QUIZ #2: DIRECT VARIATION

I. Write an equation of direct variation for each situation.

1. The perimeter (P) of an equilateral triangle varies directly as the length of the side (s).

2. The number of test papers (T) a teacher can check in an hour varies directly as the number of
items in the test (I)

3. The perimeter (P) of a square varies directly as the length of the side (s).

4. The circumference of a circle (c) varies directly as its diameter (d).

II. Find the constant of variation and equation of variation in which y varies directly as x , and the
following conditions exist. Then, find the value of y when x=12 .

III. Find the constant of variation and equation of variation in which y varies directly as the square of x ,
and the following conditions exist. Then, find the value of y when x=6 .

V. PROBLEM-SOLVING: Solve the following problems following the steps you have learned.

1. Men’s handkerchiefs are sold at a price ₱7.00 higher than the price of ladies’ handkerchiefs. If
Phoebe paid ₱516.00 for a dozen handkerchiefs, how much will Matt pay if he buys 8
handkerchiefs?

2. The electrical current, in amperes, in a circuit varies directly as the voltage. When 15 volts are
applied, the current is 5 amperes. What is the current when 18 volts are applied?

3. The cost of material used in making a Frisbee varies directly with the square of its diameter. If it
costs the manufacturer $0.45 for the material of a Frisbee with a 9-inch diameter, then what is
the cost for the material for a Frisbee with a 12-inch diameter?

4. The stopping distance of a car after the brakes have been applied varies directly as the square
of the speed. If a car travelling 60 mph can stop in 200 ft., how far will it take a car to stop if its
traveling at 50mph?
