CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION
This chapter presents the background of the study, the statement of the
problem, the significance of the study and the scope and delimitation of the
study.
Background Of Study
Peer pressure is often seen in adolescents and adolescents as they find solace in their peers and
decide to do what their peers are doing without knowing whether it is good or bad for them.
Adolescence is a personality transition period when a child reaches a transition point from childhood to
adulthood (Adeniyi & Kolawole, 2015). Thus, people are more likely to be seduced by the concept of
social contextualization. For example, interactions with others tend to involve some activity, such as
sleeping in class or drinking during work hours (Bonein & Denont-Boemont, 2013).
The social environment of adolescence can influence adolescence, as adolescents generally tend
to interact more with their peers during this period. As children grow up and enter adolescence,
adolescents become more dependent on their peers than on family, especially when it comes to making
it is correlated with the support of adolescents' parents, teachers, and peers (Chen, 2008). In general,
teenagers spend more time with their peers. Peer pressure is described as having both positive and
negative effects on people, and it does not affect individuals as it is a continuous learning (Gulati, 2017).

Peer pressure often has a different impact on student performance in school. Whether positively
or negatively, it is how their peers influence them. Teenagers need to find in others the solace they find
in the presence of their peers, and they don't even recognize how their peers affect their academics.
When highschool students begin Junior High School they experience pressure from multiple
sources. For example, they experience pressure from their parents to succeed, from their professors,
and pressure from themselves to do well in classes. This pressure could lead to high anxiety and possibly
even poor performance in classes. Prior research that has examined the impact of anxiety. Both argue
that anxiety increases the performance to a point, but then performance decreases again with too much
pressure. Other people can inspire or in other word they also includes motivation. This motivation
increases the drive to succeed and perform at a higher level. In the current study I manipulated the
pressure participants felt as they completed a memory test to examine pressure as an influence on
memory performance. Furthermore, I also analyzed how trait-anxiety interacts with pressure. Junior
highschool students were separated into either a no pressure condition or a pressure condition and
completed a memory test. Results showed a trend for participants with low trait-anxiety to have
increased memory performance in the pressure condition. These results follow the Processing Efficiency
Theory and the Yerkes-Dodson law. In other words, perhaps participants had better memory in the
pressure condition because they were motivated to do well. Future research identifying the optimal
Statement of problems
This study aims to evaluate the students' mental health as a tool in academic pressure.
Specifically , this study will seek answers for the following questions:
What are the effects of being pressured especially in their academic performance?
Significance of Study
Students - this study will provide the students with knowledge and awareness on how
experiencing pressure can have serious effects on their mental health and academic
performance. This study will also try to give information on how they can handle being
pressured.
Parents - the results of this study will help the parents give the proper guidance to give their
children the peace of mind that they need. Not putting them into too much pressure. Also, a
guide to give their children an environment where they cannot be judged and be given a good
experience in education. Parents will also take caution and be aware of their children's mental
health and how mental health is important in the lives of not just their children but also for
themselves.
Teachers – this study will be a guide to teachers on how they can understand the feelings of
their students and how they can handle it. It will greatly benefit the bond between a teacher and
a student. Teachers will take caution on how they treat pressured students and also, it will
Future Researchers – the results of this study will help as a stepping stone for future students
that will try to tackle this kind of topic. Instead of being stressed they will have a guide and
reference on how to deal with this kind of research. Studies like this will be of great help to
develop their thinking minds and have a better understanding on how to do a research on
pressured students.

To sum it up, once the students who are being pressured by any means, they will have a guide
and how they can deal with it. The impact and contribution of this research will not just help the
students but also the teachers and parents as said from the following. They can take it more
The researchers focus their study on the common causes and effects of pressure in
students. The study is conducted at New life evangelical training school Inc, school year
of 2022-2023. The respondents of the study are the study are the current students of
