Educ 322 – Building and Enhancing New Literacies

Literacy is defined by dictionaries as the state of being able to read and write
(Literacy, Literate, n.d.). Although it is the ultimate thesis of this chapter that such a
traditional definition no longer suffices in the information age, a thorough understanding
of literacy and its past nuances will give us a solid foundation in exploring and
discussing the “new” literacies of the 21 st century and why possessing them is now
mandatory for both teachers and students in all levels of education.

1. Given the traditional/ conventional concept of literacy, how literate are you?
Answer: I must say, as broad as my understanding and knowledge, which I
assume is informed by my degree of maturity and life experiences leading to
enhanced awareness and enlightenment, where I comprehend what I've read
and envision and conceptualize the story's flow. Many of the words in the story
are also familiar to me. As deep as my knowledge and understanding, which I

2. How deep is your level of comprehension?

Answer: As broad as my understanding and knowledge, which I assume is
informed by my degree of maturity and life experiences leading to enhanced
awareness and enlightenment, where I comprehend what I've read and envision

3. As a pre-service teacher, what kind of written materials should you be able

to read and understand? Are you reading these materials? How well can
you understand them?
Answer: I use a range of reading and writing tools as a pre-service teacher,
including books and other reading materials, as well as online platforms where I
can choose specific themes. During this pandemic, though, I'm relying more on
online websites because they're simple and convenient to use. Reading materials
from the first few weeks of school is also recommended. Create classroom
standards and expectations. Depending on the grade level you teach, this will be
different. Differentiating your lessons is also a good idea. Look through your
material as an elementary school teacher to gain a sense of the scope and
sequence of each subject for the year. I can only practice with my classmates. It's
easy to watch and have ideas; it's far more difficult when you're ultimately
responsible for so much in such a short period of time. To encourage pupils,
make the most of every chance and remember to consider different learning
styles as well as appealing to their interests.

4. Which of the new literacies are you knowledgeable in? Which of the new
literacies do you lack knowledge in?
Answer: I can claim that when it comes to the new literacy that has emerged in
today's world, I am somewhat educated about the new ways of communicating

with others via various internet platforms. When it comes to the literacy that I
lack, I'd say I have a few things I don't master, but we have some means to study
those literacys, such as using various online platforms and other website tutorials
so that I can be directed and learn.

5. Although reading education in the Philippines aims to develop Functional/

Practical literacy in learners, what level of literacy is being developed when
classroom practices focus more on memorization rather than an
understanding application?
Answer: For me, it's crucial to remember that relying too heavily on memorizing
can prevent us from learning more deeply. The majority of information obtained
just by memorization is frequently lost afterwards. Critical thinking skills are
essential for finding solutions to topics or situations that you have never
experienced before. Memorization alone may not be enough to tackle any
problem that deviates from the memorized content. Many of my classmates who
were good at memorizing were honor students in elementary and high school,
with some even earning valedictorian, which astounds me because they are so
brilliant at memorizing. They chose difficult degrees like chemical engineering or
biology because they thought they were smart because they were honor students
in high school. When they received failing grades for the first time in their lives,
most of them shifted, discouraged by the idea that they weren't really that smart
after all.

Assessment

Directions: Read the questions carefully. Write your answer in a separate sheet of
paper.

1. Compare and contrast the traditional concept of literacy to the modern

view of literacy.
Answer: Literacy is traditionally defined as the ability to understand the
meanings of words in their context. Because of the multitude of possibilities and
their linked and unrelated roles, the current perspective of literacy will be
dynamic.

2. Describe the changes in the 21st century that have led to the rise of new
literacies.
Answer: It is very obvious it has been a lot of changing from the past century
and we are in 21st century the changes, most visible shift is the widespread use

of the internet. Understanding what's out there and discriminating between
factual and fraudulent sources is a vital literacy skill. That, I guess, falls under the
category of critical thinking. Computers, on the other hand, allow individuals to
communicate, search, arrange their discoveries, and so forth. The term
"computer literacy" was formerly popular, but it has fallen out of favor in current
century. The third change, in my opinion, may be visual literacy. As a result of
their frequent viewing, movies and television shows have gotten far more
sophisticated, and many people have become far more discerning and
demanding.
