Lesson
After graduating in senior high school or college, the next crucial thing one will do is to look for a job. Along with
this challenging task is to comply with the basic yet important requirements every company will ask like résumé and
application letter.
Application letter, also known as, cover letter, could be the most important aspect of your job search. It goes with
your resume, but not a duplicate of it.

What is a cover letter?

A cover letter is a written document commonly submitted with a job application outlining the applicant's
credentials and interest in the open position. (Kagan, 2020)
A letter of application, also known as cover letter, is a document sent with your resume to provide additional
information on your skills and experience. It provides detailed information on why you are qualified for the job you
are applying for. (Custodio, et. al 2013)
The purpose of the application letter is for the prospect employer to read your resume, just as the purpose of the
resume is for you to be called for an interview.

Content of a Cover letter

The opening paragraph expresses your interest on the position, tells how you learn about the opening of the position,
and indicates the reason in applying for the position.
Example:
Your advertisement in section C5 of the Philippine Daily Inquirer for a computer technician interests me
very much. I believe that my ICT skills will qualify me for the position. I am interested in the Sales
Representative position you advertised at Manila Bulletin last July 5, 2020. Considering the qualifications
indicated in my résumé, I am confident that I best suited for the position since I am a Marketing Management
graduate.
The middle paragraph indicates your skills and experiences that made you qualify for the position. Mention

qualifications and services you can offer to the company. Provide some details of information mentioned in your
resume, especially those that are related to the job you are applying. It is also important to mention some details about
the company incorporating its mission and vision, and products and services; it shows that you made research before
applying.

Example:
Your Ad stated that your company is looking for someone with experience in general office skills. I have been
involved in this line of work for many years through volunteers and paid positions that honed my skills in
typing, budgeting, filing, answering phone calls and correspondence, greeting customers, and running
standard office equipment. In addition, I am proficient in Microsoft office suite and am completely
comfortable with new technologies. I am a Mass Communication graduate major in broadcasting from the
University of the Philippines, Diliman. My two years of experience in call centers make me confident in
applying for the vacant position in your company. I have handled both the in-bound and the out-bound
transactions and am very comfortable with the graveyard shift. (Custodio E.S. et al 2013)

The final paragraph closes your letter and summarizes your interest that suggest the prospect employer to call you
for an interview. It should sound optimistic and appreciative. Be sure to give your correct contact number or email
address for him/her to reach you.
Example:
Thank you for considering my application. I would appreciate the opportunity to discuss with you further the
support I can contribute to the company through an interview. You can contact me through my number 0922
143 4455 or my email address jhonnadcruz@yahoo.com. I am happy to have the opportunity to share more
of my qualifications and experiences in an interview in your convenient time. You can reach me
through the number 0922 143 4455 or email address jhonnadcruz@gmail.com. I look forward to hearing
back from you and discussing my application in more details in a time convenient to you. Pease refer to this
number 0922 143 4455 and email address jhonna.dcruz@yahoo.com.

Points to remember in writing a cover letter:


 Submit only original cover letter along with original resume.
 Use acceptable font style congruent with your resume.
 Emphasize your name; email address must be professional-looking.
 Avoid overusing the pronoun ‘I’ for it may appear self-centered.
 Proofread your letter before submitting.
