Outside World’s effect on education: Colombia was doing just fine until corona virus hit. Elementary and
secondary schools were forced to switch to an online learning system. They had to learn through either radio or
broadcast compared to our zoom calls and online lessons. However, economic success also took a hit which
in turn made schools suffer. The prices of crude oil failing caused the economic growth of Colombia to take a
massive hit. It could also reverse their recent economic progress.
Importer or exporter of education: Colombia seems to be a heavy exporter of education. Around 2007
Colombia exported 21,808 students. However, between then and 2017 it doubled to 44,423 students. All these
Colombian students left to enroll in other schools. When it double Colombia became the second-largest
sending country of international students. Well for Latin America that is, the first being Brazil.
One Issue against their education: One of the issues being their economic success. If that fails then the school
funding will surely dwindle.
One thing I would change: I would change the programs slightly. I would add more programs unique to them
specifically. I would add things that appeal to all sorts of students to convince people to come. I would include
things like video game design, fashion design, architecture. That way there would be a bit more variety across
schools. It would also offer a more interesting time for the students in them.
One thing the U.S should adapt: The U.S should take up its focus on schooling. While schooling there isn’t the
best, it seems to be doing better than the U.S. I like that they have a vast number of schools and different types.
While they don’t have many programs there is still a decent amount of them. The U.S has good funding but a lot
of lackluster programs in schools. Colombia is surpassing them in that matter.
Part 2: Interview
A: It forced most of me and my friends to learn through other means such as radio and broadcasts. We were
also forbidden from exiting our homes for a while. I had quite a hard time dealing with it.
A: I am in my final year of secondary school. I am going to be graduating from tenth later this year. Then I will
start preparing for the next. Then soon afterwards I will have to go to college.
Q: Are your classes more test heavy or do they focus on student choice?
A: It is a mix of both. There is tests and exams we have to pass to reach the next grade. However, there are
also other programs to choose from.
Q: If there was one thing you would change about your schooling what would you choose and why?
A: I would choose to add more programs and have more things to do. It would be a lot more fun to have new
programs to explore. Then we could learn more than the base education.
A: They are set up in rows and columns of chairs with desks. There is also a board in the front of the room. The
amount of student’s vary from 20-40 usually.
