According to the textbook, “a system of linear equations consists of two or more linear
equations made up of two or more variables such that all equations in the system are
considered simultaneously. To find the unique solution to a system of linear equations,
we must find a numerical value for each variable in the system that will satisfy all
equations in the system at the same time. Some linear systems may not have a solution
and others may have an infinite number of solutions. In order for a linear system to have
a unique solution, there must be at least as many equations as there are variables.”
(Abramson, 2017)
What concepts (only the names) did you need to accommodate the concept of
linear and non-linear systems in your mind?
Linear
Super
Position System
System of equations
Coordinate
Continuous
Conic section
Variable elimination
Tangents
Parabolas
Lines
Circles
Points of intersection
What are the simplest linear system and non-linear system you can imagine?
The 2 lines y=x and y=-x. is the simplest linear system I can think of.
Parabolas y=x^2 and y=-x^2 is the simplest non-linear system that I can imagine.
In your day to day, is there any occurring fact that can be interpreted as linear
systems and non-linear systems?
During this holiday season everyone is looking for the best deals best prices and the
linear system comes in very handy to compare prices. Very helpful system I must say.
It is fascinating to watch satellite images of outer space and so on and the satellites
orbit the earth and can be studied using non linear equations. It’s really amazing how
mathematics is involved in almost every activity.
Another example is GPS which uses satellite to map out different locations.
What strategy are you using to get the graph of linear systems and non-linear
systems?
To graph linear systems I used desmos online calculator and Geobebra 3d calculator for
graphing 3d.
