UNIVERSITY OF JOHANNESBURG DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL ENGINEERING STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING 3B (SUS3B21): TEST 2 INSTRUCTIONS: - 4 1. Answer all questions. 2. Time allowed = | hr 30 mins. QUESTION 1 (a) What are the 2 ultimate limit states considered in the design of tension members? Explain these briefly. (b) A 100 x 75 x 10 angle shown in Figure 1 is required to carry an ultimate load of SOOKN in tension. The member is welded to the gusset through the longer leg using a 6mm weld, If the steel is of Grade 350W, check the adequacy of the section to resist the design loading. What will be the capacity of the section if the transverse weld is excluded from the connection? Comment on the tensile resistances calculated (one with a transverse weld and one without). Gross cross-sectional area of section = 1.66 x 10°mm? G0) 60mm weld 00 x 75 x 10 angle Figure 1.1 QUESTION 2 (a) What is the shear centre? Describe the 2 major components that a lateral unrestrained beam uses to resist, lateral-torsional buckling. (b) Describe briefly how residual stresses are formed in hot rolled sections. How do these stresses affect beams in bending and how does the code account for these stresses in the design of beams? (©) One of the exhibits in a trade show consists of an isolated 203 x 203 x 46 Grade 300W I-column section of length Sm. The column is free at the top and fixed at the bottom. Assuming that the moments carried by the column are very small, and therefore ignored, calculate the maximum axial compressive force that the section can resist. (20)
