Ialso want to compare the specific video’s click-through rate to the average click-
through rate for the channel as a whole. To find that number, go to your YouTube
studio -> Click on Analytics -> Click on the Reach tab.

My channel as a whole has a click-through rate of 3.1% in the last 28 days. That means
that the Millionaire Roth IRA video is below average, and again indicates to me that I
need to improve the title and thumbnail. The channel as a whole has also seen a 27%
drop in the click-through rate, meaning that I may need to reassess all of the videos to
see where I could improve the title and thumbnail.

The second way to optimize your videos is by analyzing audience retention. Once
you’ve won the click (someone has clicked on your video), now your goal is to keep
them watching the video for the longest amount of time.

To find this information, go to your YouTube studio -> Content -> Find the individual
video -> Click on Analytics -> Click on the Engagement tab. You’ll then see audience
retention.

In this particular video I can see that there’s a steep drop in the first 30 seconds of the
,

video, as well as the last few seconds of the video. In the first 30 seconds, 36% of people
are deciding that they aren’t convinced enough to continue to watch the video. That
means I didn’t “hook” them well enough. That’ll be an area for improvement.

Another thing I’ll want to improve is the steep dropoff at the end. The key to a good
ending for a video is to not indicate that the video is ending. In this video, I used trigger
words like “don’t forget to subscribe” that tips viewers off to the fact that the video is
ending. That’s why you see a steep drop.

In this video the retention chart looks much different. There’s actually an increase in
,

views about halfway through the video. The video is about how much YouTube paid
me for 1 million views, and clearly people have skipped to the part of the video where I
show the numbers of the screen, then they don’t stick around for the rest of the video.
So what can I learn from this about optimizing these types of videos in the future? One
technique is to not show the numbers of the screen like I did, so that they can’t fast
forward through the video to try to find this spot. Another would be to just show the
number at the very beginning, where there’s always going to be a dropoff. Then, the
people who are only watching the video to know the number can leave, but the people
who want to watch the video to hear my insight (and weren’t just clicking to know the
number) can stick around.

This is the kind of analysis that you’ll want to do on each video that you publish, so that
you can continue to optimize your videos, and therefore increase your views and
subscribers!
