This month, I've started making holiday and 2023-
related POD product designs featuring everything
from Christmas ornaments that resemble disco balls
to lava lamp-style Christmas trees.

Keep your eye on decor and aesthetic trends,

especially as it pertains to the season you're in.
Whether fall, winter, spring or summer, there are
always leading decor trends.

And these leads can convert to sales across any

product to which we have access in POD.

Here's what else is on my radar this week for our

first guide in the month of November.

4
Disturbing Things

"Disturbing" isn't a word that

likely comes to mind when
considering the types of
designs that people search for
in apparel, art, and home
decor.

But you might be surprised.

"Disturbing" content is huge right now on social

media platforms like TikTok.

But "disturbing" isn't really as "disturbing" as you

might think.

"Disturbing" might refer to pizza that has pineapple

for a topping.

5
"Disturbing" might refer to people who leave their
Christmas lights up until after February.

"Disturbing" might refer to people who use gothic

aesthetics for the holidays instead if stereotypical
shades of green and red.

In this sense, "disturbing" can be thought of as non-

conformist, cringey, or silly and worthy of gentle,
humorous mockery.

So make some “disturbing” designs this Q4 and into

2023. You will be introducing your work to an
entirely new audience that searches in an entirely
new way from what you're used to.

6
Niche Mandalas

Mandalas are old news in POD,

right?

You may want to revisit that idea,

so long as you are not simply
making more generic mandala
designs.

Now, if you're not acquainted with mandalas, you

may be wondering what they are.

According to this definition from Adobe:

In the ancient Sanskrit language of Hinduism and

Buddhism, mandala means “circle.” Traditionally, a
mandala is a geometric design or pattern that represents
the cosmos or deities in various heavenly worlds. “It’s all
about finding peace in the symmetry of the design and of
the universe,” says artist Saudamini Madra.
7
One approach to mandala-making that merch
makers always ignore is the application of niche
themes or aesthetics.

I'm talking about patriotic mandalas, gothic

mandalas, psychedelic mandalas, etc.

This is a huge wasted design opportunity that needs

to be remedied. Whether it's something as simple
as red and green mandalas for Christmas, or icy
blue fractal mandalas for winter, there are all sorts
of evergreen and seasonal aesthetics you can apply
to mandalas.

And you should do exactly that!

8
Scrolling Humor

It's something hundreds of

millions of people do more
than they realize.

They scroll.

On social media, they scroll

up. They scroll down. They are always scrolling.

Amazon, Etsy, and other ecommerce platforms

would be well served by designs that take into
consideration our collective obsession with and
distraction from scrolling.

Consider such approaches as:

• Scrolling puns
• Escaping from life by scrolling

9
• Always scrolling through pictures
• Always scrolling dog, cat, or funny animal
memes
• Being "picky" and scrolling past many options
on dating sites
• Thumb / hand injuries from scrolling too much
• Scrolling instead of sleeping

The list goes on and on. Link scrolling to everything

from work to interests and you'll likely strike a
nerve with a target audience somewhere.

POD Graphics: Niche Candy Canes

As you've likely noticed by

now, I'm a big believer in
taking customary niche
graphics and giving them an
aesthetics makeover.

I love shaking up familiar

icons, clip art, and symbols, especially of a seasonal
variety.

When it comes to Christmas, few visuals are more

familiar than candy canes this time of year.

But we need to stop thinking exclusively about red

and white striped candy canes.

What we need are niche aesthetic candy canes

spanning a broad range of visuals.

Luckily for you, that's exactly what Adam Guballa at
Tshirtfella has created for you this week.

So as you plow ahead with a new batch of holiday

designs for the next six weeks, be sure to shake
things up and create holiday designs that look
nothing like what you've created in previous years,

Monday Mindset

Are you an excessively

cheerful holiday fan?

If so, it's important to

remember that for every
over-the-top Christmas
fanatic, there's someone
else who absolutely despises the showing of
excessively abundant holiday cheer.

If you are yet to make designs either for people who

love or hate "annoyingly excessive holiday cheer,"
this is your opportunity to do exactly that.

Nothing makes people laugh or cringe quite like

tshirts and products that either celebrate or poke

fun at one's exuberance for the holidays this time of
year.

Give it a shot and see if this approach can generate

some sales for you in the home stretch of the
holiday shopping season.

Until next Monday, have a great week and please

reach out any time if you have questions or need
help.
