also
decided to keep certain conditions for
the staff to be posted in DIETs and SIE

are linked to his personal likings not
as a policy matter. With the result the
administrators see their association
with the education department brief
because they all know once it hits the
collective ego of influential Babus in
the government, he will be shifted to
other department leaving his initia-
tives incomplete. It goes like this, and

own ideas which again fades away with
his shifting to the other department.
Anyone who was appointed as head
of the department has never dared to
take any such initiative that will dis-
turb the vested interests. If he does
so, he is shown the door. In this way,
everyone contributed in getting our
government education sector deterio-
rated.
Now what can help the department
in achieving the excellence is the joint
effort from the policy makers, and the
teachers who are the foot soldiers of
the department. The way teachers are
working amid this pandemic is an eye
opener. They don’t find any excuse
(lack of infrastructure, outdated cur-
riculum) to stop from rendering their
services. But it is just their will power
to deliver. Similarly, regretting the
past mistakes is not a solution to the
problem but positivity for making
a better tomorrow can flourish the
department. Create sense of belonging

igher education offers possible solutions to
reflect on the decisive health, socio-economic
and professional issues currently human-
ity is facing. It potentially induces national
development through creation of knowledge
and expertise. Being at the zenith of the pyramid, it
has a key role to play in responding to the new chal-
lenges through research and innovations.
The progress of higher education in India has
taken a quantum jump. Since independence, the
Indian higher education system has developed
extraordinarily. It has made a journey from 20 uni-
versities in 1947 to 993; from 500 colleges to more
than 39931 colleges besides 10725 stand-alone institu-
tions. Now, our higher education system is globally
the 2nd largest in terms of institutions and 3rd largest
in terms of student enrolment. The Gross Enrol-
ment Ratio (GER) has significantly increased and
reached 27 where 3.75 crore students are enrolled.

ture of the university.

front, campus digital culture needs to be augmented
as its advantages are advanced.

In Jammu & Kashmir, though a good number of
universities were already in place but their man-
date (vision & mission) was somehow not distinctive
to each other. To fill the void one more institution
in the form of Central University of Kashmir (CUK)
was established in 2009 as a Pace Setting University.
CUK was established by the Act of Parliament and
started its journey from Hyderpora Srinagar. The
University started its academic activities in 2010
when 75 students were admitted in 03 programmes
(MBA, M.Sc. IT & M.A. English). For teaching learn-
ing process, the university hired rented accommo-
dations first in Sonwar, Magarmal Bagh, Zainakote
to Nowgam and in 2018 the university was shifted
to Ganderbal in phased manner. Despite mammoth
challenges, it is laudable that the enrolment of CUK
has touched 2500 including almost 200 research
scholars and the number of programmes has also
gone up from 03 in 2010 to 43 in 2019. The best brains
of the country in the form of faculty on substantive
basis started to join the university since 2012. Fac-
ulty of CUK is intellectually elevated and their main
focus is always on incremental progression of their
disciples eliminating placebo effects. The university
has its own Design and Innovation Centre (DIC) and
its main focus is to promote local crafts on scientific
lines. CUK was able to get accredited in 2017 though
at rented campuses and was accredited with B ++
grade. In 2018, the university was in a position to
hold its first convocation.

tion. We can also localise courses on MOOCs keep-
ing in view different peculiarities of our society.
The university can also create a possibility for
Life Skill Online Courses (LSOCs). In this direc-
tion, on-campus enrolled students may be given
opportunity to opt for these courses in addition to
their own programme in the form of blended course
so that more attraction is generated among students
because blended courses have higher potential as
compared to other conventional or online courses
keeping in view the flawless integration of physical
and virtual learning spaces through blended learn-
ing which provides access to alternative resources.
The Central University of Kashmir, a lead uni-
versity, has a firm conviction to guide the existing
higher education institutions of the region. Keep-
ing in view the past circumstances and the current
pandemic situation, it becomes imperative to take
a lead and without losing its originality come up
with alternative and innovative ways not only in
teaching & learning but also in examination and
evaluation mechanism even if the university may
have to amend its act or ordinances.

21-RR, J&K’s Police’ SOG and CRPF. Later soldiers from 9
Para also took part in the operation.
"A joint operation was launched by the Army and the
police on Saturday. A team comprising five Army and
police personnel entered the target area occupied by the
militants to evacuate the civilians. They successfully extri-
cated the civilians. However, during the process, the team
was subjected to heavy volume of fire by the militants,”
Army spokesman Col. Rajesh Kalia said.
Reports said Col. Sharma-led party found themselves in
front of the militants, who had already entered the house.
Talking to the Greater Kashmir, General Officer Com-
manding 15 Corps, Lt Gen Raju, said that the operation was
going on for last some days. He said that they had tracked
the militants in forests, but it would have led to civilian
casualties in case of an encounter. "These days people are
collecting Guchi in forests," Gen Raju said.
Gen. Raju said that on Saturday Army got fresh informa-
tion that militants are in a house in Chanjmulla. "The first
party that reached there was CO and four others includ-
ing JK Police officer," he said, adding that there was call
for help from inside. "Once the party entered the house,
encounter started," the GOC said.
"Then the contact with the party was lost. They were
fired upon inside the house leading to fatalities,” he said.
The senior Army General said that militants were also
killed on Saturday evening. "We did not clear the house
during the night fearing more casualties," Gen Raju said.
"In the morning, we recovered the bodies of our people
and militants."
He said that in the operation LeT top commander Haider,
a Pakistani militant, was killed. He said that militants were
only two in number. "Rest are speculations including the
one that a phone call on the mobile phone of the Colonel
was attended by a militant."
This is the second time when 21-RR has lost it command-
ing officer. In 2000, Colonel Rajinder Chauhan along with
Brig B S Shergil were killed in an IED attack on Handwara-
Zachaldara road.
This is the fourth incident in which the security forces
have suffered heavy casualties in recent days. On Friday,
two soldiers were killed in cross-LoC shelling in Uri. Last
month, five elite Para soldiers were killed in an encounter
with militants in Keran and three CRPF personnel was
killed in Sopore shootout.

their sacrifice and bravery will never be forgotten.
He said, "The loss of our soldiers and security personnel
in Handwara is deeply disturbing and painful. They showed
exemplary courage in their fight against the militants and
made supreme sacrifice while serving the country. We will
never forget their bravery and sacrifice."
The minister said that he offers his tributes to the sol-
diers and security personnel who fell in action. "My heart
goes out to the families who lost their loved ones today.
India stands shoulder to shoulder with the families of these
brave martyrs," the minister tweeted.
Saluting these personnel, the Chief of Defence Staff Gen-
eral Bipin Rawat said, "Commanding Officer leading from
the front along with other personnel of the unit and J&K
Police have laid down their lives, living upto the motto;
Service Before Self.”
In a statement, Indian Army said that based on the
intelligence input that militants were taking the civil-
ian inmates of a house in Changimulla at Handwara of
Kupwara district hostage, a joint operation was launch by
Army and Jammu and Kashmir Police.
"A team comprising of five Army and J&K Police per-
sonnel entered the target area occupied by the militants
to evacuate the civilians. The team of Army and JK Police
entered the target area and successfully extricated the
civilian," Army said.
The force stated that during the process, the team was
subjected to heavy volume of fire by the militants.
"In the ensuing fire fight two militants were eliminated
and the team of five army and J&K personnel comprising of
two Army officers, two Army soldiers and one J&K Police
Sub Inspector attained martyrdom," Army said.
Lieutenant Governor Girish Chandra Murmu today paid
tributes to the slain security personnel.
“The Lt Governor observed that the supreme sacrifice
made by security personnel who attained martyrdom
during an encounter in Handwara area of Kashmir will
always be remembered. He also expressed his solidarity
with the families of the martyrs and said that the sacrifices
of these brave-hearts will not go waste,” a statement said.

of the four as Green Zones.

scale industries will be allowed to start operations from
Monday. “We are also keen that small scale industry such
as handicrafts and handlooms start their production,”
Pole said adding that while all these will be allowed to
resume, “but on the ground there shall be no ease in
restrictions.”
Earlier on April 20, after government of India
allowed ‘partial functioning’ of the industry across
the country , several manufacturing units producing
essential goods located outside the municipal limits
and the red zones in Kashmir have already resumed
operations. “We have made it very specific that no
industry in any red zone or municipal area will be
allowed to operate. Also no non-essential industry can
resume the work,” Pole said.
The Div Com said: “Some of the cement factories who
have in-house labourers are also operational. Construction
work under government schemes in various departments
under specific guidelines is also underway. There are 56,000
outside workforce in the Valley many of whom are being
put back on the job.”
Pole made it clear that no other service or business
including general trade “shall be allowed to resume activi-
ties in the Valley”.

Dr Farhat Jabeen, head department of gynaecology and
obstetrics at GMC Srinagar said.
Dr Jabeen said the patient’s attendants had concealed her residence.
“The patient was in active labour, she could have been delivered any-
where,” she said.
However, that was not the case. While the woman was suffering labor
pain, she was refused admission at three hospitals they went to before
reaching LD Hospital. “They did not even cast a glance at my wife,” her
husband said.
The denial of admission and the chaos surrounding which patient
can be treated at which facility is resulting in “unspeakable pain” to
patients, a senior doctor at GMC Srinagar said. He said a majority of
patients continue to be non-COVID19. “However, no thought is being
spared for them,” he said.
A doctor working in SKIMS Soura said that the way COVID19 was
being managed in Kashmir was putting every other patient’s life at risk.
“If a heart attack patient from a red zone arrives at a hospital ‘not meant
for suspected cases’, he will be asked to travel a 100 km to reach some
other hospital identified for the purpose,” he said.
A senior doctor working in GMC Baramulla said that the associated
hospital of the medical college, which has been designated a COVID19
hospital is refusing every patient with any other emergency. “DH Baram-
ulla was the main hospital in north Kashmir for catering to patient needs,
including emergencies,” he said. He said that recently patient with a
bone fracture and another with gall bladder rupture were refused treat-
ment at the hospital and asked to seek treatment elsewhere.
COVID19 management was making healthcare difficult to access for
most patients, he said.
Moreover, a doctor working at LD Hospital said, doctors were also
bearing the brunt of the crisis. “They face the wrath of people and expo-
sure to the illness both,” she said while blaming administrative decisions
for this.
11 staff members were put under quarantine due to their possible
exposure to the COVID19 positive case. Medical superintendent of
the Hospital, Dr Shabir Siddiqui said three doctors have also been put
under quarantine.
However, he said, the patient’s attendant could not be blamed for
exposing the doctors and nurses to the infection. “His wife was in labor
pain and he had suffered a great deal before reaching here,” he said.
Government on 01 May instituted an SOP for handling pregnant
women amidst COVID19. Last month, an SOP was formulated to desig-
nate health facilities in Kashmir as Level 1, 2 and 3 as per their capacity
to manage COVID19.
However, confusion is rife regarding these measures.
En route Srinagar, at Mother and Child Hospital Anantnag, where the
woman could have delivered has been rendered inaccessible for preg-
nant women from Red Zones. Medical Superintendent of the hospital
said they had the instructions to refer pregnant women from Red Zones
to SKIMS MC “till Friday”. “The instructions changed on Saturday and
now we are shifting such women to SDH Bijbehara,” he said.
Medical superintendent SKIMS MC Hospital Dr Shifa Deva said since
the hospital is a COVID19 designated facility, it cannot accept “suspected
cases”. “We are meant to handle surgeries and other procedures of
COVID19 positive cases. And when she reached our hospital, she was
yet to be confirmed at COVID19 positive case,” she said.
From Lal Ded Hospital, the woman was referred back to SDH Bijbe-
hara “in an hour”, her husband said. “My wife and my newborn have
undergone agony that we had never imagined,” he said. “Why are we
being treated like this,” he asked.
Just a day later, a woman from Seer Anantnag died while in labor.
While the administration at MCH Anantnag refused to provide the ambu-
lance to the family for taking the body due to “pending procedures”
- taking her sample for COVID19 testing - the body was taken out of the
hospital towards home on a stretcher. He said the patient was brought
dead to the hospital and a team had been called for sampling her “even
though she was not from a red zone”. “However the family was agitated,”
he said.

However, the MCH administration maintained that the woman was
bought dead to the hospital. The family members alleging medical
negligence staged a protest in the hospital premises at Seer.
“We bought her to SDH Seer yesterday noon, but the doctors delayed
her the treatment,” alleged Bilal Bhat, cousin of deceased.
Bhat said in the morning at around 6:00 after her condition deteriorat-
ed, she was shifted to MCHH Anantnag from the labour room. “The doc-
tors in MCCH after examining her declared her bought dead,” Bhat said.
“My sister and the baby she was carrying in her womb were murdered
by doctors in Seer,” he alleged.
Bhat said in MCCH Anantnag, the authorities later refused to hand
over them the body on the pretext of taking samples first. “We were not
provided the ambulance by the hospital. They told us that her samples
would be collected and the body is taken to mortuary first. As we feared
of being denied even a decent burial we were left with no choice but to
take her body out in a hospital trolley,” he said.
Bhat said they had to walk around a kilometer through the old town
along with the body. “Our relatives finally bought the car which we
boarded near to the KP Road and drove the body to our native village,”
Bhat said. Soon, a video of family carrying the body in a trolley went
viral on social media.
The nitizens blamed the authorities for their failure in handling preg-
nant patients in the present crisis.
“MCH Anantnag again. Where does the problem lie? It is again
blamed game going on without addressing the core issue. The proper
infrastructure, the hospital is lacking and the referral system may suffice
the need. Kindly address it before it is too late (sic),” a local Sadat Khaki
wrote on micro-blogging website twitter.
Block Medical Officer (BMO)Mattan, Dr Zahoor Ahmad said the
women had pregnancy at a “matured stage” but had silent labour.
“She was taken to the labour room at 5:30 in the morning for normal
delivery. But since she developed labour obstruction, the doctors pre-
ferred to refer her to MCCH,” Ahmad said.
Medical Superintendent ( MS), MCCH Dr Mir JI Andrabi, however, said
the pregnant woman was bought dead to the hospital. “As per protocols
we were supposed to take the sample of the deceased woman, wrap it
properly and hand it over to the family. However, as we were making
the preparations, her relatives created ruckus and took away the body
forcibly,” Andrabi said. Meanwhile, following the protest by family, the
authorities placed a doctor and a paramedic under suspension and
ordered inquiry into the incident. “The medical officer, Dr. Ridwana
and staff nurse Zareefa Akhtar are put under suspension regarding the
death of a pregnant woman, admitted at SDH Seer, under MRD no. 298
at MCCH, GMC Anantnag with the inquiry pending regarding the case,”
read the order issued by BMO.
CMO Anantnag, Dr. Mukhtar Ahmad also confirmed that the inquiry
has been ordered. “We have sent the preliminary inquiry report to the
directorate of health services,” he said.
Deputy Commissioner, Anantnag has also ordered an inquiry into
the incident. “The inquiry will be conducted by Additional deputy com-
missioner Anantnag and the report will be submitted within three days,”
he said. The DC said whosoever will be found guilty the action would
be taken against him.
India cases rise...
Maharashtra, 26 from Gujarat, 11 from Madhya Pradesh,
three each from Rajasthan and Delhi, two from Telangana
and one each from Tamil Nadu and Bihar.
With 521 fatalities, Maharashtra accounts for the maximum
of the nationwide 1,306 deaths. Gujarat comes second with 262
deaths, followed by Madhya Pradesh 156, Rajasthan 65, Delhi 64,
Uttar Pradesh 43, and West Bengal and Andhra Pradesh 33 each.

"One more positive case from Sanku Kargil,” he said in

The total number of positive cases in Ladakh has gone up
to 42, of which 17 have recovered and have been discharged
from hospitals. Total active cases in the UT now stand at 25.

On Sunday, GMC Srinagar reported 846 COVID19 tests had been car-
ried out at it virology lab. At SKIMS, Dr Farooq Jan, medical superinten-
dent of the Institute said, 826 samples had been tested. Together, in past
24 hours 1672 tests were carried out in Kashmir of which 35 were found to
be positive. The positive percentage on Sunday stood at 2 percent. On
Saturday, 25 out of 1083 tested total were found positive – 2.3 percent.
On 25 April, 42 out of 1071 samples had tested positive – 3.9 percent.
On 22 April, 27 positives were reported out of 719 tested – 3.7 percent.
Kupwara district had 11 new cases today, Anantnag 10, Budgam 5,
Shopian 4, Baramulla 3 and Pulwama 1. One positive case been reported
from Jammu division.
While the total number of cases in Kashmir division detected so far
is 640, Jammu has reported 61 cases.
Among the new cases is a pregnant woman from Anantnag. As per
government orders, all pregnant women in red zones are being sampled
for COVID19. Priority is being given to women who have completed 34
weeks of pregnancy.
A one-year old girl from Shopian is also among positives. The girl
is the youngest COVID19 case reported in Kashmir so far. Earlier last
week, a two year old from Shopian had also tested positive, the young-
est at that time.
Last month, a COVID19 negative eight month old had been reported
as a COVID19 positive case by Government “due to some confusion”. A
four year old cousin of this girl had tested positive.
Five other children aged between 2 and 7 have tested positive today.
Five among today’s positive cases are elderly people aged over 60 years.
Three districts in Kashmir now have 100 plus COVID19 cases.
As per a fresh order issued by J&K Government, all districts in Kash-
mir division have been categorized as red zones. In addition, Jammu,
Kathua and Samba have also been put under red zone category. Doda,
Kishtwar and Poonch are green districts as per this order available on
the directorate of information and public relations official Twitter handle.
14 new cases...
An official here said that the three positive tested cases
belong to Hardu Ichloo Tangmarg. He said they include a
young girl and a kid aged two years.
“All the three have contact history with a person from same village
who was tested positive for the virus on Saturday,” said Dr Syed Masood,
Medical Superintendent associated hospital Government Medical Col-
lege Baramulla.
Meanwhile, 11 persons from Kupwara district tested positive on
Sunday, taking the total number of positive cases in the district to 43.
An official said that all the 11 persons belong to Gonipora village in
Handwara. “All the 11 positive cases have history of contact with the
earlier positive tested cases. The contact tracing and testing in the
entire red zone area will continue,” said Anshul Garg, Deputy Commis-
sioner Kupwara.

“Yes, I have gone into home quarantine. It is an added
precautionary measure after brother of one of our corpo-
rators tested positive,” the Mayor told Greater Kashmir.
“As an extra precaution, nearly 50 persons including deputy mayor
Parvaiz Qadri, corporator and SMC employees have been ordered to
remain in self isolation and self-quarantine till the specific corporator
tests negative,” he said.
“What I was told is that the brother of corporator came on 26 April
and went into quarantine on 27th or 28th April. The corporator is himself
yet to be tested and I think he is being tested on 4 May. The corporator
must cooperate with authorities, in case there is any probe,” he said.
He added that they would go back to work if the corporator tested
negative.
The Mayor appealed to the people to cooperate with the authorities
and adhere to all laws and advisories to defeat COVID19.
Meanwhile, on Saturday, panic gripped SMC workers after sibling
of the corporator from Downtown tested positive. The reason for panic
was that corporator is living with his brother while the corporator has
actively participated in various sanitation drives.
This can lead to the chain of infection in case the corporator himself
tests positive. The family members of the positive patient including the
corporator have been put under quarantine.
It were neighbours who informed district administration Srinagar
about the corporator’s brother travel history. His samples were taken
and tested positive on Friday evening.
Following the development, District Development Commissioner
Srinagar Dr Shahid Iqbal Chowdary made a tweet asking people to be
“responsive and truthful.”
Without naming the COVID19 patient, the DDC tweeted on Saturday:
“Covid fight belongs to Citizens. Alert, responsive & truthful. Flagged
by neighbors a resident arriving clandestinely, picked up promptly,
tested positive. Let’s not rush, rather follow protocols. Narwara now
Red Zone (sic).”

“We don’t want to die here. The COVID-19 positive cases in Gandhi-
nagar Gujarat are rising with each passing day. We fear to go out for
fetching essential items,” said Ishfaq Majid, Ph D scholar from Kashmir.
“We are in self-quarantine from March 17 in University hostels. We
have already registered online on the link provided by J&K administra-
tion. We urge the J&K authorities to shift us to Valley,” he said.
Another group of 50 to 60 people is stranded in Kolkata for past 45
days demanded immediate shifting to Valley. “We came here in Novem-
ber with our business purpose. But we are in very difficult situations and
are running out of money,” said one of the stranded persons. “Please
send us back to our homes in Srinagar,” he said.
Another group of businessmen stuck at Aligarh complained that they
were not getting any help from the administration.
“We approach the concerned authorities here but we were told that
they have not received any circular to send us back to J&K. Please help
us,” said Gowhar Majeed.
Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, Pandurang Kondbarao Pole said

Democractic Party leader,
Rouf Bhat on Saturday criti-
cized the government for the

internet and harassment of

in the region are harassed

Saudi women's organisations intervene to meet corona challenge

DUBAI, May 3: They were told to stay at home
and begin remote learning like everyone else.
But they had no laptops. How could they par-
ticipate in their school’s online classes without
computers?
This is the kind of dilemma underprivileged
families in south Jeddah are facing as Saudi
Arabia is compelled to enforce lockdowns on
public life to stop the spread of the deadly coro-
navirus.
But help is at hand. Saudi women’s empower-
ment organizations, both long-time established
and recently formed, have risen to the challenge
with public-spirited initiatives.
“The families in south Jeddah were the first
to be under the 24-hour lockdown in Saudi
Arabia because they live closely to each other
in a high-risk area,” said Dania Al-Maeena, CEO
of Aloula, a Saudi non-profit organization.
“We collaborated with a volunteer group
called Khadoum that provides distance learn-
ing. Hundreds of individuals across Saudi
Arabia supported the campaign, and over 15
companies donated laptops, food and games for
the children.”
Children of low-income families are able to
continue remote learning with the help of lap-
tops given by Saudi women's group Alnahda.
“Women are the caregivers, and so women
are bearing the brunt of the adverse effects of the
COVID-19 pandemic,” said Rasha Alturki, CEO
of Riyadh-based Alnahda Society for Women,
which has provided assistance since 1962 to
women who are at risk or belong to socioeco-
nomically disadvantaged households.
This year, as part of Saudi Arabia’s G20 presi-
dency, Alnahda was entrusted by a royal decree
with leading the W20, an official G20 engage-
ment group dedicated to women’s issues.
At the outset of the COVID-19 outbreak in
Saudi Arabia, Aloula staged a campaign entitled
“Alnass Libaed” (“People Are for Each Other”),
said Al-Maeena.
“We placed a new target to help 800 families
and 4,000 beneficiaries, providing them with
food baskets, including water, dates, canned
foods and food donated by restaurants, as well
as toys for children,” she told Arab News.
Established in 1962 by a group of women to
support families in south Jeddah and registered
with the Ministry of Labor and Social Develop-
ment, Aloula’s founders have banded together
for humanitarian work whenever the need
arises. The same kind of intervention is visible
during the coronavirus pandemic.
The founders of Aloula “had no phones back
then. They’d meet and decide how they’d best
help the suffering,” said Al-Maeena.
This time, as the Kingdom confronts one of
the biggest public-health challenges since its
founding, Aloula has managed to help 4,000
people and more than 1,000 families in need.
“Women are by nature caregivers, so this
period of upheaval and distress has prompted
women in Saudi Arabia to come together more
than ever to help those suffering,” said Honayda
Serafi, a fashion designer who serves on the
board of the Saudi ADHD Society.
Serafi said she is providing meals for 100 fam-
ilies in Lebanon during the coronavirus crisis.
“We want to give a sense of hope and positivity
during this period to everyone in need,” she
told Arab News.
The Saudi ADHD Society, chaired by Princess
Nouf bint Mohammed bin Abdullah Al-Saud,
has tailored its ADHD (attention deficit hyper-
activity disorder) programs for online platforms
in light of the current situation.
“We’ve provided close to 100 free online coun-
seling sessions,” said Serafi, adding that the
society has been receiving many calls for help.
Alturki said all three activities in which
Alnahda specializes — grassroots assistance,
research and fieldwork, and advocacy — are key
to understanding how the situation is affecting
women.
In addition, the organization has overseen
the distribution of more than 600 laptops among
children in need, and connected women in need
of masks, sanitizers and financial assistance
with charities.
In Alkhobar, Saudi Arabia, social services
of a similar nature are being provided by Fatat
Alkhaleej, a charity founded in 1968.
“We’ve sourced and distributed protective
baskets among beneficiaries of our programs,”
said Ebtisam Abdullah Al-Jubair, CEO of Fatat
Alkhaleej. “We’re also transferring SR200
($53.19) to 173 families as part our orphan-spon-
sorship program.”
She said Fatat Alkhaleej is handing out food
baskets to 1,000 families daily and providing
online services.
