HEREDITY
GENETICS
Prepared by: Sir Gino
Objectives:
• Describe the concept of
genetics
• Differentiate the three
branches of genetics
• Value the importance of
genetics
What is Genetics?
• Genetics is the scientific study
of genes and heredity—of how certain
qualities or traits are passed from parents
to offspring as a result of changes
in DNA sequence.
Key words

Heredity
Inheritance
Variation
Heredity
refers to the passing of
characteristics from
parents to offspring.
Inheritance
the process by which
genetic information is
passed on from parent to
child.
Variation
refers to the differences
among individuals
belonging to the same
species.
Who is the
proponent of this
concept?
Gregor Johann Mendel
(1822–1884)

• Known as the “Father of Genetics”.

• He proposed the key laws of

genetics from this work on
inheritance of traits in peas in
1866.
Gregor Johann Mendel

Three
Branches
of
Genetics
Mendelian Genetics
reviews the basic laws of
inheritance that were
described by Gregor
Mendel.
Molecular Genetics
deals with the chemical
nature of the gene, the
mechanisms of
transmission, and its varied
application.
Population Genetics
focuses on the behavior of
a particular gene in a group
of organisms and how gene
frequency is affected by
environmental factors.
