1. Factorize
(a) x 3 + x 2 y ,

8. The general term of a sequence is 3n − 2022 .
(a) Find the 50th term of the sequence.
(b) If the kth term of the sequence is positive. Find the minimum value of k.

(a) The 50th term of the sequence
= 3(50) − 2022 1A

9. Andy’s monthly expenditure is composed of travelling expenses and food expenses. In January,
the travelling expenses and food expenses are $1000 and $2500 respectively. The travelling
expenses increases by $50 every month. The food expenses increases by 5% every month.
(a) Find the travelling expenses in July.
(b) Find the food expenses in July.
(c) Find the percentage change in Andy’s monthly expenditure in July compared to that in
January.

(a) Travelling expenses in July
= 1000 + 50(6)
= $1300 1A
(b) Food expenses in July
= 2500  (1 + 5%)6 1M ( 1 + 5% )
= $3350 (correct to 3 sig. fig.) 1A
(c) Monthly expenditure in July
= 1300 + 3350
= $4650 1M
Percentage change
4650 − (1000 + 2500)
= 100% 1M

10. In the figure, E is a point on AC such that AC ⊥ DE , ACB = 90 , BC = AE = 5 , EC = 7 and
AD = 13 .
(a) Prove that ABC  DAE .
(b) Prove that DA ⊥ AB .

(a) In ABC and DAE ,
AB2 = BC 2 + CA2 (Pyth. theorem)
AB = 52 + (5 + 7)2
= 13
= DA
BC = AE (given)
BCA = AED = 90 (given)
 ABC  DAE (R.H.S.)

11. In the figure, H is the orthocentre of ABC , HA = HB and BAH = 25 .
(a) Find HAE .
(b) CH is extended to meet AB at F. Prove that CF is a median of ABC .

(a) HBA = HAB = 25 (base s , isos.  )
AHE = HAB + HBA (ext.  of  )
= 50
HEA = 90 ( H is the orthocentre of ABC )
HEA + HAE + AHE = 180 (  sum of  )

HAE = 40
