METHODOLOGY

A) SPECIFIC HEAT OF A METAL

10g of copper was weighed and transfered into dry test

tube and also placed into 400ml beaker.

The beaker was filled with water until it was above the
level of the copper sample in the test tube.
The water in beaker was boiled and the temperature
was maintained for 5 minutes. The temperature was
recorded.
The mass of the calorimeter was weighed and 20ml of
water was added into the calorimeter.

The combined mass of calorimeter and water were

determined.

The thermometer was secured and positioned below the

water surface of calorimeter. The temperature was
recorded over 60 second intervals for 5 minutes.

Test tube was removed from boiling water and

transfered the copper into the calorimeter. The content
was stirred carefully.

The temperature was recorded over 30 second intervals

for 3 minutes.

The temperature versus time graph was plotted and the

∆T from the curve was determined.
B) ENTHALPY (HEAT) OF SOLUTION FOR THE DISSOLUTION OF A SALT

The mass of dry calorimeter was weighed. 20ml of

distilled water was added into calorimeter and its initial
temperature was recorded.

The temperature was recorded for 60 seconds with 15

seconds interval. The combined mass of calorimeter and
water were reweighed.

5g of sodium thiosulphate was weighed. The salt was

added to the calorimeter and stirred until its dissolved.

The temperature and time was recorded at 15 seconds

intervals for 3 minutes.

The temperature versus time curve was constructed and

the ∆T was determined from the curve.
