1. Discriminate the similarities and differences of
the given topic.
2. Write a composition showing comparison and
contrast.

BEWARE OF

We often heard that alligators and crocodiles are dangerous.

Did you ever wonder how are they alike and different from each
other?

Alligators and crocodiles have some characteristics that are

alike. They are both large and scary-looking reptiles. They have
sharp teeth and scaly skin, too. They also bury their eggs in sand or
mud and are even known to attack humans
BEWARE OF

However, the two are also different in some ways. One

difference is their habitat. Alligators prefer to live in freshwater
while crocodiles prefer in salty water. Another one is their snout.
Crocodiles have long and narrow snout than the alligators. Unlike
alligators too, the crocodiles are more aggressive and move fast.

Indeed, these two reptiles look and behave in similar and

different ways. This must be something to be aware of.
QUESTIONS:

● What is the composition all about?

● In the 1st paragraph, what were the two things being
introduced? Does it state the main idea of the composition?
● What were discussed in the 2nd paragraph? Do you notice
some transitions/signal words? What are they?
● How about in the 3rd paragraph, what were discussed? Can
you cite the signal words or transitions present?
● In the 4th paragraph, how was the composition ended? Does
it restate the introduction?
COMPARISON AND CONTRAST

COMPARISON CONTRAST

concepts or ideas concepts or ideas
COMPARISON AND CONTRAST COMPOSITION

It is a composition that tells the comparison

(similarities) and contrast (differences) of two
or more (persons, animals, places, things)
respectively.
HOW TO WRITE
IT?
THE FOLLOWING TIPS SHOULD BE
REMEMBERED
a. Choose the people or things
(subjects) you want to describe

b. Organize similarities and differences

of your two subjects in a Venn diagram

c. Use the transition/signal words that

show- - similarities, such as like,
similarly, and both - differences, such
as but, however, while, and on the other
hand
WHAT OUTLINE SHOULD BE FOLLOWED
EXAMPLE

Dogs and cats are alike in several ways. Both dogs and cats have
similar purposes in a household. They provide friendship to their
owners, and often come to be like a part of a person’s family.
Dogs and cats also both have similar sleeping patterns. Dogs
and cats can both be found napping throughout the day, but also still
find themselves to be sleepy at night. A third way in which dogs and
cats are similar is in the way they look. Both animals are relatively
small, with four legs and a tail. Although these similarities exist, there
are many ways in which dogs and cats are different.
EXAMPLE

One difference between the two is their ability to be trained.

Dogs tend to be trained to do tricks much quicker and with more ease
than cats. Another difference is that dogs typically like to be pet and
cuddled, and cats are a more independent animal. Typically, cats do
not like to be cuddled, and prefer to be left alone. Dogs, however,
cuddle easily and frequently.
Finally, a major difference between dogs and cats is the sounds
that each produces. A dog will growl, bark, whimper, and woof, while
a cat meows, purrs, and hisses.
Though there are many similarities, the differences between
dogs and cats make each a unique animal.
ACTIVITY 1
Below are set of paragraphs written in the boxes. Arrange
the boxes in order to come up with a good composition
showing comparison and contrast.
WRITE YOUR OWN COMPOSITION
Write a 4-paragraph composition showing comparison and contrast based
on the given topic.

1. Virtual vs. Real Classrooms

parents. What do they do that is
similar? How are they different?

Write an essay comparing and

contrasting your two favorite
television, book, or movie
