I. LEARNING OBJECTIVES
At the end of lesson, the student should be able to:
a. define Absolute Value.
b. perform operations using absolute value.
c. find the absolute value of a number.
d. represent the absolute value of a number on the number line as the distance of a
number from zero.

a. Topic: Absolute Value
b. Content Standard:
The learner demonstrates understanding of key concepts of sets and the real
number system.
c. Performance Standard:
The learner is able to formulate challenging situations involving sets and real
numbers and solve these in a variety of strategies.

Represents the absolute value of a number on a number line as the distance of a
number from 0.

(The class will be divided into half, and will be given 5 minutes through google breakrooms to
answer the activity that are flash in their screens or are required to take screenshots to have
reference)
Directions: Study the picture carefully, then answer the questions that follows.
Daemon and Rhaenyra both came from school. From there, Rhaenyra walked in the right
direction while Daemon walked in the left direction.

1. Starting at 0, how many steps did Rhaenyra take to where she stands? Also, how many
steps did Daemon take to where he is now in the picture?
2. What can you say about the direction that Rhaenyra and Daemon are heading?
a. The same
b. Opposite
c. Parallel
d. Intersecting
3. Who walked the farther distance from their school- Rhaenyra or Daemon?

c. Abstraction
Opposite - additive inverse
Number Line – is best described as a straight line which is extended in both directions as
illustrated by arrowheads. A number line consists of three elements:

a. set of positive numbers and is located to the right of zero.


b. set of negative numbers, and is located to the left of zero; and
c. zero.

Absolute Value – of a number can be defined as the distance from zero on the number line. The
symbol for the absolute value of a number ‘x’ is |x|.

1. |12| = 12; is read as “the absolute value of (positive) twelve is twelve”.


2. |-12| = 12; is read as “is read as “the absolute value of (negative) twelve is twelve”.
3. -|12| = -12; is read as “the negative absolute value of twelve is (negative) twelve”.
Example:

What is the distance of 4 from zero?


What is the distance of -4 from zero?

Another Example:
Simplifying each of the following absolute value expression.

a) | 7 – 2 | b) | 5 – 10 |
Solutions:
a. Since 7-2 = 5 and 5> 0, we have 7 – 2 = |5| = 5.
b. Since 5 – 10 = -5 and – 5 < 0, we have |5-10| = |-5| = 5.
Equations involving absolute value:
Geometrically the expression x = 3 means that the point with coordinate x is 3 units form 0 on
the number line. Obviously, the number line contains two points that are 3 units from the origin.
One to the right of the origin and the other to the left.
Thus x = 3 has two solutions x = 3 and x = -3.
For any rational number a, the equation |x| = a has

• two solutions x = a and x = -a if a > 0 .


• one solution, x = 0 if a = 0 and
• no solution, if a < 0.
Example:
Solve the following absolute value equations.
a) x = 5 b) x = -70
Solutions:
a) x = 5
If x = 5, then x = 5 or -5
Therefore, the Solution set or S.S= {-5, 5}.
b) x = -70
The absolute value of a number cannot be negative, hence the solution
set is empty set or S.S={ }.

d. Application

Aegon's math teacher asks them to record his steps in going into their home, his relative's house,
and his friend's house for their activity the next day.

(Forward steps = positive; Backward steps = negative)

How many steps to get to:


• School to Aegon's house = ________________
• Aegon's house to relative's house = ________________
(Twist - 3 steps from his house he notices that he forgot something, so he goes back to his
house)
• He's relatives' house to Aegon Friend's house = _____________

e. Generalization
The teacher will ask a representative from the class (at least 3) to summarize the lesson or the
activities that are done. Prizes will be given to students who will answer correctly.

IV. Evaluation

1. Evaluation is done through QUIZZIZ (an online platform for quiz).


2. The link will be sent through the google conferencing chat box.

3. The class will take the quiz simultaneously (it will only take 10 to 15 mins).
4. The students are required to take screenshots and send it to the teachers google mail after
they take the quiz for it to be recorded.
